The Lunar trilogy was translated into English in 2022. I made sure my local library got a copy, which might be the only copy of the book that has reached Finland. I have only read the first part, On the Silver Globe, but I intend to read the rest. I can't speak Polish, so I can't say how close a translation it is, but the language of the book was much easier to understand than the dialogue in the movie. It wasn't flowery and poetic, it was very easy to understand. In the book it's very clear that the austronauts land on the moon, but in the film it's a different planet. This is a very understandable change as man hadn't landed on the moon when the book was published, but had done so when the movie was being filmed. Another interesting change is that in the film all the austronauts are Polish, but in the book they make a deal about the expedition being a very international affair. The mission is led by an Irishman, the male travelers are English, French, Polish and Portuguese, and Martha is Indian. In the book they also point out that Martha isn't actually an austronaut, she's the daughter of a wealthy and powerful man and has bought herself on board because she's in love with one of the austronauts. The Polish character is the narrator. In the movie his equivalent is named Jerzy, the same as thr name of the author, but in the book he goes by a different name, I forget which.

No this film should not get a remake. They will destroy it like any remake in recent years. The beauty of this movie is its bizarre and special feel to it. Bringing more mainstream techniques in it would simply corrupt it. This is a gem of uniqueness, cherish it as it is !

This has been my #1 favorite film ever since I first saw it and I truly think more people should see it, thank you for this impressive video essay! You don't really comprehend its genius philosophical narrative until watching it at least 3 or 4 times (at least for me,) which is hard enough as is because it can be an exhausting movie. That would certainly be a risk. But even if someone remakes it, and it sucks, it would still drive interest for the original. With any luck, a failed remake could even lead to a proper re-release of the film and a greater spread of information. I think the whole "no such thing as bad publicity" concept would apply here. Thanks for sharing so much information about the movie! I found the film several years ago and I became obsessed with it, even though I didn't understand it fully. I agree about your remake suggestions, but one of the most fascinating things of the original is the darkness, the chaos, the criptical meanings and 80s anesthetics, which I'm not sure a current production could achieve Anyway, congratulations!

Luckily, the film is back on KZbin, and I watched it today. I wrote some long, convoluted, word salad of a review on Letterboxd, lamented on twitter how I needed someone to talk to about the masterpiece I’d just seen, and then searched for an analysis/review of the film back on KZbin. I’m really glad I came across your video because, while lots of people might think of remakes and reboots are BAD, NO TOUCHY, I’m all for accessibility for wider audiences. Especially as a huge fan of See (which takes place in a very future version of where I live), I was glad to see (heh) you recommend it as a potential influence for what an updated On the Silver Globe might look like. Loved your video, wish you had more for me to binge. I also wish I’d had a friend like you in film school, I just feel like you and I could’ve geeked out on a lot of obscure and cult horror/scifi.

Hello Jonah Izyk Thank you for the good explanatory video. Of course, I would also like to see the complete version of "Silver Globe". With today's advances in generation AI, if technologies such as image generation and video generation advance, it may be possible to recreate missing parts in the future. (Alternatively, it may be possible to create a thinking AI based on all the information that Andrzej Żuławski has verbalized.) If a remake is possible, I would definitely like to see it happen. However, the spirit that went into the production at that time will likely be lost. What they (director, staff, cast, original author) were trying to create cannot be recreated with a remake. I don't know if they want that. And even though this movie is unfinished, it is definitely a great work.

This is such an amazing video. I have been trying to find a way and time to watch On the Silver Globe for about a year since I first discovered it. I do hope a remake would explore much more the colonialism aspect and ask uncomfortable questions like "Even if you're trying to be free, does that make it right to move to a land that isn't yours?" or "What does it mean that your existence is because of an awful and despicable act of colonialism, enslavement, and exploitation?" My family is Dominican and that is a question that I've been asking myself for awhile due to the history of that country was built entirely on colonialism, genocide, and slaves and that we're mostly descendants of the Spaniards, natives, and African slaves. I think with people talking more and more about the dark history in the Americas from the Atlantic slave trade to the subjugation and genocide of the natives, this is something that I think can be an interesting exploration.

