Terrific tutorial, Jay P! My son is taking his first photo class in college and will be starting lighting next week. 'Definitely sharing this video with him.

Hi - give your son 2or 3 led torches to the class…. So he can see how the shadows work….

I paid for a video lesson via PayPal but did not receive the download except for the receipt. Wrote to the email address provided but got a standard reply to check the junk folder. Same answer despite 2 emails for assistance. This video lesson is great though!

Can one use a speedlight off camera, without a light modifyer though? At least for portraits. Just camera, trigger and flash. I've seen some umbrellas online and such, but I dont know if it's a must. My trigger arrives tomorrow, so I guess I'll test the whole 'raw' approach in upcoming days haha. Love your vids!

Great instructional video. Have you done a video on using high speed synch? I like the longer lens because you can get sharp photos with nice bokah. But the longer lens is too heavy for me to walkaround with so I will have to stick to my 85mm prime and use my feet to zoom.

Great video, due you use a CTO filter for a little warmth in the images?
@k1k1300410 ай бұрын
he really needs this gels, I think.

I did not use the CTO on this shoot.

This is a very helpful video. Any tips for shooting an outdoor event, so the flash (a fill light) will be on the camera. And it will be fast, can't ask the subjects to pose or wait for you? Thanks!

That is a good concept. We will see what we can do!

9:40 Color gels for your flash would have been your friend there. That cool blue tint in her face in contrast to the warm (sun) rimlight doesn't look very flattering ...

Well explained. many thanks. However, you can see the difference in the white balance. When the sun is closer to the horizon, it gets warmer, while the flash is just white 5600k or something very close. A flash that allows to go around 6000k is definitely a good idea because its harder to tell that was done with a flash. Still looks very nice

Besides the sun, what do you use for a back light?

What is the stand that the flash is mounted on?

It is a Manfrotto Alu Master Air-Cushion Stand. We have a set of 3 that stack together: bhpho.to/3qr37XI

Many good points. However, I can't help feeling that if the background light is coming from right to left fore example, then the strobe should also be coming from the same direction. If not, the lighting in the image looks weird. Am I the ONLY person who feels that way ?

@@TheSlantedLens no just seems very time consuming considering when you have faster methods like the s-brackets or the magnetic mounts on the angler/profoto/smdv softboxes. But hey I get it, this video brought to you by Westcott.
