Great video. We just changed from an Eglu classic (which we got 8 years ago secondhand) so can confirm they are SUPER hardy over time. We are going to be able to sell on our classic too as it’s sill in great nick.

Absolutely! Totally agree. This one now 3 years in and still going strong. The chickens not so much though...3 years is a long time for chickens apparently. The farm where I bought our chickens from told me that the life expectancy of may Gingernut Rangers (the 2 ginger coloured chickens you see in my videos) is only 3 years and their expected egg-laying life is only 18 months! Our have laid regularly for almost 3 years although I did notice a slowdown last year (about 2 and a bit years old) and now this winter they've all stopped. They're all 3 yrs old in March.

@bournebright yeah have done a fair few rotations of birds now. We tend to rescue hybrids so they only last 3 years after such a hard start

I bought one of their first when they started. They originally included the hybrid hens back then too. In fact one of the owners of the company delivered it personally as their family lived nearby. I’ve just replaced that one with a new go up 😊

What a great story. I never knew they sold them with the hens! That means you must have had it for a good few years then? So why did you upgrade? Had the old one rotted or anything?
@Kar41run

@@bournebright I only had to replace the rain/sun cover, the pole for shutting the door (it got bent) and a few of the connectors over the years. It’s still fine but I gifted it to someone as fancied one with a coop off the ground. The hens they offered back then were hybrids called miss pepper pot (black) and ginger ranger (ginger/tan). The old process involved selecting the coop and the hens but o think only available in certain parts of the UK. When the guy delivered it he even put it up for us. Amazing

I've got the big Eglu with the automatic door-opener. I absolutely love it! I've had it about six months. It's attached to the big Omlet walk-in run. Happy and safe hens.

How do you like the large walk in run? Did it have the split door, if so, do you use it much?
@greyhoundmama2062
@greyhoundmama2062 Жыл бұрын
@@reverendandy3279 I love the whole set up. I have attached the Eglu and its three foot run to the biggest walk -in run they sell. The double door is at the other end. I use the door to go into the walk in portion of the run everyday to clean the run and change the water or refill the feeder. I use sand, so it's like a huge kitty box. I scoop the clumps of poo with a little rake and put the goo in my composter. So my chickens do not smell up the yard at all. I have aggressive dogs, so I built my own porch for the door using some extra kenneling panels I already had. Otherwise, I would have bought the Eglu porch attachment for the double door. I don't think there's a better system for keeping backyard chickens, up to 6 large hens or up to 8 of the smaller breeds per Eglu is my suggestion.

@@greyhoundmama2062 Hello, as you got it with the automatic dor and the walk-in part; did you put the automatic door on the main cube ? or at the walk in entrance ? If you put it onto the main cube (which would make sense) do you close the walk-in every night or do you leave it open 24/7? Thanks for you feedback as we're looking for it as well but we don't know if there's any added value to the walk-in part (since if we have to close if manually every night, it limits the added value of the automatic door - except for chicken security which is already a good point).

I just purchased an Omlet set-up. I live on the west coast of the United States. Putting it together now and it is a challenge for me that I'd rather be over by now.

@@bournebright Hi. Somehow I missed your answer from a year ago. THANK YOU very much for responding. I got it together, after some frustration. The people on the help phone were VERY helpful, and nice. I was putting it together by myself. In the end I hired someone to help me put the "roof" up (to hard with one person).

Great video. I'm considering chickens, how often do you have to clean the run area (outside of the box) or do the chicken poop mainly in the box overnight?
@bournebright
@bournebright 8 ай бұрын
I never clean the run area because my chickens have free range of the garden and they generally poop everywhere which balances it out 😁 I do clean the coop every week though

@@bournebright We bought the cube model and we’re very glad we did easy to clean up and we have the extended run cube The chickens have lots of room and it’s easy to move around we have the wheels and we have the handles to help move around however I have not installed the handles yet I just been picking it up in the front and moving it around we’re very pleased with our two chickens in our cube it works out very nicely I would highly recommend omelette egg Lu to anyone however there is a downside it is somewhat expensive and our omelette egg lu cube model with extended run and handles was delivered by FedEx in seven boxes and it does take a long time to assemble and it is somewhat tedious not hard but tedious to assemble all this being said it is a very good chicken coop we have a bunch of wild cats running around come on our property from time to time and our egg lu cube protects those chickens very well

Chickens are less stressed in groups of at least four birds. One is always on guard duty, so this makes them more secure.

@@elijahfluw4347 The Eglu Cube will easily house 4-6 large hens, or 6-8 Bantam size. These coops are for backyard chickens, not for farms or homesteading.

Hi Seb! Thanks for your video! I was wondering if this nice little home can have an automatic door installed? Here in Denmark it gets really bright in the mornings in summertime and I know I wont be able to let them out at 4 or 5 in the morning... AND sometimes I won't be at home and will have to ask neighbours for help. And they wont be there before 9.
@bournebright
@bournebright 8 ай бұрын
Yes it can! There are automated doors available from omlet for all of their coops. I know what you mean...chickens are great, but they do require early morning starts. You can see the omlet auto doors here: bournebright.com/chickens/automatic-door Good luck!

Do you think the coop itself is very small for them & $1,200? I'm looking at 4 to 6 chickens...
@bournebright
@bournebright Жыл бұрын
Congrats on getting some chickens. I wouldn't keep 6 chickens in this. 4 max. $1200 is fair value I think; if you factor in the time you'd spend cleaning some other designs. Wheels on this make it possible to run as a chicken tractor in your garden too if you have a lawn you don't want to destroy.

How conducive is this to do the Deep Litter Method with?
@bournebright
@bournebright Жыл бұрын
Hi David, Not very in it's literal interpretation! The droppings tray is quite shallow so you need to empty it weekly. You could, however, tip the droppings out onto the floor of the coop and let it go from there. I actually made another video about making chicken manure fertiliser here where I share how I did it (entirely by accident - but it worked a treat!) Make Chicken Manure Fertiliser: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gXKVhZiqfKdmjpI Hope that helps.

It hasn't for us yet. I bring the feeder in every night when the chickens go in the coop though and take it out again next morning.