Excellent video essay, just hearing you summarize the movie was dramatic and exciting. 'On The Silver Globe' is one of the greatest works of science fiction ever made, and if it had been given its due it would be hugely popular. I don't fully agree that the film should be remade though, for a couple reasons. Firstly, I am really very skeptical that Mr. Big Name Producer could really carry over what makes this story great to a larger audience. Hollywood has obviously created great movies, but 'On The Silver Globe' just isn't the sort of film I could imagine being competently remade. I fear we would get something like the American 'Solaris' versus the Russian 'Solaris'. Mainstream audiences are open to really fantastic cinema (I hate the idea that mainstream audiences are stupid, they just don't have good options!) but I doubt the powers behind a remake would respect mainstream audiences enough to make a good remake for them. If the film is to be re-released & re-mastered, I am all for that! If there is a remake, I hope it is done by Polish filmmakers who have the same passion and love for the art that Zulwalski had. This film and the drama surrounding it are as significant as the film itself, and it only seems right that a story so closely tied to Poland should be made BY Polish artists. Secondly, I think there is great value in leaving a film like "untouched", so to speak. Making something more accessible to more people could result in it losing certain traits that make it great. Maybe it is better to leave it, and to let people who love movies and who love science fiction wrestle with and come to terms with the movie as it is. I think that could be extremely valuable. Art is not always meant to be accessible, it is sometimes better to be difficult to watch or understand. It wouldn't hurt anyone's movie palette to watch 'On the Silver Globe' as it is and still find the undeniably beautiful story within it.

This movie casts the spectator as an active co creator of the movie! And that is what makes it brilliant. its difficult and demanding, its perfect there is no need of a hollywood-downgrade. If there would be any new development to present the themes or the raw pain that this movie was made I would say yes! Example, if the ( if there are) any grand children of Żuławski's would make a sequal to the movie ! Or new fotage is found To just copy past the narrative ( the narrative is a smoke screen, a fasade) would be a poor choise,... I absolutely loved this video essay but I hate the general idea of it! lol. "big producers" are exactly what stories like these dont need. I dont think this epic movie needs a remake, much less an american remake. Also the references you used like GOT and See, are horrible references to remake this movie. OTSG is not a simple narrative but an art movie, full of visual poetry and open monologues. American producers would just kill it. The ONLY way I can see it being remade is that IF an existentialist director like Terrence Malick or Alejandro Innarritu, took on the project and worked together with Emmanuel Lubezki on the cinematography of it. That can be cool and interesting, otherwise american producers would kill it with a remake like they always do with european /asian movies (let the right one in and many others).

This movie is perfect as it is. Remakes suck, they only serve to robbing the original title of its real effectiveness and edge. If it works, it's much better to leave it as it is. The right thing to do is to spread the word about its existence and give it its place, which it not only has as a great film but also as a testimony to the conflicts between politics and cinema. The metanarrative of its status as an unfinished film just makes it work more, because somehow what happens in the story inside the movie also happens in the real world with it. You see the fictional shots and the street shots, as if there was a link between the two perceptions, the imaginary and the real. These inserts just elevate your viewing experience. Perfect and gestural solution to the missing scenes.Without those sequences it wouldn't be so great because it adds a documentary value within a science fiction movie. Found footage inside found footage. Great movie.

Thanks for bringing attention to one of my favorite movies. I don't think a remake would do anything but pale in comparison. This movie belongs to the time period in which it was made. The 1970s was the most fearless decade for cinema and I cringe at any 1970s part 2 ideas(besides it's chronologically impossible). Most decades have bests and worsts. It's the 1920s and 70s for cinema. What do other people think

I think that if anyone can do a good remake that maybe (big maybe) Christopher Nolan would do a pretty good job if he recreates it scene by scene but I really don't think a remake is necessary.

To me this movie was sometimes masterful, sometimes laughably bad. Most of the time it was so confusing it was unbearable to keep watching. I don't really know how to feel about it. It is definitely worth a watch if you like very weird and niche science fiction

24:09 No, they don't represent 'reason itself', that is a gross misinterpetation- quite the opposite, they represent what żuławski considers 'animal nature' in the sense of some kind of lack of consciousness, equanimity I would strongly doubt

Watching the film is like being an alien trying to read and comprehend a jumbled copy of the Iiad; a fragment of another civilization's originary epic.. It's a magnificently shot film, but also unbearably acted. If a remake doesn't include that camera work, I don't think it would be worth it. I am very impressed with this video though. Nice job.

