Fascinating tale Richard (as always). Interesting fact about the griffin - it has been used as the logo on Vauxhall cars since 1903 having previously been used some 40 years earlier when the company was formed as the Vauxhall Iron Works.

Oh yes - I remember now you mention it. I had a Vauxhall Viva, back in the day, and yes there was a girffin. Thanks for reminding me!

Egypt you say... well that begins to make sense. It could have been a carving of an Egyptian god about which tales were made when it was brought back to Sussex where such things had probably not been seen before ... from which legends and tales are born. A great little tale, well told. Thank you!

Oh that is interesting - I love the fact that there are many possibilities for the it''s origin. Makes it use of the imagination. :)

Greeting from Ireland, we had a giant Buzzard visit our garden last year, must have taken a day out from the bird sanctuary near by, could have been a Griffin looking for a Leprechaun's pot of gold, but sadly no. Good video

This is where these old legends can easily come from, a miss sighting of a different animal. Thanks so much for the comment and for watching.

Enjoyed the tale! It piqued my interest as I am researching Tartaria, a once world-wide civilization which was brought down and relegated to a small area in eastern Russia. The symbol for Tartaria is the Griffin!
@RichardVobes6 жыл бұрын
oooh how interesting. Perhaps the Griffin in my story was brough over from Russia and not Egypt as recorded in the book?

I've noticed there is no shortage of very high-end homes. Here in the middle of corn country in the U.S. you'll find money no object estates scattered everywhere.

If Julia can believe in Unicorns,why not Griffins? As Harold of Cardboard said,it’s fun to be silly! I’m just off now to feed my pet Troll!! Get down boy!!
Geographically, I have found the following, which suggests the Griffin could be lurking a little further south than your hunting ground ... and Wiston House could be mansion built with the proceeds of the gold? Wiston Estate woodland The Wiston Estate is made up of 6,200 acres, of which woodland comprises around 1,200 acres. The woodland can be split into three different areas: The downland woods situated on the southernmost part of the estate, from Findon village to ‘hillside’. The ‘hillside’ runs along scarp slope of the South Downs from the town of Steyning to Washington village. The Weald from Wiston to the villages of Ashington and Ashurst. The woodland is made up of about 65% hardwood and around 45% softwood with the softwood trimmings making up the bulk of the material used for the biomass boiler at Wiston House. There is about 150 acres of sweet chestnut wood, of which the poorer quality produced makes up the rest of the material used for the biomass boiler. In the region of 400 tons of material is required for the Biomass boiler each year.

You could well be right about Wiston House - a lovely place. I have filmed there in the long distance past - a wedding I think it was, (I was helping a friend) but I couldn't go there with my camera on a whim without permission. Thanks for all the extra info though. What a shame to burn all that wood in a biomass boiler. Send it to me and I will burn it in my esse!
