I've always get thrilled by French Cinema: simple, minimal -and at the same time- deep enough to greatly impress you, excite your feelings and stick in your mind for a long time. A combination that the commercial cinema (esp. Hollywood) seriously lacks today. ... And all the above ideas can well be seen in this wonderful short! Great! :)

I love this short film. Memorable. Ever since I first watched it on the big screen so many years ago, as part of the Valentine-themed Futureshorts program.
And when you realize he's giving her acting tips based on something that just happened (reality), it makes it even more so.

THAT is the potential of a true actor/actress. Nice and short. Great work.
@ftwsalio14 жыл бұрын
I feel like this short is much bigger then most of you initially believe...I mean, that woman comes in with her script and makes him recite it multiple times. While she is practising to try to emulate real life, he is literally practising for real life. In this way, we, like them, are always preparing for life. If she hadn't shown up, he would be sitting there thinking about the situation in his head repeating the same lines she just gave him, she's a representation of his internal thoughts...

A great idea and performed to perfection by the actors, c'est tout simplement genial!! bravo!
@Bushelz13 жыл бұрын
The best part is that he now knows what to say after that. He was looking down in his hands and I felt like he was unsure, but after reciting those lines with that girl, he knows exactly how it's supposed to go. It's so often in life we're not sure of what our next line is, but it landed right into his lap.

I come back to this time and time again over the years and it never fails to hit me in the feels. My take from it is that the words in the script were actually said by Paul's girlfriend before she went to the bathroom. But she said them in a hard way, hence why Paul asked the actress to smile whilst she said them.
@SteveSalisbury Жыл бұрын
I've came back to this after having been going through my FB posts. Posted this in 2018 with 1 Like! Immediately I watched it again and still gave me the chills. I absolutely agree that the "script" was already "acted out" between Paul and the ex-gf, which is 100% why he said "try it smiling"; a ridiculous ask for how you would assume this to have naturally been delivered, but it's so powerful. A smile mixed with sadness, and the actress, seemilngly can't understand why it is so emotionally empowering to deliver it that way. Anyway, can't describe effectively how this makes me feel. Hopefully this pings you a notification and gets you to re-live it again. Been 5ish years for me and still makes my hairs stand up. Not really sure why its got comparatively so few views by this point.
@jdonnelly1977 Жыл бұрын
I completely agree with you, but I think Paul's girlfriend said it exactly the way he suggested the actress try it because he knew it was more hurtful and real that way.

To the person below, it's "Je ne t'aime plus." Plus replaces pas when used in this context. Like, jamais or rien. Kind of like the principal of double negatives in English. You could say, for example "Je n'ai dit rien" but not "Je n'ai dit pas rien" some also leave out the pas when doing this (J'ai dit rien) but in proper French, it should be used.
@tyhendershot10956 жыл бұрын
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe you would want to say "Je n'ai rien dit". The negation goes around the first verb if I'm not mistaken.

@mch158 This was beautiful! I didn't understand why "Paul" was so somber the whole time until the end. It was because the girl that came in the last scene was his significant other, and the lines he was rehearsing with the random actress was more-or-less what he had just gone through in real life. That's why he was able to give the actress pointers to make what she was saying more real...

Check it out... basically, the actress crying had nothing to do with anything (i think). It's just that the dude drinking his coffee was basically experiencing the whole script. Read the script and look at what the guy's girl says to him. She says she's going to leave and asks for a kiss. And we all assume that the guy is going to say "No, Get Out." Shazam.
