Some notes:
Touching toast does that thing no matter if you have Mari or not
The toast can only bring you down to 1 health, not kill you
Daddy Longlegs is around 19 floors down.
The second ladder area looks kinda like inside the doll.
The area is called "HAUNTED TREES HANGING MAZE"
The ladder room is called "SMALL ROOM WITH A LADDER" and room with Mari is called "ROOM WITH HELL MARI"
The room of the other ladders is called "FACES OF OMORI"
Since it's possible to enter this hub through regular blackspace but not later, you can get stuck with the face on your screen on the Sunny route.
This is very likely a Yume Nikki reference

So in other words, Red Maze is a part of Sunny's mind where all of the trauma he buried so far back into his subconscious is. We can see that because of the toybox we find VERY VERY far down the ladder. And at the very bottom is the core of his trauma, his sister, of which he buried the deepest where he wouldn't ever come across it intentionally. And because of the mental consequences of letting his trauma fester by going the hikikomori route, we have blacker space, filled with things arguably more disturbing than black space when Omori actually decides to confront it.

[SPOILERS FOR THE TRUE ROUTE] Many take the HellMari face being so deep down that ladder as a sign that she's been repressed into one of the darkest recesses of his mind, likely because of Mari's death being the source of his trauma. But I think it's more than that. After all, we see Mari all the time in Headspace. I think what HellMari represents is specifically the anger Mari showed to Sunny right before he pushed her. It's a face that has been warped into something unlike Mari's because she legitimately scared him, and because her being that angry was so unlike her. Sunny didn't just bury Mari down there. He specifically buried the memory of how terrifying she was, in the moment right before Sunny gave that fatal push.

Deciding to write a comment about this here since I just noticed and haven't found anyone saying anything about it, but for some reason I looked up a full map of the red maze and on the right side, there's two clearly visible black letters, 'K' and 'M.' There's also something that kind of looks like an 'S' in red right after the 'M,' so it kind of looks like it says "KMS." But yeah, just look up "omori red maze" on google and you'll find a full maze and from there, you can find where it says "KMS," both the "KM" are black and the 'S' is red.
