Honestly I don’t think the two movies should even be compared...Titangoji said it best, “why are these two movies even being compared, the only similarities are that they have Godzilla in them, that’s it....They are made in two different countries, different budgets, different messages, and different directors who have different visions” that honestly sums it up. Both movies are in totally complete different playing fields. It’ll be like trying to see who would win between a Shark and a Lion. It’s not necessarily fair to the movies. Wouldn’t a better comparison be to older goji films like the solo movies? Like the 54’ and 84’ movies? Because both those movies and shin had some political message. I understand it’s your opinion, I must say this was a lot better dealt with than certain Godzilla KZbinrs *cough cough* Gojira5400.....
@omniviewer21157 жыл бұрын
Normally, I'd agree, but the fact is that these movies were always going to be compared to each other, because of the one other thing they have in common: they're divisive. You have two contemporary G-films to choose from, and you say you think one is better than the other, whoever likes the other is going to be flabbergasted, and thus a debate will begin on the virtues and failings of each. Someone disagrees with you on the quality of a film, you'll want to know why, will you not? And if you think that person missed the point or is twisting the facts, you'll want to correct them, won't you? The more passionate the parties are about their favorites, the more fervently they'll defend their stances. Hence, a debate begins. It may not be an entirely fair comparison being debated, but it is inevitable. It certainly should not get to the place this one has gotten to, but the internet does have a tendency to bring out the worst in people. I did say in my list of best Kaiju movies that everything people say they get from Shin, I get from The Return of Godzilla, so that particular comparison is one I've touched upon before. Indeed, I think Shin pales in comparison to that movie. I am glad you found me rational in this regard.
@omniviewer21157 жыл бұрын
You mean like how Americans dislike their government in its current state? I didn't miss this point. I just don't think it saves the film.
@borsniel77676 жыл бұрын
i think its more you missed it in translation there man. there is alot going on in this film and most of it has to do with Japanese society as whole. you complain about the rebel outsiders never being shown as such but you also miss that they do show it from a Japanese perspective. tbh 2014 Godzilla was a shitty blockbuster that lacked any real soul and glaringly lacked Godzilla for much of it, while shin went back to its roots as social commentary. its just that this commentary was not made for a western audience.
@ryanwalters16826 жыл бұрын
AstroGoji2000 Well they share Godzilla. They both deal with an active human response, one from the prespective of the military abd the other from the prespective of the government. That's about it.
@tylermcneeley31365 жыл бұрын
@@borsniel7767 You say that, but the 2014 Godzilla has more character and emotion to it than Shin does. And sure, Godzilla wasn't onscreen for most of the film, but whenever he was onscreen he dominated it like Smaug in the Hobbit movies, and he acted like a living, breathing, and most importantly thinking creature, whereas Shin Godzilla is quite literally brain dead in his actions, just moving forward and only attacking when hurt. And even if you want to argue that Shin Godzilla went back to it's roots and had social commentary (which doesn't make a movie good), the original makes it pale in comparison. Not because western audiences don't get the commentary, but because we don't care about the characters in Shin Godzilla, cause they are just there to deliver exposition and be incompetent, while in the original film we actually got to know and care about the characters.

I enjoyed Shin Godzilla as a science fiction / political satire kind of movie than the Legendary film, which felt more like a by-the-numbers origin story for Legendary's Godzilla universe. That said, in a fight between the two monsters, the Legendary version would come out on top, on the simple fact that it can fire its atomic breath without being forced into a two-week coma afterwards.

I see your arguments about Shin lacking personality and agree with them. However, another viewpoint is that by making Shin the way he is, makes him more alien and more terrifying. @marksharkwalker81527 жыл бұрын
I concede defeat Omni. I loved both movies, and I still kind of like Shin more, but I find myself agreeing with all the character points you made. Maybe it’s the design and visuals that sway me more toward Shin? Maybe it is because you can actually see Shin even when it’s night. I dunno and at this point I guess I’m rambling a bit. The way I see it, both films could learn from each other. The actors, with a few exceptions, in legendary could be a bit more energized while those in Shin need more fleshed out. Shin could use a kaiju fight or two, and legendary would do better if we could clearly see Godzilla whenever he’s on camera. What it comes down to for me is that they are both Godzilla and I will always love Godzilla, both the high and low points. Besides, you will never truly grasp the greatest if you don’t have the worst for comparison.

