Just starting out with family portraits for my church. Looks like I have a LOT of things to consider not only about the family but the location as well. Thank you for the insightful approach.

I just did family pictures yesterday, it was exhausting because you're right about that you had to move quickly and fun at the same time.

What is a "white over silver" reflector? Is the assistant holding two reflectors? i.e. a silver behind a white scrim? So not too much of the flash is lost?

Don't you think the bounced light is a bit harsh? Probably we are viewing this in Srgb format, I am getting that feel or the apple screen is giving that impression. I am sure the original pic must be looking much better.😊

Pye, thanks for all the great tips. Would a 70-200 lens put you too far away for the flash in this situation? Thanks, Mark
@Dewabarasunderan
@Dewabarasunderan Жыл бұрын
At 200 for sure, at 70 not so much. But the further the reflector moves back, the lesser light you’ll have and the harsher the light will look.

Wow I loved this content.I have a doubt, what if we use 85mm or135mm lens, I mean the subject will be far and the reflector cannot bounce back to subject face as illustrated here! In that case only strobe is the only way to go or is there any other options? Pls reply
@bluetsunami
@bluetsunami 3 жыл бұрын
Could probably still bounce it by removing it and triggering it in the same setup but the photographer at a further distance. You’d have to prop the speed light though. Using a strobe sounds like it would be far simpler when working at a distance.

For a larger group, say 10+, would you be able to use this technique? You would have to move away quite a bit from the group and the flash would be losing so much of its power? Have you ever tried this with a speedlight or would you switch to a stronger flash? Thank you.
@slrlounge
@slrlounge 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Isabelle! For a group of that size I think it's best to use an off-camera flash with am umbrella. A speedlight is more than enough if your lighting conditions are right (shaded area, less ambient light), however, if you are shooting in mid-day sun then we suggest using a strobe with higher power. We have an entire course dedicated to group portrait photography: www.slrloungeworkshops.com/offers/zjXK2ak2

They're shooting at 50mm, its wide enough that i think f2 would work as long as their faces are relatively in line

You'd be surprised how distance affects your DOF. Considering how much space he has around the family using a 50mm, I would say he is far enough to keep their face in focus. Try it out.
@Scorehound
@Scorehound 7 жыл бұрын
All of their faces are within the focal plane. As long as all of the faces of your subjects are in the same line (focal plane), they should all be in focus.

These are ok, but it's obvious a flash was used. Just watch Julia Trotti's videos on natural light photography, or shooting under harsh sunlight. The results are way better than this.
@jasonbodden8816
@jasonbodden8816 5 жыл бұрын
There's more than one style of photos, though. If you don't like it, that's fine. It doesn't mean that flash was used poorly. It just means you like a more natural look. Besides, he already said in the video that it's a stylistic choice that's totally up to you.
