In 1976, I was a 16-year-old bass singer in a West Coast quartet, and I helped promoter Polly Grimes with some concerts in Oakland. That's when I met James, Cecil, Pat, Jimmy, and spent a lot of time with Ken Turner picking his brain about bass singing. We were talking about head-tones, what I later learned was called a vocal fry. Ken told me, "If you get a good head-tone you can roll all the way down to the bottom of the piano." "That's how it's done?" I replied. "That's how it's done," he confrmed. It was a bass singing Master passing this secret to an apprentice. Thank you, Big Ken.

I know every facial expression! Every movement. Every word. I watched and heard them do this hundreds of times. As his child, I know how his Hugs feels with him wearing that suit, how he smells, the veins in his hands, the shrug of his shoulders (same as Uncle James). What really gets me is that smile. This is 40 years old now, how is that possible!?

Great video. All of these singers were very good. Ken Turner could do some amazing things with his voice, and was always dead on with the pitch. He could imitate a trumpet, and sound just like the real thing, on key and everything. I think I remember him imitating a trombone, also.

I've heard a lot of tenors in my day, as a singer and a preachers daughter who was in it for many years, and for a quartet tenor, Mr. Cox was top notch! I saw somewhere on the Internet, that he died young. If so, how? I'm sure he's singing for Jesus right now! I can't wait to get to Heaven and sing with him! Is he on many albums?

Correction: the tenor in this video is John Cox. The late Pat Hoffmaster was a great tenor also. Mr. Hoffmaster usually had a moustache. He is seen in some of the other Bibletone videos such as "The Old Country Church".