I do agree that I found it hard to relate to anyone on shin Godzilla “though that is part of it being mostly aimed at a Japanese audience” but the major problem was that we didn’t SEE anybody die, we are constantly told,people are dying but we never really see it. And I definitely agree that shin doesn’t do fucking anything
@Godzillakingofkaiju17 жыл бұрын
Tanner Bruning Yeah. At least the 2014 film showed people dying onscreen and wasn't afraid to do so. That's kinda why that movie had more of an impact.
@tannerbruning8687 жыл бұрын
Ian Greene I feel it also hurts the message. The point of the movie is that the Japanese government is slow and ineffective and it’s costing lives. So when we don’t SEE it costing lives, the ineffectiveness leaves no impact
@Godzillakingofkaiju17 жыл бұрын
That's also why the 1954 movie was so much more effective. We saw people dying at the hands of Godzilla, we saw people dying after Godzilla's attack, we even saw people mourning after the attack. Shin Godzilla fails because it doesn't really show people dying nor the impact. Though we DO get to see people dying onscreen but it's like maybe, I dunno, two or three. In the original '54 movie, GMK, and 2014 Legendary movie, the sight of people dead, dying, or even traumatized was more impactful because we weren't seeing Asshole Victims get their comeuppance, they were just people trying to live out their daily lives and they were only punished just for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Y'know, it's kinda sad when an American-produced Godzilla movie from three years back has more gravitas than a movie that came out two years after from Toho.
@thenumbah1birdman6 жыл бұрын
We actually DO see people die in Shin. We see the PM and the Japanese cabinet die, we see a family die, and we see at least 1 tank crew get killed.
@thenumbah1birdman6 жыл бұрын
Well, the Japanese cabinet in the chooper was about 13, we see a family of three get killed, we also see a rotting corpse amongst some rubble, and at least one type 10 MBT got crushed by Godzilla when he flings a bridge at them. We see 2 B2 bombers get chopped in half, while the 3rd is also presumably destroyed (though we don't see it so I don't count it). That brings the kill count to 24 on-screen. In G2014, we have at least 10 people killed by the female MUTO during the Nuke raid, two janjira workers getting squashed by the male MUTO, and we see Mrs. Brody and her team die, as well as Joe. That's 18 kills.
@maniacalclefable13543 жыл бұрын
I prefer Shin Godzilla, because kamata-kun is best boi and Shin Godzilla truly feels like a natural disaster at points, not reacting to the military, and adapts to his situation with no emotion. Also the characters are not supposed to be great, and even then, they aren’t horrible. The characters aren’t really supposed to be relatable, because they are more like parts of a machine. In this way I feel the film is quite ingenious. Sure, this film has flaws, but I prefer Shin Godzilla to the MonsterVerse Godzilla trilogy. However, I think 2014 is my preferred movie. I’d say legendary is my preferred design, but Shin I think is a more interesting incarnation. 2014 beats Shin, but I still think Shin Godzilla is better than Legendary’s interpretation of the character. *( also Kayoko Ann Patterson is hot ngl )*

I disagree that the PM has no redeeming qualities. He is obviously very devoted to his people. He is unwilling to sacrifice civilian lives to do military strikes (it could be argued this is a bad decision but it is still shows he has a sense of humanity about him even when giving orders from a situation room). He even argues that even though he is in danger when Godzilla is approaching that he should not leave to make his own escape. It is only after others plead him to leave saying that he can't afford to be lost that he reluctantly agrees. The PM I think is more a well meaning very devoted leader who is hampered by the system of bureaucracy that Japan has. I was very saddened to see him die because of this. Yaguchi is able to do better because his team does not need to go through all those political hurdles to execute simple actions. That said, you're right that we still don't really know that much about him.

