Adam Savage steps onto one of the film stages at Aardman Animations, where a complex and detailed miniatures set is ready for stop-motion filming. Chatting with one of the Animation Directors of the film, Adam learns how the puppets are mounted on these sets to make them come alive, one frame at a time.

This is definitely one of my favourite Tested series. Adam is perfect, enough insider knowledge to ask pertinent, interesting and often unthought of questions - and his enthusiasm is infectious! It brings the people he's interviewing to life by given them free reign to froth and enthuse too. Love it.

I'm sure I'm not the only one that gets extremely overwhelmed with anxiety at the sheer amount of work involved with a stop-motion scene with even 1 character present. I find digital animation tedious, but what these people do is an entire world apart from digital animation. It's incredible that films are made like this at all and I can't help but feel the fact they are is a universal anomaly that we're all incredibly lucky to share in through this series.

Didn’t they use actual smoke in the curse of the were-rabbit??? I remember seeing a behind the scenes video and they were using fog machines. I never realized that using smoke in stop-motion would be hard. I guess Aardman Animation is the best of the best really.
@davidrenton
@davidrenton 10 ай бұрын
well think stop motion , everything is static, move a bit, next frame, use a fog machine, or real water, it's constantly changing , so it would 'jump' across frames and not look very good or consistent

Around the 12 minute mark where he's talking about 'the human touch' I'm so glad they're happy to leave things like that in. It seems that too many recent stop motion movies have everything look perfect. For example, Kubo and the two strings where practically everything was 3d printed or CGI, it defeats the purpose IMO. It's indistinguishable from 3d generated animation.

I could think of none better than Adam and the Tested Crew to ask this of: Is there someone out there who would make (or has made) a reasonably priced 3D printed Nautilus from Disney's 1954 "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" that I could get in touch with? Models online tend to be prohibitively expensive. I'd like to get one relatively cheap and perhaps assemble and paint it myself. Thanks in advance. Keep up the good work, Justin
