@Paresh Patel I read two books regarding that 7 years before. Bhutan is the first country which officially recognize Bangladesh. USA has sent 7th fleet and Soviet Union has sent 7th fleet in retaliation towards bay of Bengal. Soviet Union has vetoed twice for Bangladesh in UN. And Indira Gandhi was visiting continuously for the support for Bangladesh and was standing for Bangladesh like a iron lady. That's why Bangladeshis love her so much and Russia , Bhutan and India are Bangladesh's close friends. As for other countries, if Bangladesh doesn't maintain a relationship, then Bangladesh will have to stop relationship with almost everyone. Every country works for their self interest. Bangladesh is not different. Even India has a good relationship with UK(the previous colonizer) or South korea are so close to Japan.

@@sankalpn5669 Again , the main question whether Kashmir should remain in India , join Pak or be independent is a political problem where the involved parties are Pak , Indian govt and Kashmiri people. It depends on how this three sides want to play this but at the end of the day it is a political problem. Kashmir could have been easily assimilated into India if India did not try to destroy democracy in Kashmir during Nehru era. The problem aggravated as Indian state consistently undermined democratic system in Kashmir , rigged election arrested leaders etc. And Pak kept pushing insurgent to fan dissatisfaction among Kashmiris. Its all political.

Before partition of India, Manekshaw and Yahya Khan (President of Pakistan during 1971 war) were friends and on the staff of Field Marshall Sir Claude Auchinleck. Sam Manekshaw owned a red James motorcycle, which Yahya had an eye on. He offered to buy the motorcycle for Rs. 1000. Manekshaw agreed to sell the motorcycle. Partition happened and Yahya took the motorcycle to Pakistan, never paying the thousand rupees he owned to Sam Manekshaw. After the Instrument of Surrender was signed on 16 December 1971, Gen. Sam Manekshaw was heard saying, “Yahya never paid me the Rs. 1,000 for my motorbike, but now he has paid with half his country.” Sam Bahadur had a wicked sense of humour 😂

Great episode sir. Proud to be Indian and Hindu. As a kid always wondered why we should invest in army so much when our first aim should be to eradicate poverty and equal life for all. But now understand how much our army sacrifices to save our nation 🙏 I recently read 3 million Hindus in East Pakistan were killed during March to December 1971. Women were subjected to extreme violence. The statistics and incidents left me numb. Indian army helped liberation for Bangladesh and our Hindu brothers and sisters sacrificed their lives there, but how are Hindus treated in Bangladesh today? Something to ponder.

What are objectives India achieved from 1971 war... 1. Millions of persecution in East Pakistan stopped straightaway 2. Flow of Millions of refugees to India was stabilised. 3. India attained peace in indo-bangladesh border unlike indo-pakistan border... 4. India achieved time to settle issues in the North East. 5. India drastically lowered the cost of Indo-bangladesh border management. 6. India, for some time, was able to minimise the radicalisation in in bangladesh in absence of rogue ideology of totalitarian Pakistan. 7. India was able to stop the nuisances of Pakistani navy in bay of Bengal where India has very big stake. 8. Pakistani Concept of security of East Pakistan lying in the West was wiped out which regularised Pakistani psycho of misadventures which further worked as deterrent in the context of war n peace in hard-core reality... 9. Pakistani resources out of East Pakistan which was being used against India was eliminated. .......... .......... .......... .......... ..........

brilliant analysis. today's generation doesn't understand the turbulent times of 60's India. I think the 65 war is the most important war in the history of India. We almost lost Kashmir had we have not opened the front in Lahore front and internally we had problems in the Northeast and South and the economy was in ruins. But we came out of it to make a better India

Shekhar ji seem to be wrong here that India didn't benefitted: 1: India after 1971 did not had to worry about East any further as pakistan was gone. 2: Wars stopped after 1971 event in this region as this made indian opponents understand that India was a force to reckon with, thus bringing peace for india. 3: Indians got a sense of pride which was at all time low because of loss of 1962

