Today I am talking about the directorial debut from Jerrod Carmichael, On The Count Of Three and why I believe it is a true masterpiece. A film that tackles to themes of mental health while not trying to save the world. What did you think of On The Count Of Three?

I thought the fact that Kevin spent most of the movie protecting Val was beautiful, especially when he brought him to go dirt biking and later pointing the gun at the store clerk because he was ignoring his friend in need. Even in his last moments, he made the decision to sacrifice himself in order to spare Val of jail time. He was a true friend looking out for his boy and it was very heartwarming.

Exactly. Kevin had been suicidal most of his life. But part of the reason he didnt kill himself is that he kept believing that maybe there was a reason to live. Thats why he tells Val to wait a day cause he still believed that maybe he could find that reason. Unfortunately he didnt. Val on the other hand felt he had no reason to live recently. But Kevin even said to Val that hes just going through something and that Val doesnt really want to kill himself. I think its a part of the reason he tells Val to wait a day. Ultimately Val found his reason to live.

As someone who’s always fighting some dumb battle in my brain, Some moments of Kevin’s journey hit not close to home but right on it. I’d say the line or scene that impacted me most (other than the end) is the convenience store one. If I could drill it into someone or anyones brains it would be almost EXACTLY what Kevin said with his whole life of hurt behind his eyes. “When someone is talking, listen bro. It HURTS being ignored.”

Yes. I was recommended this movie by someone who said they saw Kevin in me. It hurt my soul that they took their life weeks later but this movie permeates my being.

Carmichael and abotts chemistry and performances were absolutely incredible. While the script was beautiful, the movie could’ve been a flop if not for the raw and honest performance of each actor. I only knew Abott from “Girls” which I never gave another thought of, but now I’m a fan of his for life. Carmichael as well… the dude is a genius

I just watched this film and what struck me was just how real it felt. The way Val talked to Kevin, who was dealt a tough hand, hit particularly close to home. While I sometimes have a sense of emptiness, it is never extreme enough to elicit anything beyond that. My brother is another case. He’s similar to Kevin in that he was dealt a tough hand. Four years ago I had to call him and convince him not to kill himself, and the tension I felt on that call is the same tension I felt watching some scenes in On the Count of Three. This film exudes the rawness of people who struggle with mental health, as well as those who see no out. In that, it’s importance is established.

I absolutely LOVED this movie the first time that I watched it and the second time was even better. Both times I decided to watch it other people (my mom and friends) and we talked for HOURSSSS on the topic. My favorite part of the movie watching it a second time was where they go to Vals GF's house so he could give her the money. Then Kevin takes the yellow Jeep to kill the guy at the lake. It went over my head, and it seemed insignificant the first time watching it, when Val got turned down with the money trying to find a easy way out, she says, "Stop standing in your own way.". And he is left there to ponder about his future... alone. Cutting to Kevin at the lake, he is there also alone, but thinking about his past trauma, like the doctor and the bully at the lake. To me its the turning point where both characters make the commitment on how they want to proceed with the rest of their life.

Mental health cannot be ended but it can be blurred, the only way to blur or move past the obstacles of mental health are to ask questions about life and to get over your own mind. People never realize you can truly do anything the only obstacle is your own head.

Hey man, I loved this movie and this was a great review. As someone who’s Black, I’ve had my fair share of mental health issues + 1 suicidal urge. Carmichael took a risk being this transparent, especially when mental illness in the Black community is never really talked about. I can see this movie being talked about as years go by. Maybe the world will get to a place to solve the mental health crisis.

I just saw the movie and idk if it's a detail or not but when val and kevin go to the motocross road the first time, val is the one who falls off the bike, I mean it's like they tell us that val really doesn't want that (end his life), that's why kevin just kept going, then in the end kevin falls off showing us that he doesn't want to live anymore unlike val, that's why he kept going, idk

I think the reason the writing and acting were great is because it seemed real and relatable, if you were in a situation like the end scene would you be able to pull an eloquent speech about the value of life out of your ass or would you just keeping yelling "put your fucking gun down"? It's pretty obvious that the "flaws" in the dialogue were an intentional choice.
