Omkara is Othelo, but it is a North Indian hinterland gangster movie first. In that portrayal it is flawless. My best friend is a Rajput from Balia in UP. We saw it together back then, and after the movie, he was like, dude, I felt like I was back home.

Disagree on several counts: 1. Othello is a moor. That does not mean black. He’d likely be like someone from Algeria i.e. North African or someone from South of Spain. Othello’s identity as a black person is an American invention 2. Caste is inherently interlinked with racism 3. The tragedy even for a Shakespeare purist is extremely evident in Omkara. I don’t see how you don’t get the same feeling (of tragedy) as that you would in a Romeo and Juliet story. It is perhaps in some ways even more tragic as it stems from jealousy and weakness from lack of self-worth. One is not supposed to empathise with a murderer. Even in the Merchant of Venice, where modern interpretations have humanised Shylock, the lack of mercy makes him a villain (I am sure you must have read/watched Portia’s beautiful speech). Perhaps you are unacquainted with the tragedies that can be seen everyday in contemporary India also regarding inter-caste marriages and honour killings This story for a person who knows Indian culture, whether or not s/he knows Shakespeare is probably the strongest and most resonant of the three. Haider is a close 2nd as it too deals with contemporary issues. Maqbool does not have the resonance of either, and lacks the Masala of Macbeth Perhaps you didn’t get it the way most of us do as the subtitles didn’t do justice? Edit: for anyone who wants a good critical overview of the themes and issues in Othello: slate.com/culture/2015/11/why-is-othello-black-understanding-why-shakespeare-made-his-hero-a-moor.html

Well put. I guess they can't connect emotionally to the nuances of a typical rural setting. Unless it has Shahid or Ranveer. So I guess Sonchiriya,Rajneeti are out. But something more contemporary like Kapoor and Sons or Badlapur is more relatable to them.
@AriaIsara5 жыл бұрын
@@saatsamunder15 Only Rick didn't connect that well with it. And it's because he judged it, as he said himself, in terms of the purity of the adaptation.
@r2.b25 жыл бұрын
Aria Isara: but that’s my point, Rick doesn’t know Othello well enough to comment on the purity of the adaptation. Omkara in many ways is a closer adaptation than Haider. The major theme in Othello is jealousy. Racism and bias are tools that used to exploit it, firstly to achieve ones ends (Iago), secondly to extract vengeance/assert himself (Othello). Othello was never meant to be a tragic love story in the mould of Romeo and Juliet. It never had that youthful idealism, tinged with lust, of teenagers. Othello was political. It explored the impact of racism on self-worth and political jealousy. The beauty of Shakespeare lies in the fact that it can be interpreted in myriad ways.
@AriaIsara5 жыл бұрын
@@r2.b2 I was replying to the other person who said Rick didn't like it because it's rural and they prefer more urban stuff. I agree that Omkara was more faithful than Haider.
@r2.b25 жыл бұрын
@Aria Isara, I was just referring to the purity of the adaptation bit. Agree with you on the lack of connect, but wanted to point out that the lack of connect was less to do with judging it on the purity of adaptation and more to do with his ignorance of Indian Cultural nuances (which is quite understandable-I would miss quite a few US cultural nuances)...

A lot of people in India rate the trilogy as (1 being best) : 1. Maqbool 2. Omkara 3. Haider As far as Omkara is concerned a lot of cultural nuances would be lost in translation, as it is the most rustic of all the 3 movies. And when we watched any of these movies, I think more of us Indians were more bowled over by the direction, acting than comparing to tje original works.

With all due respect, dear Rick, more than from a purist's standpoint, I think this movie appeals less to your artistic senses as compared to Maqbool and Haider because of its non familiarity (you both don't know as much about the play Othello as Macbeth or Hamlet). Konkona Sen's character is Emilia, Iago's wife. If u know Othello's character, you would know that though he loves Desdemona so much, he has a very large inferiority complex propelled and heightened by the comments of folks around him especially when he married Desdemona who is seen as a prize catch. Which is why when Iago tries to manipulate him, he falls prey to his wily queries about the way Desdemona behaved with Cassio (Vivek Oberoi) and never questions even once about all the suspicious evidence piled up against both of them (eg. Handkerchief n the way she smiles and talks with Cassio) Othello is a strong 'Black Moor' (racism and pride both in one statement) but his character flaw was not just jealousy, it was also a huge inferiority complex, total belief in Iago and none in Desdemona, which makes him almost a detached person while killing his wife, although he is drenched in sorrow two seconds later. He feels totally justified in killing her because he believes he has been truly wronged. He is an absolutely weak character because he doesn't bother to have his doubts cleared by either his friend or wife, yet is stupid enough to believe Iago, which shows how much Iago ingratiated his way into Othello's heart. Yes they toned down Iago 's character because in the original he killed his wife(Vishal Bharadwaj changed it probably because it was repetitive)but in Saif Ali' s Iago, one understood that he too felt hurt and humiliation at being passed over and recognition being given to someone less worthy (according to him). The dancer is the beautiful Bipasha Basu, she is not a seasoned dancer in this movie but someone just brought in to amuse the gang members n Cassio's love interest. 😊😍Please explore films a little more - as in indepth analysis with the characters and plot loops n twists of a movie because your reviews recently are very much on the surface. You both are great talkers so we realize that fact only after the review😂😀😍🙏🌹

