So I've watched most of the video from this series, but want I've missed somewhat is choosing between the different categories of cars - I get crawlers versus monster trucks, but what makes a Short Course Truck different from a Truggy different from a Dirt Buggy, etc.? And what factors would one consider in deciding which of those to select? Thanks for a lot of great material for the newbie!

i got a mix for myself. both on road and offroad on one there are 2 excellent cars for it #1: Buggy #2: Short course truck which is the one i have.

As a beginner could you explain choosing tires for different surfaces and applications? So many options. Seems like every brand has their own color system too.

Depends on what type of circuit you are driving on for the on road, also depends on how long you want the tyres to last. For example if you are racing on a high speed and quick corner circuit with very little straits then use softer tyres because they offer a lot more grip but wear out a lot faster

It is amazing to me how much this channel shows off the 1/8th scale buggy, but never recommends it to a beginner. 8th scale pan chassis buggies are some of the simplest and most well engineered R/C cars in existence today. They are like the shark of the oceans. They haven't changed much in millions of years because they are perfect. An 8th scale buggy is the unholy marriage of an F1 car and a Tank. It is literally the perfect basher. It can go over any terrain. If you somehow find an obstacle it can't climb over, it will go through it, often violently. When you try to jump them off a ramp, they don't jump, the earth just squats down for them. Drive them straight up a tree and they can convince gravity its been pulling in the wrong direction this whole time.

I am a bit sour about my local hobby shop. The first time I went in there, I did ask questions. I had been wanting to get into the hobby for a very long time (researching on and off for over 12 years). I told the employee that I wanted to race. He suggest I get a Redcat monster truck (not pro, so brushed). It outright sucked. It wasn't what I wanted. I took it back after the *very first* run. The owner of the store refused to give me what I paid for the truck. I didn't even want cash. After more conversation with him I eventually traded up to an Associated SC10 2wd brushless truck. That truck was probably the most expensive off-road racing truck in the store. I lost out on $50 I had spent on the silly Redcat. :(

Oh, and on top of all that, I bought *both* trucks open box. So the owner's argument about not being able to sell a "used" truck is null and void in my opinion.

99codemister some RC shop owers are just jerks, not sure why but RC shops in particular seem to have an issue with that. I started in the hobby 25 years ago, I had cheap big box store Tyco RC cara before but when I was 12 I bought a Traxxas Hawk 2, it was great until I found a bunch of motors at a garage sale, I had no idea I couldn't just plug in any motor I wanted into the ESC, needless to say I burned up the speed control. When I look it to the shop the guy yelled at me, he was throwing stuff, finally my Dad grabbed him and put him in his place. He did replace the speed control, not sure if he was just scared of my Dad or what he said to him, but he made sure I knew if I burned up this one he wouldn't replace it. Don't let a shop owner talk you into something you don't want, but you also want to pay attention. to the kinds of parts they stock and ask what they sell allot of and stock parts for. I like Losi stuff but the shop near me doesn't sell Losi so I either have to have them order it, buy it online, or go with something they do stock. Unfortunately there are no Tracks near me anymore, so I dot have any RC cars, bashing is fine, but I enjoy the competition of racing.

I think buggy type are the best as first cars. I got a buggy as a first car too and its probably the best choice. Its not as offroad as crawler or monster truck so u have a lot of speed too but also its not on road so you can do pretty much all the offroad stuff. Yeah i plan on getting a on road too but because of drifting. If i was choosing my only car forever i would probably choose buggy, or something similar like truggy or mayyyyebe short course. Good video. :)

I'm 100% on road these days and only at the track... BUT... I think the best RC vehicle when you get started is a RTR electric off road... Relatively cheap, nothing to build, don't have to set up electronics, just charge a battery and run on almost any surface... If you catch " The Bug " then the rabbit hole goes deep :) Its a "spending" hobby if you let it... But the best hobby in the world...

you mentioned i can drive offroad car on grass. everywhere i read it says i will fry the motor if i do that. but i can't work out if they mean i will fry the motor only if it is really LONG grass? i mean is it ok to drive on short cut grass, such as a football field or the like? (i have 1/10 brushless short course truck). do u have any thoughts on that?

Your 1/10 works pretty much everywhere . It does not really matter if you run it through grass. I run my buggy through grass for more than 3 years so I don’t think yours is going to have a problem.

These are great videos, but as much as people resist, the best first car is a basic Tamiya kit. From there they will build the skills required to service modern RC cars, and truly enjoy them.Still, it's a hard sell these days. People don't understand the joy of the build. NOT and SCX10 as a first build, but a Hornet or Frog or Lunchbox. And they are cheaper than they were in the 80's. People who have to bring cars into the shop for repair are not going to be long lasting in the hobby.

Tamiya had and has its place in RC. If you want an ultra realistic car with a life-like livery? Tamiya. But when it comes to functionality? The base Tamiya kits are built from he cheapest crap imaginable. The screws are the worst metal, the plastic brittle, and the running hardware a joke because its the same stuff you could get in the 80's. Everything is an option part, and so expensive. I have a Bearhawk, and a F201 F1 car. The F201 could have been so freaking amazing if it actually had the materials to backup its design. The fact that they fit such a crazy AWD setup in sight a tight space was epic and I loved it. But when it comes to modern RC? The fit, finish, engineering, and materials that go into Associated, Kyosho, Losi...etc are light years better than Tamiya. Even the off-brand stuff is better.

At least Tamiya knows that you don't put machine screws into plastic directly - you use a self tapper for that. Unlike many of the big players...

Zexify Gaming it does not break or anything you can just drive on normal roads :) but in my opinion you should get an off road car first
