新潟県上越市に位置する犀潟駅はJR信越本線と北越急行ほくほく線の接続駅で、新潟県最古の木造駅舎を有する駅です。当駅を終点（ただし大半の列車は直江津方面へ直通）とする北越急行ほくほく線は、六日町と犀潟の59.5 kmを結ぶ第三セクター鉄道です。山岳地帯をトンネルで貫く高規格路線であり、2002年3月からは日本の在来線では最速の160km/h運転が特急「はくたか」において始められました。2015年3月14日に予定される北陸新幹線の金沢間延伸開業に伴い、特急「はくたか」は廃止されるため、その風景が見られる期間もあとわずかとなりました。今回は、犀潟駅を通過・発着するJR信越本線の列車を撮影しました。「はくたか」と同時に廃止される豪華寝台特急「トワイライトエクスプレス」の通過シーンも盛り込むことができました。
Saigata station, located at Joetsu City in Niigata Prefecture, Japan, is a transfer station between JR Shin-etsu line and Hokuetsu Express Hokuhoku line. Hokuetsu Express Hokuhoku line, connecting Muikamachi and Saigata in 59.5km, is a high-standard railway line. Limited express HAKUTAKA runs at a maximum speed of 160km/h, which is the fastest of all local Japanese trains. But this operation service will abolished on 14th March, 2015, because the Hokuriku Shinkansen extends to Kanazawa. I took JR Shin-etsu line's trains passing through, arriving at and departing from Saigata station. This movie includes passage scene of luxury sleeper limited express train TWILIGHT EXPRESS.

A place where you can see so many former JNR trains is a good place! Good God, the refurbished 485 trains are so gorgeous, i love them! Fantastic snowy landscape which is easily enjoyed thanks to the zoomless shots! The freight train and ''Twilight Express'' under this glorious night dimmed scenery were real treats!

The number of 115 and 485 series trains surely has been reduced especially in JR EAST. So here is a precious area to see both of them but sleeper train TWILIGHT EXPRESS, limited express train HOKUETSU, and rapid train KUBIKINO will disappear in a month sadly. Weather forecast said Niigata area might suffer from severe snowstorm on this day, but what I really suffer from is water drops on my camera lens blown by strong wind.

omiyaexpress Unfortunately, we are going to miss these trains...i see, i faced the same problem during the snowy days. Any camera can take some drops but be careful not to let drops stay on the lens and battery covers for too long. The effect they cause to the lens is not bad to me, it gives a natural and realistic touch to the video, in my opinion.