No joke I had an argument on Reddit almost 3 days ago that of people who think Omni was too generous about ford (which I disagreed with) and then there were people who think he hates shin Godzilla for no reason (which are probably people who have never seen his videos) and said he was a 2014 fanboy (which is stupid). Then it turned into an argument of whether or not Omni is full of himself when he meets people in real life (which is hopefully not true).
@myst17416 жыл бұрын
I agree with the character points. But i still enjoyed Shin. I however really liked how Godzilla was portrayed by legendary. Big reason is the fact it felt like a character, and i like Godzilla being this kind of neutral monster that hunts other monsters. Rather than Godzilla being the HERO or the Villain like he was in older films. Heisei's godzilla is my favorite for the same reason. Heisei Godzilla does some heroic stuff. But every time, it''s been in the pursuit of another monster, and leaves when the Monster is dead or flee's. As it doesn't really care about humans. it's more akin to protecting earth itself, or simply being territorial. I feel Legendary films captured what i personally loved about Godzilla, and americanized it. I do feel it spent to much time following the humans around, but this is basically a setup for films to come. So i'm willing to forgive it for that. Shin had nno interesting side-charaacters, and Shin Godzilla itself was just a monster to be defeated. I do think with more movies to follow it up, Shin Godzilla would get a lot more interesting.. but it still needs more to flesh it out.

I think the problem with the comparison in the first place is the audience. Godzilla 2014 was meant to be for a mainstream audience while Shin Godzilla was meant for the Japanese audience. The reason why the characters in the 2014 movie were more relatable because it's meant to appeal to everyone. Shin Godzilla on the other hand was supposed to invoke the Fukushima disaster and other natural disasters that have plagued Japan in recent memory. It's supposed to shock the Japanese viewer and remind them of the horror that was Fukushima but most foreigners wouldn't get that as they never experienced it. As for politicians in the movie, they are supposed to be unrelatable. In real life who actually relates to their politicians? In the U.S. we don't trust our politicians and I think the same can be said for Japan. Overall I think its depends on what you're looking for in a Godzilla movie.

In addition, in Legendary’s Godzilla, I really like when he looked at Ford “eye to eye” then disappeared into the smoke. I think you kind of missed the point entirely with Shin Godzilla. The movie was made to be a satire of Japanese politics. How for everything they do, they have to consult experts, they have a procedure for this, they have to have a committee for this, a ceremony. That's literally how Japanese politics are. And it's also how a world as modern as ours would realistically react to the sudden appearance of a giant monster. America would just be Kill it and get it over with, but that's not Japan. Japan is more "what is this, how do we deal with this?" And so on.

The whole point of shin is that you don't know what he's thinking, what's his motivation is, what is desire is, what the full extent of its power is, you can't tell what it's feeling it just stares. Not at anything in particular but just stares, it doesn't even blink. Shin is cosmic horror (the fear of unknown or unknowable) and he is literally in every way a abomination that should not exists but yet does because of some ungodly force. The whole point of him is that you don't understand him at all, he's a mystery. Something I've learned is that the less information you give the audience the more interested they will be in it and will want to watch more to find out the answers. with horror giving them less information makes the scary thing more scary simply because you have no idea what it's desires or abilities are like going up against a really hard boss for the first time. you dread the encounter because you don't know what you're up against. THAT is the reason shin is the way he is. you're not suppose to have a clear idea of what he is, you just know what he is capable of. Shin gojira and legendary gojira are opposites, one is a abomination while the other is natural. there whole design are so very different and yet very alike. wither you think one or the other is better is not important because both are successful movies that brought back godzilla.

remember, Shin Gojira was written to partially reflect the Japanese govt response to the Fukuoka disaster (spoilers, it wasn't a very well executed response). And as it was written more for a Japanese audience, the character issues you discus don't fully reflect how they view them. I'll focus on the comment of him viewing politics as "straightforward", that, combined with the way those he works with treat him during the beginning of the movie (as someone who needs to be looked after less he mess up again) is meant to convey his naivete. He is straightforward and easy going, and that's how he sees the world, even giving up his chance of "glory" by refusing to name the final operation after himself (I loved that they used the original army mobilization theme during that scene). The praying scene mentioned is more of a cultural thing, its meant to show that he cares for others and their deaths. I do agree that some of the characters portrayal is not the greatest, I feel that this is mainly due to the rushed feeling of the movie, which as intended to be seen as a almost panic to do "something" but kinda screwed with the pacing, and how we perceive the characters as we didn't get to know them. His portrayal could also have been intentional, as he had no truly defining characteristics he was basically just another office drone, a face in the crowd.......the every-man. An archetype that would let those who work jobs not too different to his to place themselves in his shoes, and be the guy who steps up, who has the plan. The smartest? no, The best? no. But the dedicated one, the one who is there, and the one with the can do attitude. Shin Gojira is more a natural disaster movie then a kijou movie. But this is more just my opinion of the such. Personally in the 2014 one, i didn't like Brody, felt he was a flat character with plot armor. But the kijou smack down was fun. I liked both movies. Do like the reviews though, keep it up.

