It is not that we don't smile. We don't smile AT STRANGERS. No, we are not grumpy or unhappy. No, it's not about big or small cities. And certainly not about ”genetics” haha. It is about culture. As you probably already know by now, Russians are all about sincerity. And smiles in Russia always only mean ”I am having fun” or ”I like you", they never mean "I am being polite”. We express politeness differently. And western type sales person smiles, or as we call that дежурная улыбка, are not well regarded here and come off to us as fake pretty much.
@Ри.т8 ай бұрын
This comment of someone under some other video about this topic probably explains it better: ”Smiles don’t equate to politeness in Russian culture. Instead, the “forced” smile that westerners use to seem friendly is translated as a “duty smile.” It’s thought of as a bad characteristic because it suggests insincerity and hiding of genuine emotions. It's viewed as an artificial mask to hide indifference. Russians smile authentically, and it’s a sign of sympathy. Smiles aren’t used as a politeness tool. It makes sense then that Russians don’t smile at people they don’t know. Smiles are reserved for friends and family, and customer service representatives aren’t expected to smile at customers-they don’t know them! However, if a customer service rep knows a regular customer, you can expect to see a smile. Russian smile is intended to be only sincere, it is regarded as a sincere expression of good mood or sympathy to the other party. So, if a foreigner smiled at you - it does not mean anything, he was taught to smile at everyone, and if a Russian smiled, it was because he really wanted it. You can trust that a smiling Russian is genuine, and not just acting out polite traits.”
@МашаВеретейникова8 ай бұрын
It is not true. We also have a smile, which means politeness. In everyday life, I see smiling sellers and people, and this does not mean expressing sympathy for me. A smile and inner light are the most correct human condition. All people are like that. We Russians have always been open and smiling in our culture.

Stereotypes about any country have a very strong influence on human consciousness. You can believe stupid stereotypes in childhood and adolescence. The same applies to the negative portrayal of countries in films. When I was a kid, I accidentally saw the horror movie "Hostel". I didn't watch it to the end, but I remembered that the action took place in Eastern Europe. For several years, I associated the countries of Eastern Europe with devastation, slums, lawlessness and maniacs. As I grew up, I realized that this was not the case. And now how many adults and elderly people still believe stupid stereotypes. They have the internet, but they can't do their research. Some people think that communism is still in Russia!

Но у нас любой ребенок знает, что американцы не носятся на лошадях с кольтами в руках, все знают, что есть южные штаты, где тепло и есть северные, в которых тоже зимой идет снег. Apart from politicians, Hollywood is a lot to be blamed about most of the negative stereotypes that exist in the west about Russians. In movies from the 70s - 80s - early 90s ALL Russians were depicted as bad, stupid, evil, drunk, dangerous etc. etc. etc Many generations of westerners were raised to take these stereotypes for granted.

In Yaroslavl we have lots of bears in the street XD (monuments,coat of arms and other art elements). As for drunk people - there is a law which prohibits drinking in public places (including the streets) + a law which prohibits to sell alcohol after 23:00 contributed a lot. (I could see a lot of drunk people when I was younger though). There are still people who are not afraid to drink outside in open view occasionally but maybe not in a crowded street (like sometimes I see them on the bench outside of my house, but they have a risk that people inside the house can call police).

There are many stereotypes for any country. Most of them are ridiculous and can be fun. Most Americans don’t run around with blazing guns. There are no high noon duels on the streets. There are many US citizens who don’t own guns me included. Most Americans don’t smile non stop and sure they aren’t always happy. Many US people don’t eat fast food everyday and many look for a kind of healthy diet. There are many food options in the US fast food is only one part. Not everything in the US is as big as in Texas. You will see drunk people in any country to around bars or certain events. Most people in any given country are remarkably similar. They want to live their life’s comfortably. They need to go to work after that they are tired. Most people have to work in a job which isn’t exactly their dream job. They all have to get groceries and need some abode to live in. In any country there are beautiful women and many are just ordinary as it is with males.

And probably in Russia there are also stereotypes about the West, but your activity will help us all prevent evil forces from unleashing wars and enmity.
