It's been one year since I pretty much randomly bought this 1997 Toyota Paseo. Here are my thoughts after owning it for a year...

I bought one brand new in 1992 when I get back from being stationed overseas. 5 speed with a spoiler on the back. Such a fun car to drive.

I own a 5 speed I bought brand new in 1993. After being a daily driver for about 15yrs I put her in storage. Last year I decided to get her on the road again as a summer car. Putting her back in storage for the winter made me sad but getting her back on the road last week was like Christmas. She's such a fun little car!!!

I got a new Paseo in 1993 Teale with the sunroof and five spoke rims. It is still my favorite car that I have owned. I put 268 thousand miles on it with no major issues. It crossed the US several times. I wish I 😢 still had it.

I love my paseo. I have a 93 paseo and I have had it for 5.5 years and I am currently doing maintenance to get it back into tip top shape. I have no doubt that it will run again. The engine is gold. I have zero complaints. It’s so much less complicated than a modern vehicle. The only thing is finding information about firing order or basic operating manual information. It’s a mysterious vehicle!

In two weeks from now, I'll buy my Paseo. Sunroof, reliable motor, comfortable seats for my 163cm height. Not common, looks like a pretty car. Drives like a fast speed demon. It is a MKII. from '97. I am used to the low seats of the Toyota company, so it is comfortable. If you drive it, you can see everything from inside. Easy to park and manuveur, so easy to reverse. Even if you have a bigger package to carry, then you can lower the backseats. This car is a miracle for me. Nowadays when most of the cars looks like a plastic soapholder this is really good looking. In the doors there are 2 steel tubes, built in for extra protection. That was included in every basic Paseo. The mileage is also good. 7 litres of consumption in 100km. Easy to maintain, easy to drive, this is a well packed of an industrial pearl from the 90s. Totally worth the price.

I picked up a 97 Paseo in the UK about 9 months ago now for just £500 and with 7 other cars on my fleet this one makes the most sense for shorter trips, as its so agile and lively. It needed a complete exhaust and cat which I picked up on eBay for £90. Apart from that and £40 to service it, its needed nothing and is as dependable as you would expect. I even took it to a cherished car show recently and it caught a lot of attention - some people had never heard of them and some thought it was a CRX! The only modification I have made is some 15" alloys from a Yaris, and a radio. Mine has a sunroof (removeable) which helped in warm weather, but agree a/c would be nice.

I have a 97 Toyota paseo convertible. I bought it when it was 3 years old and only had 13,000 miles on it from an 80 year old. My mechanic said it will last forever since it doesn't have all the bells and whistles. The top is Manuel. Mine has a/c. It's a must in Phoenix Arizona. Thanks for your review.

Fantastic, I owned a '97 when I lived in Canada. Had it about six years and only sold it when I moved away. Mine had AC, and was totally reliable, I barely had to do anything with it the whole time I owned it, and it could outperform many others on the road doing some pretty serious mountain driving in the Rockies in British Columbia and Alberta.

0:05 Just a shout out for the JAZZY seats - colorful in the 1980s-1990s style. Totally Wicked looks... FUN car to drive. Totally fun zippy little car, perfect for back and forth to work - short commutes - shopping, and date nights. Maybe not as fun for 6 hour drives... An absolute Gem to find used, with low miles and well kept. Top Toyota Quality 200,000+ mile engines that keep on zooming... :-)

The Paseo was my fav car. Owned it from 2008-2011 but due to motor laws in Singapore, I was unable to renew the certificate of entitlement (COE) and had to scrap it. Made it a lot easier when the head gasket blew 3 months before he car was due to expire. Nevertheless, you can't find one anymore on the roads here and I really wished I was able to hold it on to it much much longer. Peace!