I'm partial to legendary, but I actually enjoyed both movies pretty evenly. I do agree with your thoughts about the lack of characterization. But I think this is one of those things where you need to like a movie for what it is and not for what it lacks from the other. What I really enjoyed from shin was that there wasn't a single person hero. It's more about how the government and their protocol reacts to an unprecedented catastrophe. Every advancement is made by teams working together, and discussed by groups before being put into motion, with careful consideration for the population. But I think legendary did an amazing job at portraying godzilla as an ancient being. You can tell he's an old soul. But a good review with valid points! :)

From the moment you compared the human characters I knew exactly the trap you fell into, conflating a character's story with a character's character. Let's conduct the same test that was used to compare the Star Wars prequels with the OT; describe a character without talking about their job, their background, or anything circumstantial (I might be fudging the exact wording here). Describe the character and not their story Shin Godzilla has 1. the new-blooded optimist who wants a black and white view of the world 2. the more jaded mentor figure 3. the deadpan no nonsense lady 4. the spunky and flirtatious girl 5. the overly excited hyper dork and it was interesting seeing all of them degrading as the film went on Godzilla 2014 has 1. the tortured soul committed to the truth (who dies in the first act) 2. the person who understands sacrifice for the greater good (Steinz, minor character) 3. the nature-respecting guy (but major chara Serizawa is not) 4. Ford is uh...the main character Godzilla 2014 left me on such a high note compared to when I first watched Shin Godzilla, but tbh 2014 has not aged well for me while Shin Godzilla actually got better when I rewatched it And oh yeah, 2014's design is actually anatomically closer to what a real Godzilla would be: tree trunk like feet to support its weight, a small head to body ratio representative of true gigantism, and comparatively small dorsal fins to assist in hydrodynamics. Godzilla 2014 isn't fat, just "correctly" proportioned to what a real Godzilla would be

4. Ford is the family man. I think the test you're referring to was from Plinkett's reviews, but that test is flawed for a myriad of reasons. One of which is forgetting the one thing in character writing, consistency. A character's story and character (which can be goals, motivation, or personality) are what consists of a character. How much is enough to determine if a character is flat or round is usually done by comparison. What Omni did was found the characters of 2014 to be more rounded when compared to the characters of Shin. And since you brought up the Star Wars Prequels and the Originals, let's conduct the same test to compare the Star Wars OT with the Sequels. The OT has 1. A young man seeking adventure to become a jedi knight to rescue a princess and fight against a fascist government (Luke) 2. An old man seeking to rebuild the jedi by tearing down the empire and propping up a new generation (Obi Wan) 3. A man seeking payment for a smuggling job (Han Solo) 4. A woman seeking to protect innocent people (Leia) 5. A man in a suit seeking to prevent the rebellion from destroying the empire's ultimate weapon (Darth Vader) 6. A man seeking redemption for his mistakes (Lando) 7. An old man seeking to turn our young hero to the dark side and maintain his empire (Palpatine) These people go on journeys and their actions reflect their interests until their interests are met or changed by events, events that are caused by choices other people make based on their own interests. These interests are better when they are consistent with their characteristics. This generates a plot and the strong spine of a story. Now what do the Sequels have? 1. A girl waiting for her family and joins a resistance and pulls off amazing feats without any training (Rey) 2. A man who betrays his faction to reduce harm but doesn't bother telling anyone about a superweapon and constantly falls over (Finn) 3. A man who is the "Best Pilot" and gets abused by women for simply wanting to save his comrades (Poe) 4. A girl mourning her sister one second and is bubbly the next second (Rose) 5. A commanding officer who is intimidating one scene and is turned into a rag doll the next (Hux) 6. A chrome officer who looks cool but is actually a coward (Captain Phasma) 7. A cowardly grump (Luke) 8. A meat puppet (Snoke) 9. A space wizard (Palpatine) Now, I do like watching the Sequels, but they are objectively poorly written films.

