Originally composed as a tribute to the steamer Eastland ( • The Full Story of the ... ) in 1911 by S.J. Monck. The Eastland was a Great Lakes pleasure steamer, plagued with problems and dangerously top-heavy. In 1915, the ship rolled onto her side on the Chicago River at her wharf killing 844 people.
Sheet music from my own collection and describes the ship during happier days. Arranged and recorded by my friends Tess and J. Kent Layton for my documentary "The Full Story of the Eastland Disaster (1915)". Animations were also produced for the documentary, animated by Alex Moeller in Unreal Engine 5. This recording is copyright HFX Studios and cannot be re-used without permission.

(Incomplete) Lyrics: Ahoy! For the breeze off Lake Erie’s smooth seas, and a steamer grand, On a fine glassy floor, far away out from shore, on the boat Eastland Free from worry and care as the gulls in the air, as we glide to the music of melody rare We applaud each refrain, make them play it again, on the boat Eastland Hum, dee, hum Hum, dee, ay!

Very beautiful. The music fits perfectly along with the great animations. I hope u do the same thing with the Edmund Fitzgerald and play gordon lightfoots song in the back ground, that’d be really cool. This ship kinda reminds me of the ss America the one that sank off of isle royale. Thanks for this masterpiece!

I cannot believe I haven't subscribed on this account yet. It feels so refreshing--I am fascinated with ships and pianos and seeing this ship wobble from side to side as it steams across the ocean is just so beautiful. It shows how humans have the capability to invent these mesmerizing and complex machines. I have to keep rewatching all your videos because I keep forgetting! Every time I watch one and it finishes I just stare blankly into the wall contemplating what I saw. It felt like I was actually there. My eyes glued to the screen. Thank you for these awesome videos. I might learn this song sometime down the road.....

I liked seeing the changes to the ship after subsequent changes in ownership & the fitting of additional to structure....also the photos overlaid, with the actual Eastland name. It's easy to see how exciting that fateful day would have been......

Very nice thank you. Just tossing out some more boats I would love your take on. SS Milwaukee - 338ft car carrier that sank in 1929 in a storm. All hands lost. Root cause is a mystery. SS Cedarville - 588ft freighter that sank in 1965 after a collision in the strains of mackinaw. Fleet mate of the SS Carl D. Bradley PS Keystone State - 288ft Paddle Steamer lost on lake huron in November 1861. All hands lost. Rumors of Gold on the boat. Cheers man, thank you and I love your work. Best, Kevin

Looking at the Eastland, she just looks far too tall, far too thin, far too long, so little draft. She's a ship of beautiful proportions, but she is also somehow terrifying to me.

Even though the Eastland did not have a very splendid career and very tragic event that ended her passenger career. I love her design & style and of other similar ships of these times too. For years I never knew of this ship and it's disaster it was involved in. I just pray and hope to God that all those who were involved in this tragic event are resting in peace and now there stories and the Eastlands have been told and I absolutely love the song for the ship and the piano solo. Every time I listen to it and hear the sound of the seas I can feel like I'm on the ship and think about. It's good times it had before. It's sad ending. Thank you for sharing the history of this marvelous ship and this beautiful song for it too.

In todays throw-away society I was surprised how many times this ship was refitted and reused. Even after sinking it was reused again with all its faults. When it comes to buildings or cars it seems like most people throw away or tear down old ones because new is easier. But I guess not so with ships. At least back then.

I am impressed with the amount of hardwork you put in these videos. Especially the RMS Atlantic videos. I tried hard to visualize that disaster when I read it in Wikipedia and checking in Google maps. But, after watching your videos I am able to understand how it happened exactly. Such an impressive work done by you. Superior than those documentaries. Could you also please make such informative videos on Sultana disaster in river Mississippi, ghost ships SS Valencia and SS Waratha? Empress of Ireland too sunk in St Lawrence River?

Not to be an asshole but I'm fairly sure On the Boat Eastland was composed in 1911. 1913 was the last year the Eastland was on Lake Erie under the Eastland Navigation Company and the lyrics say "ahoy for the breeze of lake Erie smooth seas and a streamer grand." The writer was from Sandusky Ohio I believe and was paid by the company for it. The copyright listings of songs in 1911 has the song written down. I could be wrong though. Sorry if this nitpicking, this ship is a passion of mine. I think its a fun little song and this is a great rendition.