My 1993 Paseo is my very favorite car I have ever owned. The one I had was that early 90s light blue Toyota put on the Tercel. It got between 32-41 miles per gallon. I really abused the car by driving it very hard. The engine can be a bit inconvenient to work on since the compartment is so small, but the two problems I came across was replacing the alternator twice and replacing a fuel pump twice. Luckily those parts are very easy to replace due to the alternator being positioned well and the fuel pump being easily accessible under the driver side back seat. Handles great and with a couple simple after market modifications and using performance filters, oil, tires and highest octane fuel sold at regular gas stations the benefits were quite noticeable. Faster acceleration, higher top speed and having performance tires really improves cornering. It is really fun and zippy for what it is. I've been considering purchasing another and finding a larger engine to install. Any ideas??? One other problem I forgot to mention is that the AC requires servicing more often than it should. Here in the US. Automatic transmissions are quite common in the Paseo. The fuel economy with the automatics seems a little lower than the 5 speed manual. If you buy one of these a 5 speed manual is the way to go. It can be quite zippy and fun to drive. When my Paseo was weighed down it actually still performed well even when pulling hills and driving mountain passes. Just gotta downshift and let those RPMs climb! It really handles higher RPMs very smoothly and I never worried about pulling a good 6,000 rpm. The little car that could...and does. I worked at a ski area for 5 years and I had to commute a mountain pass for 30 miles and it was quite steep with very pronounced turns and the elevation climb was nothing subtle. I am 5'3 inches tall so it was perfect for me. However I had plenty of male friends that would ride up and down to work with me. 2 men near 6 ft tall in the backseat (necks bent and bodies leaned to the side so they could fit) a friend who was 6'3" in the passenger seat. My snowboard on the back seat sticking between the front seats right up next to the shifter. A full weighted down car that had no problem climbing. My very favorite thing about this car is the weight distribution. It was so even. Whether it was weighed down with a bit over 600lbs of ski bums or now it didn't just handle the road amazingly. My friends lovingly dubbed my car the "Rocket Express" small, crammed in like a can of sardines but we always beat all of our coworkers to work. It held the road and handled like a dream in extreme weather conditions. The highway was extremely treacherous and I always passed people driving up in their fancy SUVs and pickup trucks. The aerodynamics of the car were extremely helpful in very windy conditions or driving next to semi truck. Even though the car was light wind wouldn't blow you all over the road. If anyone here has upgraded/swapped out the engine for something more powerful please let me know. My Paseo is currently living untouched at my family's property. Ideally I would like to trailer it, bring it up here and begin restoring it as a project but am also considering purchasing another to drive right now. My husband and I currently have 4 older vehicles just for fun. 1999 Mitsubishi Montero highest trim with best off-road package, 1999 Toyota Camry 4 cylinder basic trim 5 speed. 2007 Subaru Impreza 5 speed mid trim and our newest acquisition is a 2000 Ford Windstar minivan with the highest trim and all the fun features. We like to take very vanilla cars and fix them up a little for a hobby. Mostly we just enjoy driving different cars for awhile and selling them off so we can buy something else to drive for awhile. It's fun for us. But. I need a Paseo in my life and I want to make the precious tiny car into something that has atleast the horse power of typical midsized vehicles... Or maybe even better. I want it minimum 200 HP. But nothing too impressive. Just something fun to do!

hell yeah comrade, im about to get one for myself, your video kind of confirms my thoughts and yeah, It's precisely what i'm looking for, sort of a cheap fast and furious looking coupè, it doesn't look very well taken care of and might require a couple of extra $ to make it look nice. But Man, just like phones, some of us search for the feeling of disconnection, raw manlyness. Toyota is always durable and this Paseo proves u don't need million loads to steal looks. and yeah there's like 3 of these at my city. Salutes!, Also tercel spare parts are abundant and fits this car too, to it's quite cheap to repair!

Hi again! Great idea for another YT episode :) Looks like we think the same way about cars..I also prefer older cars than these from recent years... And as far as I remember my love was always Coupe body style.... I owned 90' Honda CRX 1.6 which was my dream car since I was 9 yo and got a Honda folder.. I had also 99' Bmw E46 323 Coupe.. first automatic car.. which I also miss since I sold it.. but back then It was to expensive to run... I had few others but recently because of life plans I had to think about kombi/wagon cars...so I bought.... Renault Laguna Coupe...:) and I love this car... there is only one more in my city...and it is come back to automatic.. hope to stay for a longer time with each other:) And Paseo.. great choice.. value for money... and I love the the color:) I would only think about some alloy wheels maybe... A/C - what would be the cost to install? And if I could afford 2 cars... I would look for 93' Honda Accord.... Coupe - of course ;)

I own my paseo for 4 years now and I love it! I also live in the Netherlands and sometimes got asked what car it was whenever I parked at a store or something lol. The funny thing is I bought it as our family second car. And we never owned two cars so I wanted something really cheap to test if the actual using cost of owning a second car would fit our budget. The previous owner asked €700,- for it but it had some issue. (Rust on side panel due to damage, timing belt needed to replaced and alignment was really off) so I said to be honest I really have my doubts. But if you really need to get rid of the car I will pay €350,- and they said yes. My plan was to ride with it as long as it broke down. Now 4 years later I stil own it. Now I’m thinking of restoring it and keeping it forever. LoL

Despite not being very powerful, these kind of cars are very fun to drive on winding roads and a large portion of paseo owners who are "wanabe racers" would be modifying their car to better suit that sort of driving. My 96 paseo is an absolute machine! Really impressed with the quality of the car, especially considering how much these cars cost brand new and the fact they are marketed to go up against the cheapest cars sold. the goofy wheel bearings pressed into the drums and the wheel bearings design is old school though kinda sucks. But the chasis and the DOHC 1.5l are very good on this car.