Very interesting and thought provoking video. Like I said before, I enjoyed both films when I first watched them, but upon second viewing, they both left me cold, so I've been entertained watching everyone sharing their views on the films (especially yours). There's only one aspect of the two films that I've always preferred one over the other, and that's Godzilla himself, being Legendary's rendition. Again, another great video.

Hey, I was feeling a little curious about something, in the video where you gave your thoughts on the MLP movie, you said you were going to review it when it comes out on DVD, and it came out on DVD over a month ago. I’m going to offer a way out, bizarre, rebellious, misfit opinion and say that both movies are enjoyable lol. As a Godzilla fan I don’t see why fans of the same thing have to fight over this. I own just about every Godzilla movie made (with the exception of Godzilla’s Revenge lol), I bought Godzilla 2014 and Shin Godzilla as soon as they were available because I liked both for their own particular merits. 2014 is a decent monster romp, and I enjoyed the subtext and political satire of Shin. The vision and intent of both movies is so different I don’t see how one can objectively compare the two, let alone fight over it the way some people are. I think we all have our favorite, and it’s different for each person. I would watch Shin first if I had to choose one or the other, I just enjoyed it more, but that’s me. I liked the point you made that so many criticisms people on both sides make could be said about either movie. They both have flaws, I think fans just go with the one that resonates with them personally. It’s a shame but I don’t think we will get a Shin 2. So many questions you had from the first film would have been answered in the second I think. Oh well... at least we can all agree than Godzilla King of the Monsters looks AWESOME

There was not much the Hawk Muto could do to Godzilla on his own anyways. Sheesh!

I think the main reason Shin Godzilla doesn't have much of a personality is because hes a new and evolving species, it probably doesn't possess complex thought as we know it yet, so maybe it was supposed to be part of its character arch through out the series.

I do not see why people dislike the new models for Godzilla, to me they don't look fat, and actually Godzilla has always had gills even from the very first he's always been a sea dwelling creature with gills. Sure the film's may not have been the best, but the Godzilla models actually aren't that bad. Those who say Godzilla having gills is a big deal obviously don't know Godzilla's history.

I think the characters in 2014 are more flawed than Shin is because 2014 had a bunch of cookie cutter characters. The husband with credentials trying to rescue his wife and kid from peril. The motives in Shin may be shallow but at least they're kinda fresh. The two best characters in 2014 were Serizawa and Joe Brody...who were both vastly under-utilized. Sure, killing Joe provides some motivation for Ford but Ford's military skills are never used in the movie. And, the only things Ford's wife and kid do is hide and be scared. At least Shin actually makes an attempt at a strong female character. While I like 2014 a lot, without Godzilla in it, it'd be Independence Day or Armageddon or any other disaster movie. The best Godzilla movies are the ones that aren't about Godzilla.
@omniviewer21154 жыл бұрын
"The best Godzilla movies are the ones that aren't about Godzilla." The only Godzilla movie I can think of that is not truly about Godzilla is All Monsters Attack, aka Godzilla's Revenge. That movie is 100% about Ichiro and his journey, while Godzilla and the other Kaiju - most of whom only appear through stock footage - are just fabrications playing out scenarios in his mind. Taking your statement at face value means All Monsters Attack is the final word on high quality in the Godzilla series, superior even to the 1954 original. Unless there is more nuance to it, in which case, how do we define something being "about" Godzilla? One of the major critiques from fans