On-Armature Bust Part 15: Finishing & Final Detailing
In part fifteen of my 15-part on-armature bust tutorial series, I cover the nuances of detail and surface finish, explaining how to emphasize the most important focal points through formal contrast, and considering a variety of both stylized and realistic surfacing options.
I want to reiterate that the methods I’ve outlined in this series are not even remotely the only way to go about sculpting a bust. Nor would I claim they are unequivocally the best way. They are an approach designed to provide, as quickly and unambiguously as possible, a basic understanding of both the anatomical structures of the face and some of the most important figure sculpting principles. My hope is that this series will serve as a strong foundation from which you can continue to develop your anatomical knowledge, your sculpting skills, and your own personal style.

The path is so clearly charted in this series that I can’t help but believe that it will eventually gain much wider attention. These videos represent a solid contribution to the subject. Thank you so much for making them available at no cost. Fantastic

You’re very welcome! I originally made these videos for my students (handy for remote teaching), but I figured as long as I have them, why not put them out there in case anyone was interested. I’m glad you liked them and thank you for watching!

Your channel has been extremely helpful! Thank you. Would you be open to doing a mold casting series, what materials to use for beginners and what to do? -- Thank you!

I'm so glad to hear it! I do use slip-casting in my own practice and intend to make some instructional videos on it eventually (was that the kind of casting you were thinking of?). I'm not sure when I'll be able to get to it, though, as I have lots of things lined up in the coming months (one thing gets in the way of another, you know).

@@intheround8310 yes, no problem!! I totally understand. I don’t know anything about casting, so I wouldn’t know. Hopefully something that allows me to do a resin sculpture from the mold? But I’ll welcome any type of casting teachings honestly. - Thank you for all the time and effort you put into those videos!

@@LuciaInman For resin you would probably be using a soft mold - urethane or, better yet, silicone. This is in some ways easier than slip-casting, which requires a rigid plaster mold, and in some ways harder (and it's definitely more expensive). I'll probably not be doing any videos on this in the near future, but there are many instructional and demo videos here on KZbin, or you could check out Smooth-on's tutorial videos: www.smooth-on.com/tutorials/

This is just a generic mid-fire stoneware. You can get a version of it at most art supply stores or you can order it online.
