On Body and Soul: Portrayal of Loneliness Analysis

A brief video essay about the portrayal of loneliness in On Body and Soul (2017) directed by Ildikó Enyedi. This was a comeback film for Enyedi after an 18 year hiatus. On Body and Soul won the Golden Bear in the the main competition section of the 67th Berlin International Film Festival. It was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 2017.
The film is about two lonely slaughterhouse workers, Endre and Mária, who discover they share the same dreams. At night, they meet in a winter forest as deer and fall in love. With this spiritual connection, Endre and Mária try to overcome their insecurities and isolation so in order to love each other in real life.

This film resonated with me when I first saw it years ago as I'm pretty sure I'm autistic myself and recognized the feelings of awkwardness, despair and loneliness throughout the movie all too well. That feeling of wanting to connect and socialize like normal people yet being unable to was all too familiar. Even the scenes of her going over in her mind and practicing conversation with the toys struck a chord too. The guy could functionally pretty normally but the girl suffered the most. Was happy to see they ended up together in the end though.

People should pay to watch such good video essays. Your smoothing voice made it even more interesting. Your interpretation and analysis is noteworthy and must reach larger audience. Wish to see more suvh interesting stuff from your side. Did you study film semiotics?