upon first viewing was that the 2014 film is not about Godzilla, but rather reduces him to a supporting role. That may be debatable, but you also say above, and I quote: "While I like 2014 a lot, without Godzilla in it, it'd be Independence Day or Armageddon or any other disaster movie." This implies that you, too, believe that G14 is not about Godzilla, but is rather a Disaster film done up to look like a Godzilla film. But you are making your statements to downgrade the the movie's quality, even though it contradicts your closing statement. So are the best Godzilla films about Godzilla or not? And if it's the latter, why do Godzilla films exist at all? "And, the only things Ford's wife and kid do is hide and be scared. At least Shin actually makes an attempt at a strong female character." Would that be the Rei Ayanami clone who gets no development, or the special envoy who turns from a loud American stereotype to a mouthpiece for Japanese nationalism on a dime? The female characters in Shin are exactly the same as the male characters: one note and not even half-realized. Points for equality of the sexes, I guess, but that still doesn't make them interesting characters. One of them is an emotionless exposition source, and the other doesn't have anything interesting revealed about her until the movie is nearly over. Kayoco, in fact, has very little screen time, and what little she gets crams all of the character development in at once, which makes it unnatural. Her presence ultimately adds nothing truly special to the film, and her presence has no personal affect on the other characters at all. Ford's nuclear family might not get the most development or see the most action, but their role in the film makes sense and is not so easily removed. Even if they are only McGuffins, they are McGuffins the protagonist cares about and wants to save, which is automatically a higher level of emotional investment than anything presented in Shin. Though in context, what else are they supposed to do other than hide and be scared? They are civilians, after all; they can't do much of anything else. Their presence provides a face for the masses, and while it may not be the most proactive role in the film, it is still important. "The motives in Shin may be shallow but at least they're kinda fresh. " A stale potato chip is still more edible than a fresh dog turd. Just because something is fresh, new, or different doesn't mean it works as intended, and as you know by now, I don't think any of the new elements in Shin work at all, so I won't repeat myself in this reply.
@angelafisher80976 жыл бұрын
When you were talking about the scenes in Godzilla 2014 that gave Godzilla personality, I was surprised that you didn't mention the scene after Godzilla was trapped under a building where he and Ford Brody have a small moment together and how during that moment, Godzilla briefly closed his eyes in , showing how he might be facing defeat and he somehow understands what Ford is going through. Why didn't you mention this scene?
@omniviewer21156 жыл бұрын
I didn't mention it specifically for two reasons. Firstly, it was not part of the scene where Godzilla kills HokMUTO. There's a bit of space where we catch up with Ford before we get to it. In order for the comparison to the Shin scene to be as fair as possible, I had to make sure the scene in question was self-contained. Counting that moment as part of the HokMUTO scene would have been misrepresenting the sequence of events. Secondly, I feel that scene is best left open to interpretation. It's a very ethereal scene, a moment where the naturalistic mindset slips away and brings Godzilla back to the realm of mythology. As such, I feel it can be read numerous ways, and I wouldn't want to impose any singular interpretation on it. The HokMUTO scene is one I felt was more concrete, where it is crystal clear what Godzilla is thinking and how he feels, so it better served the point I was making. That being said, I did include the scene in my closing statements specifically because I think it is another great example of showing us who this Godzilla is.

