After several weeks discussing Scripture, Tradition, and the Magisterium, Matt Swaim and Ken Hensley conclude their discussion of how they wrestled with the question of Christian authority on their way into the Catholic Church.
Infallibility is one of the most misunderstood concepts in all of Catholic teaching, and to both Matt and Ken as Protestants, it sounded completely insane and unbiblical. They share some of the misconceptions they had about what the Catholic Church actually means by infallibility, and how it's not based on the administrative skills and talents of any particular pope or bishop, but on the very promise of Jesus Himself.

This was fun. Had a few laughs. Let's pray for a lot more people to have the courage to swallow their pride and admit that they were wrong.

I meant to add that you seem to be implying that Catholics don't have a "real" relationship with God. I hope you are not including Mother Theresa of Calcutta, St Francis, St Dominic, St Theresa of Lieieux, St Maximillian Kolbe (you must look him up on the internet) St Ignatius of Antioch, ME and millions of other Catholics of not having a real relationship with God. You can't have met many of them......

The idea that, with the last of the Apostles, the sole source of authority is the Bible seems to resonate with something in Sikhism! The last and eternal Guru is the holy text, the Guru Granth Sahib. And, for Christianity of course, one must leave aside such minor issues as the fact that, when the last Apostle died, there was no agreed canon of the New Testament.

@@Kitiwake Actually witch-hunting happened mostly in protestant-puritan areas, think of the Salam witches in US or Pendle witches in England very rarely in Catholic countries

@@Kitiwake That's only my assumption of the word 'someone'. It may or may not be the case. The burning of people who practice witchcraft, hence, called witches, is something that is popularized by movies which is my only basis for this assumption. As far as I know, there is no Catholic law that allows anyone to burn people to death as this contradicts a Commandment. However, let's assume that the Church declared people as witches at some time in the past. It would not be a bishop or such who would sentence a person to be burnt. It would be the citizens of a country who would make that choice. This hypothetical example is similar to what happened to people who were declared by the Church to be propagators of heresies. The Church did not sentence them to death but they were killed based on a country's law back then (somewhere in Europe). The Church may or may not have spoken against that law but I don't have any evidence that suggests that they did or did not.

The Roman Catholic claim of infallibility is obviously wrong. One has only to study Unam Sanctam along with contemporary "developments." Either the Pope was wrong then, or the Vatican 2 Magisterium is wrong today. Either way, the claim of infallibility is, as Ken put it, "pure nonsense." I understand the desire completely to find an infallible Church. I don't know whether that exists, but I know that Roman Catholicism is not and cannot be it. You rightly point out that there is some confusion among various church communities. But it doesn't follow from this that the Roman Catholic Church is infallible. You argue that Jesus' statement to the apostles about binding and loosing implies their infallibility. However, if this is the case, then then the Orthodox Churches are infallible too. Hmm. You argue that the Keys were given only to Peter so that he has this power in a a special way, but the Roman Catholic Church (and early Church fathers) assert that the Keys were given to all of the apostles. Every one of your arguments, though apparently sincere, contain just devastating fallacies. Unfortunately, adding a bunch of fallacies together doesn't magically produce a valid (let alone infallible) argument. There are many wonderful things about Roman Catholicism. It seems to me an error to try to push these fallacious points. People who enter the Roman Catholic Church under the influence of these erroneous ideas are extremely vulnerable.

The true church has infallibility. The snake of the Novus Ordo infiltration does not.

Infallibility, to me, means obedience to the councils and Popes, I don't pretend to be more Catholic than St Pope John 23rd or St Pope John Paul 2nd. I wouldn't have that arrogance.....

Pope Clare the first declared it must be true. How absolutely cruel the Holy Spirit has abandoned Philippines to the snake of the novus ordo because that is the mass most of the Filipinos attended for at least 40 years that I know of. Please do not apply the American politics way to the Catholic church. Trust the Holy Spirit.

Malachi 1:11 (RSVCE): 11 For from the rising of the sun to its setting my name is great among the nations, and in every place incense is offered to my name, and a pure offering; for my name is great among the nations, says the Lord of hosts. The Novus Ordo is the Roman rite widely celebrated around the world in this generation giving a perfect offering in every place as prophecied in Malachi.