Here in Cyprus they are actually very common due to the fact that here we drive on the left hand side of the road and during the late 90s we had mass imports of used Japanese cars as they were very cheap. Down here if you look almost all the Paseos here have the Cynos badges which was the Japanese name of the Paseo, only a handful of the Paseos here have an actual Paseo label including mine which was ordered directly from the dealership in 96'.

Sweet! I saw your first video about Paseo two, or three months ago, short before I bought my own. It really helped me with decision. My car is silver, so not as pretty as yours, but with A/C. I hope it save my life next summer. ;D

Ha, that's awesome, I'm glad I was able to help! And I am jealous of your Paseo. Not having AC is really a big downside of this car.... but luckily, at least for the next 4 months it's not something I will have to worry about ;)

This dude saw my '93 Miata and he wants to sell his '93 Paseo to me for 1,000$ CAD. Hes a mechanic and had everything changed and maintenance checked on it. 80,000km if I'm not mistaken. Wondering if it's worth it

Nice review. I am thinking of buying one here in Greece. What about fuel consumption? Have you ever done an estimation l/100km?
@OMNIRADIUS5 жыл бұрын
Fuel consumption is very decent. In the city it's about 1 liter/ 10 km. On the highway it's around 1 liter/ 16 km

I had enjoyed you first video on the Paseo. You had commented to me "discerningmind Thank you for that awesome comment!" Well, you're still really loving this car so as I suggested in my first comments, go ahead now with A/C. Buy an entire Paseo from a recycle yard, remove the A/C system and other things you want for your car, then sell the recycle car back to the yard. It's less money this way if you're getting a lot of parts. But make sure you get everything from the A/C system like the computer, dual cooling fans, and the radiator. Everything that might be different in the A/C cars. If your Paseo isn't rotted than it has a long, long, life ahead of it. Continue to enjoy. I still love and enjoy mine. P.S. This time I hit the "Bell" icon so I know when you have a new release.

Thanks again for your comment and support. We are actually on a road trip right now with the loyal Paseo! I don't think I'll be going through the motions of building in A/C to be honest... I've learned to live with the occasional discomfort ;) She's got a few rust spots near the wheel arches unfortunately yes, but nothing to the point of being "rotten" so I'm sure we'll be okay for at least another year or two :)
@discerningmind5 жыл бұрын
For just another year or two I wouldn't bother either. I was thinking differently in that if you effectively take car of the rust spots I'm sure you can get ten years economically if you're not putting on heavy mileage/kilometers. Toyota just builds really good cars and this car has proven that already. Mine too.

I have had my Paseo for about 12 years now or so. I loved it ever since I got it and I kept it even when I got a different car. Recently I had to get some new keys made and told the dealership I have a Paseo and they were like "what car" lol 😂. Anyway I haven't had to do much at all to it and it has 320000 miles, and still gets 35mpg. THE ONLY complaint I have is the seats. They are too small for me.

I got a Toyota Tercel and that's a stupid question. Nothing bad about the car the last 500.000 and miles and more and gets over 40MPG.

Out of curiosity, granted that the back row seats are folded, can you sleep in that car using the trunk and the freed up space from the back row?

If you're not a tall person you might. But I seriously hope for your sake that you don't have to sleep in a Paseo 😉

Geweldige autootjes.

Didnt you think to put LPG/Gas instalation? what is the cost in NL?
@OMNIRADIUS6 жыл бұрын
No, this car it pretty economical already when it comes to fuel, so putting in an LPG tank would probably cost me more than it would save me ;) Also the road taxes become higher over here when you switch to LPG.
@hobbycreations46966 жыл бұрын
Hi. Don't worry about higher road tax. In this case it will be only 5 euro / month more then You pay for petrol (gas=25/lpg=30 per month in Noord Brabant). You will get it back in no time. Other story is that a proper LPG system for this car cost more then the car itself. Conclusion: consider it if You want to keep this car more than 2 years. After 2 years the cost of LPG system is back in Your pocket if You make like 10000 up to 20000 km per year. Greetings and good luck with Your SEO.

I bought a manual transmission 1995 Paseo a few months ago. LOVE the handling & pep around the city. I have had people taking pictures of it in parking lots because they've never seen one before, and one guy even offered to buy it, but I can't part with it - I love it too much!

@jurgenknepper1576 жыл бұрын
Wegenbelasting (officieel motorrijtuigenbelasting (mrb)) is niet afhankelijk van de bestuurder/eigenaar, maar van het gewicht van de auto, de provincie waar je woont en de brandstof van de auto.