I personally love Ford and his awkwardness, I enjoy the film very much because I project myself into him even though I'm not a soldier with a tragic backstory. It makes me on edge as if I'm not sure what I should or going to end up doing because memories of my mother suddenly came back when I met my father again and then losing said father, as well as having my family being in danger by something I've never seen before. You'll be awkward as well if you are constantly in fear of losing your family after your father died. Now do I think this is what director Gareth Edwards intended? Probably not, but it doesn't change the fact that I felt that throughout the movie.

I actually liked Godzilla 2014 and Shin Godzilla for the same reason: they handled the kaiju well for the scenes that were given to them. Both movies had great atmosphere for the kaiju. The former had shown just how massive and powerful the kaiju really are and that their fights can cause serious damage depending on what location they're in. The latter shows just how nightmarish and god-like its kaiju can really be and demonstrates how deadly it can actually (a true god of destruction). While the human stories fall flat in some areas. 2014 gets more points because Cranston performs a little better than some. While Shin just kind of has talking heads. But it's expected when the former and latter are character-driven and plot-driven films. Some have their likes and dislikes... I myself am not picky when it comes to Godzilla. I do have expectations, but not enough to be hyper picky. lol

To add to Omni's point towards the end it's not just how Shin Godzilla begins like Evangelion, but in fact some of the music used is straight from the Evangelion series and some of the movies as well. Granted this was done with Funimation as they have done the more recent Evangelion movies, but I would think they would prefer to stick with music that is more related to Godzilla traditionally then anime. Not saying it doesn't work, in some ways it kinda did, but hearing felt like I was watching some kind of off kilter-ed live action anime adaptation then an actual Godzilla movie. Characters are important, same as plot, but music also helps set the tone of how dramatic scene is to feel or how comedic and light hearten it can be as Guardians of the Galaxy has done. And sadly, not all of the music did that, some of it seemed a bit off key in a few places. And as stated before, it felt like more of a live action anime adaptation then an actual Godzilla film because not only the initial setting, but a number of the characters their presentations, and the music as well. This might have done better if say there had been an actual anime adaptation done using Shin Godzilla as the bases and extending it out as a series as Omni had also pointed out with other anime series starting in similar circumstances. Gives time to know the characters, understand them, and form a bond to some of their struggles. But here, you're not afforded the time to do so. Even trying to understand Godzilla himself is also robbed, for all we know he might have had a reason to do things he did. But there was no time, and he unfortunately ended being less then favorable then Zilla from 1998. And before you say they are nothing alike I'm going to stop you right there and say yes they are and can prove the similarity. Zilla was able to reproduce A-sexually, meaning he didn't need a mate, Shin towards the end had smaller Shin Godzilla creatures starting to sprout from the tip of the tail after it had been frozen. But I'm getting off topic, getting back to Shin Godzilla vs Legendary, the music for Legendary was more on point with giving the feel of just how massive and monstrous the scenes with Godzilla and the MUTOs felt and were. Or the scene involving the HALO jump sequence felt very climatic and jarring as the all you can hear is the breathing as they fall through a storm into a ruined San Francisco with Godzilla fighting the Hawk MUTO. You can't hear the fight itself, but hearing the wind rushing, the heavy breathing through the O2 mask, the flashes of lightning, and the scene of towering monsters battling it out as you see traces of red smoke stream through the clouds leading to this... Yeah, enough said. You get a far better grasp of the gravity of the situation in that then at any point in Shin Godzilla. Only comparable scene in that would be the night scene before and even after the bombing as well some of the aftermath scene, but in essence it falls short to Legendary for the vast majority. And to further add to this, I just recently found and watched a video that was done that listed reasons for why Legendary was better. Oddly enough it also made mention of the soundtrack and had similar remarks to my own. Bare in mind I've never seen this up until now as I was looking at videos involving the new upcoming Godzilla for 2019, looking for anything on what the other monsters are supposed to look like or get a better idea for that. Trailer showed bits and pieces, but trying to get a clue as to what Rodan's and Mothra's abilities are since Godzilla and King Gidorah's powers seen and known by now, and seeing what is to come for the actual Godzilla anime that Netflix has. In fact I believe Marconicus named the creator now looking at it, gojira5400. The only reason I saw this and Goji's was they were on the right hand column of what might be considered comparable videos to material your watching or stuff you have watched in the past and would like to either re-watch or view for the first time. Will say Omni did better at being respective and logical in his explanation then Gojira5400 in comparing for the vast majority, less biases point of view. However Gojira5400 had pointed out exactly what I was pointing out in the music department to some degree, it felt more like a live action anime then an actual Godzilla movie. Not all of it felt original or there were some off keyed scenes in relation to the music they played. And as stated before the night scene and HALO jump scene are the best from both movies and the most comparable. But it's the music that sets that apart. Shin used 3 different songs, all of which flowed well into one another and help set the tone of the situation through out that sequence. But the rest of the movie was a bit off keyed with the music in a number of scenes. Legendary was consistent in their choices for either original material or music that set the tone for the scene. The one thing I will give Shin is acting, there was better acting consistently through out Shin then Legendary, especially with their leads. Other then that Legendary wins rest of the categories out of consistency then Shin.

I have a theory about Shin Godzilla, while my proof isn't concrete, nor is it inexcusable for the movie, it's just my thoughts. For the longest time, I couldn't figure out why it came ashore, but I believed I've found the answer. It was said that Godzilla was feeding on nuclear waste for 60 years, that material changed it into a completely new, self evolving, and unpredictable organism. Once Godzilla was done feeding under the sea, it came ashore, probably sensing a new food source. While it crawling, it was (supposedly) consuming organic material. As for its movements, it was probably on a predetermined course, possibly to a nuclear source, but was saw, it was moving too slow. So it stopped to evolve. Then as it "walked", continuing its present course, it was forced to stop because its body was overheating. Once it reached a high temperature, it fled to cool down. Once it cooled down, (and evolved again) it resumed it's predetermined course. If not in Tokyo, at least somewhere passed it. While still having little to no intelligence, it still reacted if it felt like it was in actual danger (Stealth Bomber and Train Bomb scenes). As for its self recharging of atomic energy, weeks of sleep like that would charge me up too. Also after it expelled its atomic energy, it tried to keep moving before completely stopping in its tracks due to overheating again. Still, in the end, this is all just an unsaid theory.
