I have the Yellow and Black one, got it in 2019 and in my basement. Converting to auto focus/Z axis control is difficult due to the belting system, which I am still working a solution to. You can't find the Y&B anymore, but I feel it was worth every penny I paid for it. I even made a matching workbench/tool cabinet to it. One thing you didn't mention is the true wattage. The 60 watt is actually a 50 watt continuous, 60 watt peak, and the 100 Watt is 90 watt continuous, 100 watt peak. If you want 60 or 100 watt continuous, you need to replace the tube and in some cases the power supply. If you don't dial down the peak power, the tubes wont last long. To find the true wattage, measure the length and diameter of the tubes and use online charts. One other thing, that 100 watt looks a LOT like the Mira 9, but I'll bet it is NOT a $12K laser.

I am looking at a. Omtech 1630 auto focus model, still on the fence though after reading and researching for the past week I am finding out different manufacturers recommend between 70 and 80 percent of max power during use to keep the tube alive longer, so at 70 percent power it turns a 70 watt into a 50 basically, did you step up to the 100 watt because you found your 60 watt didn't have enough power or to speed up your work?? This would be my first laser and I don't want to find out i should have spent a little more money up front on a larger laser, I am.just a hobby machinist these days since retirement and enjoy my time in the shop tinkering, I would be using the laser for personal projects, not for a business. Any thoughts would be appreciated

As of today, 10/21/23, it looks like the removable base only comes with the auto focus machines. Can you confirm that? I am getting ready to order a machine, and while I think AF would be nice, the removable base raises it up so it's workable standing. Really, the base is what I would be sold on, as I'm tall and otherwise would have to build a base for the laser. Also, how long have you had your lasers, and what kind of issues if any have you had? It's pretty hard to get a hold of OMtech to ask and questions.

Yes the AF machine in a 2028 have the removable base. It’s pretty noticeable when you see the pictures of the machines. I have three omtech lasers and the oldest is 4 years old. So I’m looking at buying either the 60W or 80W from Omtech. My question is is there a huge difference in speed between the two? I’m using them to engrave ceramic tile and the issue I’m running into with my current one (30W different brand) is that it’s not engraving evenly and the right side of the engraving ends up lighter than the left. So I’m trying to upgrade to one that does a dark, even engraving on tile. Which do you recommend? Also, my office where I have my current machine is in my house. How hard is it to move into the house for setup? Will it even fit lol? And how heavy is it? I tried to look on the website for guidance but it didn’t share the weight of the machine from what o saw anyways. Thank you!

My Redsail actually fit through my front door with .5 inch to spare. Without removing base or rotating it. Most the time.. Remove base, put on its back and slide it in. Furniture dollies help. They are all about 250lb.

Hey there from Ireland! Enjoying your videos a lot. They are extremely informative. I am in the process of setting up a shop and intend on doing personalised gifts for a broad range of areas. I will though be doing mug, glass and tumbler engraving. I note with interest the remark you made (@ 3:25) regarding the tray bottoming out when using a rotary. Is this a design flaw with this particular model as I will need a stress free easy way to be able to switch to a rotary to do these products. This machine seems like it would make the process extremely inefficient for a shop. Can you elaborate or give me a suggestion for a machine that would handle this task better? As it will be a store, I am prepared to ammend my budget to accommodate the best machine to do all jobs, from flat material to drinkware. I appreciate your time on this question.

On the controller you press the z/u button and then use the left and right arrows for the bed to go up and down. Then ESC to go back to normal operation.

Thanks, Bearded one. How has OmTech support been?. Was the beam aligned out of the box?. I have a regular entry-level K40 and am familair with aligning the pain in the butt mirrors. I blew the tube and replaced it with one from OmTech. They did have amazing customer service and I like the fact that they are in California as I am too (I am in NorCal (Roseville area).

I have siemens outlets on my redsail. We will see if they fail. If i have problems.. I will change them out. But i have more faith in a brand name. The omtech and the USB ( replica of omtech) are pretty well built. The no name ones on ebay.. Just closing the back lid can mess up mirror cal.

Great video. Its always good to have a side by side comparison. I have been looking at the OMTech brand laser for a couple of months. What are the limitations of the 60watt laser besides cutting size? Did you buy a 100watt just for a larger cutting bed or does it allow for different material? Do you find that you use the 60w for thinner material or is it more precise? Perhaps this is another video.
@BeardedBuildsCo
@BeardedBuildsCo 3 жыл бұрын
Cut area and being able to cut fast has been the biggest reason for the 100w purchase. It will cut thicker materials easier as well. I will most likely keep the 60w set up to run tumblers and the 100w will do most of the cutting.

Can you please share your thoughts on the 2in1 80W OMTech laser? I am especially interested in if the two laser heads can work together on one cut, or if they work in parallel so that you can only have them do the exact same movements at the same time. - Thanks

What model is the 100 watt? Is it an af2440? If so is there ANY way to get it through a standard 36 in door?
@BeardedBuildsCo
@BeardedBuildsCo 2 жыл бұрын
It will be tight but if you take off the casters and all the lights and buttons off the top it will get it down to about 34 1/4” tall. Turn it on to its back and squeeze it through. That being said if you have more than one door to go through it is going to be a struggle.

@@BeardedBuildsCo Yes you're right - actually about that, are there any build\design differences between red\black vs blue, aside from bed size and motorized -z options? in general im leaning towards an 80 watt red and black, someone else had told me they recently replaced some switches and proximity sensor, not clear if that was due to failure of some sort.