I happened to see a dog fight between IAF and PAF planes at Baroda in broad day light at around 9:30 AM. With civil defence sirens blaring, I stood out watching the dog fight rather than taking cover. Until a shrapnel (perhaps from a ground battery fire) fell near my feet. It was searing hot. It was around 8th or 9th Dec

Gupta ji I probably have a slight disagreement on war didn't solve any problem for India. Before 1971 whenever India got into any conflict with Pakistan, it had to worry about two front conflict in East and West Pakistan. But with 1971 creation of Bangladesh, this head ache was reduced. Politically probably India lost an opportunity to solve Kashmir problem, but militarily India got what it was hoping for. It basically permanently eliminated any possible two front war scenario with Pakistan forever in future. This is one big relief.

We had 9 sector each had sector commander. the war was for 9 months not 13 days. Many of the areas were freed before India devlare the war. Thanks to India for your help & most importantly withdraw troops swiftly (cradit goes Bangabaandu). I am really sad, the Print is becoming blind eyed.

I thought Shekhar Gupta a good and learnt journalist. But today I realize how mistakenly wrong I was. He has just said that there is no gain for India from the 1971's war. But what he failed to realize is that East Pakistan had a huge border with India. India's longest border sharing unit was East Pakistan then and now Bangladesh. There would be a huge chance for the Islamabadi Pakistani cracks to use East Pakistan to destabilize peace in Eastern India. Which India is not facing today because of Bangladesh. There would be attacks like Mumbai's 26/11 on Kolkata but today, nothing is happening as it is not a Pakistan at all and we Bengalis are not the one who ruins one's asset to harm another. This 1971 war was a game changing move from Indira Gandhi but I do not know why here Shekhar Gupta completely fails to realize it. Shame... and I also noticed many times that he criticizes Islamization. Here I smell the limits of his liberalization.

Sir, DMK under C.N.Annadurai dropped the Dravida Naadu demand in 1962 after the war with the Chinese broke out. They were very much part of the Indian federal system in 1967 when they were elected to power in the then Madras state. Wanted to point out this error... But absolutely love CTC. Thanks for doing a fantastic job and hope you have recovered from your recent illness.

Best example of wars not settling any disputes and giving room for next war is World War I. The heartless treatment of Germany by the allies, and huge back breaking war indemnity by Versailles treat forced Germany to prepare for the next war against entire Europe. There is a Sanskrit proverb: "Yuddhasya vaartaa ramyaa...". The news of war is romantic, not necessarily the war itself. Hemingway's Fairwell to Arms is a good approach to war from this perspective. The fact that India survived the decade of 1960s should give confidence to us that India will survive and thrive too. That is a lesson for nay sayers about India.

One thing I remember about this time is the daily blackouts in Bengaluru although it was way out of range any fighter plane Pakistan had possessed at that time. Windows of All houses were covered with brown paper and they used simulate air raids at least once a week. My maternal uncle was part of MEG and participated in the war in Army Engineering division in the Eastern sector.

Leningrad (1.42)? Surely you mean Stalingrad! Leningrad ( St Petersburg before and after Soviet era) never fell to the Nazis. The Soviets successfully defended Leningrad for nearly 4 years. In Stalingrad (Volgograd now) the Nazis took parts of the city but were then surrounded and taken prisoners by the Soviet Armies.

As a Pakistani I disagree with you. After winning 1971 war India weakened Pakistan created Bangladesh and achieved its military objectives. Similarly, if Pakistan have won whole of Kashmir ( even excluding Ladakh) in 1948 Kashmir war it would have solved the problem of Kashmir once for all. As Pakistan was unable to achieve it's military objective due to irregular and disorganized Pathans volunteers (valiant fighters no doubt) fighting against a superior enemy (British trained, battle hardened( world war 2 veterans) highly disciplined Indian Army.
