This has got to be my favorite video so far. Being a part of the whole process in the Discord may have something to do with it but also, the pure joy, love of guitars, and the effort you put in to make these guitars the best they can be is so evident here. Much love.

Amazing to think it was so close to being playable for probably many, many years. It's hard to imagine anyone would have left a '65 Strat like that.

I wish I remembered this video after I installed a black bobbin 920d wire harness, it was shorting out against my shielding paint and I ended up just cutting a thin slice of pickup foam and sticking it there and it solved it

I own the exact same guitar. Bought from a shop in Portland Oregon. It plays so well. While I was waiting for the guitar to come home, someone near where I live was selling a later 1965 that was owned by his father. Didn’t think of owning 2 Jazzmaster, but the guitar was mint and came with an mint and original 1968 Twin reverb. So...I am now the proud owner of 2 1965 JM. They are my favorite guitars (with my Warren Haynes 335 reissue).

I sprang for an AVRI '62 last week. It's far more than I would ever comfortably spend on impulse, but far less than I have ever been able to find one for. It already had a Mastery in it and it was in the colour I've always wanted (black, red tort). I'm in love. Matt made the right decision. He would've for sure regretted not getting his new JM.

You should make your own Jazzmaster and sell it, I’d buy it if not so expensive, I’d prefer the Jazzmaster you made than a fender custom shop one. You are probably the master of Jazzmaster on the earth.

I love checking out the restorations you do on vintage guitars! But one thing I can't fathom when it comes to guitar repair... why not replace all of the old wiring? I'm an electrical engineer and I see no reason to keep old wire around. Why not replace it since it's cheap?
@Puisheen
@Puisheen 3 жыл бұрын
Well, it all works so there's no point. Most of it is intact and doesn't need it. Originality is also a factor, so keeping as much of the original harness as possible is always best practice.

You mention tricks to stretch a shrunken vintage pick guard. Could you maybe go over that in a future video where you encounter that issue? I’ve got a ‘62 jm with a beautiful guard that is pulling the screws inward.
@Puisheen
@Puisheen 3 жыл бұрын
I'm debating on that. Most of the tricks I use require a ton of supervision, and being that old celluloid is super flammable I don't want to go around recommending things that could ignite them!

You mention old pickups had waxed wire... does that serve any purpose? I noticed when I bought some stock Fender pickups for my jazz bass, that the wires were waxy, but it's the only pickups I've ever had that are waxed. Secondary note, I wish you were located in Montreal so I could bring some of mine over for a real setup... difficult to get offsets setup here. I once had a tech complain to me about "hipsters and their Jags/Jazzmasters" and how they were "horribly designed". Needless to say I never went back to him.
@ShoreyJr
@ShoreyJr 3 жыл бұрын
Tell me about it. There's a guy in my city in the UK that set up my Jag, I asked him about raising the bridge and neck shims and whatnot, and his response was "nah, don't need em, they're just overengineered pieces of crap". "They got it right with the Strat" my arse.
@raynefaded
@raynefaded 3 жыл бұрын
@@ShoreyJr I've found that it's people who don't understand the engineering of it that complain about it. They don't get the electronics, or the neck angle, or the bridge, or the vibrato... but they look at it from the standpoint of a telecaster or a strat.

Sadly, a lot of techs everywhere treat every Gibson, superstrat and Fender the same and don't know the specifics of setting up offsets. On the plus side though, it kinda forced me to figure out how to do my own basic setting up. Mike's been crucial for this!

Do you know how the fret size varied from late 50’s to mid 60’s ? vintage tall, narrow etc.. The Fender Customshop JM’s use “tall narrow” (6105) for its ‘59, 62 and 65 and sometimes “vintage tall” for their ‘65’s. Are these the same thing and are these fret specs historically accurate ?
@Puisheen
@Puisheen Жыл бұрын
Neither of those current wires are quite 'vintage correct' not that it matters all that much. We're talking thousandths of an inch really, but I'm usually good with most wires referred to as "vintage tall" and the Stew Mac 148 continues to be my favorite size on my own guitars. There's a really good chart floating around that shows the minute differences, but I'm struggling to track it down now

There's a point where you need to stop fuckin with things until they stop working. Your like " yea this works....but...I don't like it. Let me mess with it until it stops working,than I can justify messing with it more, than go to the next thing,and even tho it works,it's not new like the last part in the chain, so let me resolder that than mess with the switch until it stops working, so I can replace it" 🤣 One of my friends is notorious for this.he doesn't know when to leave stuff be

Still at seven minutes in, I still dont see a black wire attached to the jack. I only see white. Or, does the shied backing of the pickguard eliminate the need? The color of the new nut is glorious. Very meaty forearms, indeed.
