On Prayer - St. Ignatius Brianchaninov

“The path to God is prayer…. What air is for the life of the body, the Holy Spirit is for the life of the soul. By means of prayer, the soul breathes this sacred, mystical air.”
In this excerpt from St. Ignatius’ essay “On Prayer” we catch a glimpse into the man’s inspired experience of communion with God. He calls us to recognize a deeper, more humble approach to God, our King and Master. He helps us remember the goodness of God even when our prayers are not answered as we desire. Our Christ is the One above all, Who has lowered Himself to our lowly state. May these brief words on prayer help us ascend to the One Who seeks those to worship Him in spirit and in truth.

I was looking through some selections and found this, and I am finally understanding why God doesn't want to answer my prayers and why he tells me no. it still hurts why I see that others get theirs I know that it may not be from him but still, it hurts I'm been turned down just about every time by my the one who birthed me, unless it benefitted her, and now by others, I'm still learning the understanding of the serenity prayer.

@@cornbreadfedkirkpatrick9647 yes, the Serenity Prayer is so helpful. I have used it for years in recovery from addiction in 12 step program. Serenity to accept the things I cannot change, very hard! I don’t always feel God, but if I hang on, and pray and try to stay living one day at a time, I suddenly feel connected. Sounds as if you have had some trauma, I will be thinking of you and praying for you. Stay connected to good people. Xx

I still have to say that prayer, as I’m currently struggling to clear up another thing! Not totally free! It’s a journey of learning to submit I guess! I appreciate your comments and love the fact that people all over the world can watch the same clip and get wisdom from it. Wish you a good day. X

If we shouldn’t ask God for anything during prayer, what can we pray about? I’m not talking about worldly things, but asking for humility, etc. We ask for forgiveness of our sins, of course.

Does St. Ignatius say that? Please share the quote as I can’t recall. But certainly, pray for God’s will to be done, which includes your salvation and all the good things bound up with your salvation and the salvation of others.

@@OrthodoxWisdom I thought I heard you say we should not ask of anything in prayer as God knows what we need. I agree with this, of course. Forgive me if I’m mistaken of what you said. It’s just hard for me not to ask God for humility because I know my heart is hard.

Whatever I said in this video are the words of St. Ignatius. Maybe listen again and look for other teachings of the Saints on prayer. I am very confident God hears and delights to hear his children ask for humility.

St Ignatius says that God does not need our prayers - not that we shouldn't ask anything from Him. But even if we were not to ask anything from Him, there would still remain thanksgiving and praising, and living before the face of God in unity with Him.
