The Flåm Railway from Myrdal to Flåm in Norway is one of the world's most spectacular and beautiful railways. It descends from 2,844 feet (866.8 meters) to sea level in less than 20 kilometers (about 13 miles). The Flåm Railway is not a rack-and-pinion railway and it has one of the steepest gradients (averaging 1 in 18) of any regular railway line. Each train has two electric locomotives and six carriages. The locomotives were specially built for the Flåm Railway and each has five separate sets of brakes. They need them!