"The sherns say that we are defective, we do not know how to direct the evil in ourselves, nor the force" When Marek arrives, the humans are in a state of servitude to the sherns, where they pay tribute to them while the shern impregnate human women to generate hybrids loyal to them and slaughter human children to "remove the demon" from inside them. Marek's "guide" explains to him that they must be respected, because they are better in understanding, they have a third eye that sees and speaks without eyes or mouth, and that he should not try to understand why they let some live and kill others, because they see and know everything. Yet it is reported to him that at the time they achieved all of this, they could still fly, whereas now they cannot. It is also reported that there is a sect of "scientists" who do not believe the sherns are real, but that they are a reflection of the dark side of the humans. Marek was outraged at all he heard because he sees the Shern as weak and defenseless, but when he hears this last hypothesis, he immediately looks at the man with disgust, and questions if he really believes in this. He is overcome by ego, now that he is their savior, and has no understanding of his own shadow. I believe the sherns are not at all symbolizing rationality or anything of that sort, but rather and quite clearly the shadow, in the jungian sense. The rest of the movie is simply his confrontation with his shadow, manifested in him by the eyes of the shern. Ihezal, the priest`s daughter, is easily the most interesting character in the movie, even before you take this into account, but much more so after you do. She is the one who helps Marek get in touch with said shadow, because she has had very "close contact" herself. In this sense, she also represents Eve, and gets them both cast out.

I’m not trying to discard your idea but I think Instead of remaking it they should try and make their own Movie that is subtly inspired by it. On the silver globe is a one hit wonder.

I agree with you. I think the term "remake" is a bit loaded. I probably should have used the term "adaptation."

A pretty cool teaser trailer in the beginning, but come on, let's not kid ourselves - regular audiences who want a COMPREHENSIBLE story would boo this movie off of the screen. Żuławski is a surrealist, his dialogue is near-unintelligible (I'm Polish, I know what I'm talking about) and his camera work is, in parts, vomit-inducing. Yes, this movie has great visuals, great costumes, some nice use of music, and even a compelling message (at least for me), but the editing is jumbled, the acting is loony, and the spoken lines are bordering on gibberish in parts. This is a movie for a very specific type of movie buffs, not for general audiences. I, personally, somewhat like the movie, overall, but I understand that for most people it would be unbearable to sit through. All of that said, it would be neat to see somebody else try to tell this story and, most importantly, keep the anti-religious and anti-societal messages. But I don't see it happening ever. There wouldn't be any money in it, and that is the only incentive nowadays for any kind of reasonable sci-fi budget.

10:25 work politics as in real life politcs, bc of the political danger in the dpeut cms notion; the point is he personally was a hardliner and didn't like it and saw it as a threat to the govt and he had the stick which was administratively important Regarding things I'm clear about- Also, wrong eagle and colour, for the PRL period it should be a crownless eagle on a cinnabar background (u can look up the prl eagle logo); the eagle's generald esign (with a crown) comes from 1927 (thought it was histrocially inspired) therefore using it to refer to Partition-era Poland is inaccurate. It is also inaccurate to say 'Poland' disappeared, 'Poland' didn't disappear but the state of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth didn't. The idea of a place, there and elsewhere continuously lived on in people's understanding, even as attempts were made to consciously abolish it through internal censorship (in Russia especially)

In the starting of the film they talk about how there is radiation on the planet and after it they show their skin getting extremely black like you get from burning but it doesn't follow it skin colour was changing throughout the film ,anyone knows why? Or was it just camera angles?

When I watched I felt a lot of similitudes to Nietzche’s thought. The idea of the death of God that translates as the death of the concept of absolute truth it’s for me one of the main arguments of the film. Our whole society has been built around the platonic concept of truth, that means that our existence and the meaning of life sustains by our blind faith in truth, in our desire to reach that pure and absolute truth and that desire has leaded the humanity to create religions. There other arguments like the differentiation between the human and the other (animal) or the human being as a specie that likes to be dominated by someone (a leader, a messiah, a system) because we are too coward and confuse to look into the eyes of the abyss of our existence and let ourselves be carried away for it.

Honestly it’s nice to understand the language and plot, but that’s not the reason I love this film. It’s just pure filmmaking originality, sounds ironic because it’s an adaptation, but the irony cancels itself out because the OG writer is a close relative to the director. Lol
