"Sacrifice" is orthogonal to economics. It's undertaken for its own sake. It's not a question of cost-benefit analysis. It's profoundly pathological, although so ordinary at the same time. But Kahn is unable to recognize the pathological nature of warfare, so committed himself to "normalizing" the symbolic order.
