OMNY: New info in November 2023 (new fare caps, vending machines!)

The MTA is making it easier for people to ditch the Metrocard over the next year in favor of the tap-and-go system. Not only has the OMNY system adopted a 7-day rolling fare cap (use the same card/device for 7 days, starting any day of the week, and you'll be capped at $34 for unlimited rides), but they are allowing people to buy cards from machines. This helps people with kids, or those who want to pay cash.
Machines will come to all stations in the next year or so, but for now can be found at:
*Manhattan
86th Street and Lexington Avenue (4, 5, 6 trains)
Bowling Green (4 and 5 trains)
*Brooklyn
Atlantic Avenue-Barclays Center (2, 3, 4, 5, B, D, N, Q, R trains)
*Queens
Junction Boulevard (7 train)
*The Bronx
Fordham Road (4 train)
Fordham Road (B and D trains)

especially tourists should think about buying an OMNY card, considering many banks charge (sometimes extremely high) foreign transaction fees.

I gave OMNY a try last June when I came to NYC for a long weekend. I had to buy it at a small retailer near Jackson Heights-Roosevelt Ave station, but I was able to load $33 on it for a week pass(I got to my 12th tap on my 3rd day of the 5 day trip). I love the fare capping system. I hope other cities can catch on with it as well. It would be nice if stations like 34th Street Penn Station, 42nd Street PABT, Howard Beach, Sutphin Blvd-Archer Ave, and Jackson Heights Roosevelt Ave would get these OMNY card vending machines, as those are the stations that most tourists would use 1st on their trip coming in from Amtrak, the PABT, or the airports.

More and more stations are getting the vending machines, but in the meantime, remember that any tap-style credit card along with smart phones can work, too. And if you use one of your credit cards or a phone, there's no need to pay the $1 for the card.

I was able to reload my omny card today at 86th & Lex. Really easy to use. Love it already.

The rolling 7 day window is a game changer for omny. When I was in New York in Febuary, I was really looking forward to finally just use my smartphone for access and not get frustrated with the Metrocard anymore (especially coming in via JFK and the AirTrain. So buying two goddamn Metrocards within 5min, just because someone decided you cannot use the AirTrain Metrocard for Unlimited passes). But the joy didn't last long, once I realized (luckily before I first used my phone on a reader) it only runs from Monday to Sunday. I was there from Thursday to Tuesday. So yeah, Metrocard once again.....

Agreed that the rolling week is a game changer. However, there was no need for two different MetroCards--you can put both time and money onto the same card and the subway and AirTrain will deduct the appropriate method off of the same card. The AirTrain will take its cash, and then the subway will begin to use your weeklong pass. When you get back to the AirTrain, it will look for more cash. That combination system was worked out years ago with the MetroCard, so that part is pretty convenient. Still, the newer rolling week with OmNY is the way to go.

@@ajs11201 but it only works if you already have a valid(not expired) Metrocard bought in the Subway System. If you come in as visitor with no Metrocard, you are forced to buy a Metrocard before the AirTrain Turnstiles at Jamaica or Howard Beach. These Metrocards, which display an AirTrain logo on the back, can not support unlimited passes. You can use them in the subway system, but only as pay per ride with balance on the card.

Current plan is Metrocards will remain available and in use through 2025.

@@Maurdemurde Yes, they are using Metrocards, which became the main payment method in the late '90s, but will be discontinued in a few years.

Do OMNY Card have 30 day and 7 day unlimited too? If yes, how do i do it? Cause it might be a bit different on the screen machine.

Sorry for the late reply. OMNY ends the concept of pre-buying an unlimited card. Replaced with a fare cap.... In a 7-day period from your first swipe, after your charges hit $34 (the price of a weekly unlimited), you can tap away the remainder of those 7 days and not be charged.

@@customnyctours And to add: OMNY has no monthly variation. With OMNY, everything is based on a weekly maximum. For heavy users of the subway, that's a bit of a loss, but I guess the convenience of not having to reload your MetroCard every week or month makes up for it.
