Just say no, pray and run from the thought. Distract yourself and be busy doing holy things. Stay in shallow waters so you won't get drowned. Say yes to God, to holy thoughts and actions. We only have 24h hours per day. 8 hours sleep, 8 hours work, 2 hours travel, 1 hours personal hygiene, 5 hours left. 30 minute morning prayer, 15 minute night prayer, 15 minute rosary, 10 minute divine mercy Chaplet, 30 minute mass. 20 minute kind conversations to loved ones. 3 hours left. 1 hour relaxation, 1 hour total meal, 1 hour house chores. Zero time left. So, bad thoughts have no place in our time. Don't be idle. Be responsible.

I have 2 questions. 1. What does it mean to consent to a bad thought? To simply think about it more? To agree with the bad thought, like “actually I might do that” or “that’s not that bad” -is this what consent to a bad thought is? 2. How do you reject a bad thought? If I say “don’t think about a purple elephant” naturally, the first thing that pops in your head is a purple elephant. It seems like the harder you try not to think about it, the more you think about it. Obviously I would think prayer would be something to do, but is there anything else I’m missing on how to do this? Especially, the ability to do this instantly? Sorry if these seem like foolish questions. I am trying to wrap my head around this.

Say thoughts of attraction about a married coworker tempt you. You can't help how you physically react to a beautiful woman/ handsome man. You can and must avoid near occassion of sin by averting your eyes, guarding your heart, not dwelling on ways the marriage can can end so you can be with that person, etc. I found myself as a wife deployed and working with handsome married men. Not a problem until one man in particular, I could not help feeling attracted to, nor avoid him due to the work we did. I was very disturbed by the conflict between my will and my thoughts. Thankfully we had the sacraments. My priest advised against attempting to avoid him as it was not really possible given our work, and may increase the temptation all the more. Rather I was to reject the thoughts when temptation arose (I prayed St Benedict's prayer) and then immediately begin praying for that man, his wife and the success of their marriage, as well as my own. I never said so many Hail Marys and rosaries in my life! And it worked! God's grace was enough! 🕇🙏

As someone who suffers from Sudden Intrusive Thought syndrome (yes, it's a thing), I struggle greatly with bad thoughts randomly popping into my head (nevermind seeing an attractive woman). Some of the best advice I ever received was in confession. The priest told me to turn something bad into something good by offering those thoughts up to the souls in purgatory whenever they happen. If the thoughts are diabolical in nature, it infuriates the evil one and turns his power back on him. If the thoughts are psychological in nature, it is merely a cross to bear and to use to serve others. In short, when you identify a "bad" thought, simply stop it in its tracks and offer it up, either in thought or word. It definitely helps.

Consent is in letting it continue. Changing what you are doing is one way to resist it. It’s like redirecting a child to something more productive when they act up. Prayer is also necessary for strong temptations. I think an important distinction is is recognizing that the thought and feeling is not yet sin in itself. It’s when you indulge the thought and feeling to get something out of it, that you are consenting. Confessing these lapses helps to form the habit of stopping them quicker next time and gaining confidence in your own strength of will and God’s Grace. Of course it’s His grace which makes your will strong but you have to exercise that will to say no.

Doesn't that story the Priest told about the damned man seem unjust to anyone else? The idea that after a good confession and subsequent rejection of two temptations the God damned him forever after falling to just one sin seems...ridiculous. Isn't Purgatory supposed to be the place where such bad habits may be cured from those unfortunate enough to still be enslaved to some extent on the event of their death? I'm not trying to cast doubt or start an argument, I'm sincerely bothered by this story. How do we know it's true?

God reveals to His Saints as we know. Many have come back to reveal in order to be an example. There was a nun who had a soul share how she ended up in hell and she went to church prayed the rosary. But her problem was she did it only to be seen and preferred the materialism in life even went to confession but again did so not because she loved but to be seen. If you want I can send the video of that dialogue it's very insightful to examine our inward heart and intentions.

@Jimmy Kneebone Sure it's unreasonable to expect that no matter what you do you'll always be offered a chance to return back to the Lord, however it seems to me as though what was described in the video wasn't like that at all. Why not accept the two conquered temptations and then let the man die, especially when God KNEW that he would fall to the third? The whole story sounds like something that was invented to scare people, which doesn't work at least not in the long term. I do pray my Rosary every day, but faith does not mean blindly swallowing every story I hear.

I'm having a hard time understanding this: "it is always dangerous to look at young persons elegantly dressed and to look at them purposely and without a just cause; it is at least a venial sin". I get there's potential for bad thoughts, but the potential for bad thoughts is also there even in casual clothing. To be fair, some clothing is more provocative than others, but you seem to be putting people who dress elegantly on the same level of alert as those who dress immodestly. Can we not admire the beauty of another person without fear of having bad thoughts? Didn't young people back then meet at their local church where everyone was their best dressed? How were they supposed to begin courting? I think what would really help is knowing the distinctions between dressing elegantly, modestly, and immodestly. If I'm missing something here, someone please tell me; I'm not trying to rationalize.

Yestarday my owner told me that he will come with a customer to buy the flat i live in rent. I was a little panicked I thouth at worst scenarios (not impure thoughts) but worries how would be the new owner, will increase the price of rent? Will come every week in the flat without my knowledge and consent? All those kind of things. But after short time my conscience told me: This is the faith that you have in God? When things are getting out of your control this how you treat Him? It s easy to pray daily ,to go to Sundays Mass ,but when things change a liitle bit, this is how you react? After that I felt really sorry for my thoughts and the possible customer is a nice guy actually, respectful and well educated. Did I really commit a sin of not having faith in God? If yes how should i confess it? Please help me. Thank . God bless you.

Thank you for sharing that I relate and thank you for speaking how we ought to see difficult scenarios. That we ought to have faith and not distrust Gods plan. It's not a sin against faith in your thoughts since your conscience spoke up the truth you didn't consent afterwards to continue thinking this way. If anything it was rash judgement it sounds like but ask your confessor your better to explain in it's full scenario and let Jesus help you in that beautiful space of mercy. God bless you.

Is this a homily or a booklet being read? I was just curious of the context. This should be viewed/heard with caution and under the advice of a Spiritual Director because if someone has a tendency toward scrupulosity this could really lead to despair. Were women in the workplace when it was written? How can a man “not even gaze upon a well dressed woman” in these days? Unless you live in a monastery how is that possible? If a man has to walk around with his eyes on the floor to avoid even looking at a woman in his place of employment-I can promise you in our hostile world he won’t be employed long. I totally get and embrace the HEART of this sermon/book but it needs further direction. I am not a feminist...I’m a full-time wife and mother, homeschooler, traditionalist....so don’t throw those rocks at me. If you sincerely care about spiritual growth in genuineness holiness you will GET what Im saying.

It's not impossible for a man to look away I myself do not look at men at all even if he were the most attractive I don't ever do so because it defiles your thoughts. Men are weaker in this area so if I'm a woman that takes care to not gaze at anyone yes it's harder for a man but not impossible. Infact his workplace would respect him more because he would be the first man to not look at a woman lustfully or with delight but with purity and respect for his God and his vocation and state in life. I understand scrupulously going over every deed I used to chastise myself all night. However, purification is necessary for a soul God won't allow harm to a sensitive soul in as far as she is capable look at St. Therese of Liseux or St. Ignacious of Loyola God willed them to suffer scruples in order to show He is God and will remove when He sees fit the soul that endures patiently with scruples and with prayer and frequenting the Sacraments will be blessed.