@Richa Verma Thank you so much dear Richa ji🙏❤️😊🌹Very generous of you. Yes the Indian perspective makes them human as you rightly pointed out in that particular scene. He is not one dimensional. Probably Shakespeare 🙏🌹didn't want any character to have just one fatal flaw but adjusted his plots in order to accommodate the wishes of the Court (here the Oueen n her trusted group of royal advisors interested in the art form) But even when you read Shakespeare you do get a sense of a character being a lot more than what's on the surface for the world to see. N let's be real - this is what the director n the makers of the movie Omkara thought of 'Othello'. The character Othello fought so hard for his love but refused to use his wits or brawn when it came to defending his innocent wife. If he didn't believe her, he should have let her explain n if that didn't satisfy him, just plain let her go live her life n he, his own. Sorry I digressed a bit 😅Thank you all for having the instinctive desire to know more about something than what is presented to you🙏❤️This knowledge is pretty basic(n pitifully tiny) compared to what most folks of today know but cant really fault both of them because the language n situations (though gangsta in nature) is not something they are familiar with and most of the time they do get it right😊

Yes. Absolutely. Also, they are more inclined to exact adaptation of Shakespeare. Whereas, we always would want to have a more contemporary and creative take to enjoy the changes and surprises more which matches with the current social-geographical-regional context. E.g. if you watch any adaptation of Shakespeare in Hollywood you will find it boring as there is no change. Just a modern day copy. Like, if you watch Othello with Laurence Fishburne in it you will dislike it as it has not creativity in it at all

The Korbin in the background is exactly like the real Korbin. But Rick looks like the generic white boy 😛 Also, this was the role that showed people that Saif could act. @Z L Bro, I think you have not understood the actual message of that movie. SPOILER ALERT: In that movie, Paresh Rawal was initially an atheist(non believer), but in the end he becomes a true believer of Shri Krishna Bhagwan. In fact this movie actually shows the real meaning of Sanatan Dharma, that Bhagwan (God) always wants us to do our Karma according to our Dharma. Karmanye vadhikaraste ma phaleshu kadachana, is Shlok from Bhagvad Gita. Also the movie climax is directly based on Bhagvad Gita, wherein Kurukshetra, Arjun is confused of fighting the Kauravas, as they consisted of his own family members like cousins, grand father and his gurus. So Krishna tells him that his side is the good one and he has to fight against bad, even if his family is on the wrong side. Similarly in the movie, Paresh Rawal is like Arjun, and he is confused, when he sees his own statue in the temple. So Akshay tells him that it is wrong and he should fight against it. As you can see, this movie is not at all Hinduphobic. This movie does not oppose any religion, it opposes people in all religions, who use the name of God to earn money falsely and cheat innocent people. I wanted them to see this movie, because it has a good concept based on Bhagvad Gita, with good acting by Paresh Rawal, Akshay Kumar and Mithun Da, and also good humour. Plus I also think this movie shows the concept better than PK. Anyways thanks and peace✌️

What most Indians love about this film is that how VB took Shakespeare & made it completely relatable & contemporary just like he did with Haider. Fact is you dont know about Indian heartland culture yet, India is so diverse & what you mostly react to are urban stories. .... Ajay Devgan, Vivek Oberoi & OMG how could you miss Deepak Dobriyal? @alicianaidoo89405 жыл бұрын
I don't think so. I'm south Indian and I think Omkara is one of Vishal Bharadwaj's finest works. The thing is one needs to watch movies with no expectations, preconceptions or bias. Enjoy the movie for what the director intended it to be and the movie goer will then appreciate the regional nuances, and even more importantly learn and get a glimpse of that regional/culture/social-cosm. Just a little FYI guys, the Indian education curriculum still follows a lot of what the British had set up. The education covers pretty much everything and literature is huge. Asians aren’t called smart for no reason. They have to memorize a lot. They are taught everything to the last detail. If you had to attend an Indian school, you would never pass through third grade. So don’t underestimate or think Indian people don’t know Shakespeare or Hemingway or Poe or whoever.
