Unilateral biportal endoscopy is a new minimally invasive technique for the treatment of lumbar spinal stenosis and lumbar disc herniation. Uniportal endoscopy was used before the advent of unilateral biportal endoscopy and has been considered the cornerstone of endoscopic spine surgery for lumbar discectomy and decompressive laminectomy. However, unilateral biportal endoscopy has theoretical advantages over traditional uniportal endoscopy, including that the procedure uses readily available typical spinal equipment, requires less capital cost and optical instrumentation, and provides greater operational flexibility as a result of using both a working and viewing portal.
