Just picked up a Chim, bought it from a mate who has owned it since 2001, L reg Cooper Green, it’s old and needs love, but it’s brilliant. The other cars its nemesis….a 3.2S Boxster 😂

Here's a question, when people restore TVR's do some people galvanize the chassis instead of powder coating them again?

Dip-galvanising is a risky business as some people have (apparently) had the chassis distort due to the heat. You also have to drill holes all over it. When I have the chassis' done, I have them spray-galvanised, which is zero-risk (just costs a bit more) and then 2k painted. The cheapest way is just to powder coat them again, and surprise-surprise, they don't last very long!

@@UPnDOWN interesting - I saw somebody on the web galvanize dip their esprit chassis and was amazed how cheap it was ( less than £200) ...and wondered why everyone didnt do it..then I recalled someone way back when saying, it can distort things, even just doing suspension components. Even plating can, I am told. I have a low mileage original 92 Griff 4.3 and, despite being dry driven and stored (mainly stored!) now needs the suspension components sprucing up Its only surface rust and flaky paint - could u give a guide as to cost for such smaller items - who would u recommend - do they do the 2k too? ...dont suppose u have an LT77 92 Griff speedo sensor? ;) Stopped working whilst laid up for yrs - speedo still smoothly rises from off scale to zero with ignition Besotted by all Wheeler era cars and loved his laconic, laid back style. Had the pleasure of a few short chats, Trev too :) Desperately miss the factory and great team that made these beasts possible. Totally agree with your 'custodian' view :)

That's such a beautiful car... And really like your explanations for us non mechanics. I'd love to have one of these but they obviously need a helleva lot of work and maintenance. Would you say it's the best roaster ever made?

They're really not that difficult to look after! The only thing is that it's vital to have someone (either a garage like me, or yourself as an owner) maintain it as you can spot when something's going to cause a problem before it actually happens. They're actually nothing like as expensive to run as most people assume. Best roadster ever made? I don't think I could argue the case for any car as it's such a subjective thing, but the Chimaera's definitely up there for me, along with the Frogeye Sprite and MX-5.
