'On the Nature of Love' is an 1896 Tagore composition. It speaks of the lifelong quest for a true soulmate. The importance of this search makes it a lifelong pursuit. Replete with emotions that draw us in, the poet links occurrences in Nature to his relentless search. Through the course of our lives, we encounter many. Life is a journey and countless traverse the course of life seeking the one true 'soulmate' (for what can be more elevated than that). Encounters/trysts with others bear little significance as there is but the one with whom one can share one's soul. The identification of a soulmate would the poet believes leads to endless, heavenly bliss. This search is worth a lifetime as the conjoining of souls brings about absolute peace, satisfaction, and joy.
Full Poem:
The night is black and the forest has no end;
a million people thread it in a million ways.
We have trysts to keep in the darkness, but where
or with whom - of that we are unaware.
But we have this faith - that a lifetime's bliss
will appear any minute, with a smile upon its lips.
Scents, touches, sounds, snatches of songs
brush us, pass us, give us delightful shocks.
Then peradventure there's a flash of lightning:
whomever I see that instant I fall in love with.
I call that person and cry: 'This life is blest!
For your sake such miles have I traversed!'
All those others who came close and moved off
in the darkness - I don't know if they exist or not.
