9:30 It's not "Sierra Madre"...it's "Sierra Blanca" near Ruidoso that's snow-capped.

Pretty drive. I heard the illustrator Bill Maouden from WW II grew up along that road with the apples. He wrote "Up Front" which illustrated the lives of Willie and Joe, two infantrymen during WW II.

Told some Hispanic coworkers in McAllen, TX I was moving to Santa Fe, NM in 1993. Said I was about to become a New Mexican. They thought that was pretty funny and welcomed me to the brotherhood.

It's amazing how much the temperature changes in the summer from the bottom of that road to the top.

As you were driving through the section of new pavement, that is where a large boulder fell from the mountain into the road in front of my car. It was about 3 feet in diameter and stopped on the center line. I missed hitting it by about 1 foot. After that I will alway be aware when I see a Watch for Falling Rocks sign. This happened in 2003 when my wife was pregnant with my youngest daughter.

While talking about humidity, Rusty said that he lived in Victoria Tx for 15 years and didn't know that you're supposed to breathe thru your nose.... lol Reminds me of an old saying: "If you live in the gulf coast area long enough you will eventually develop gills"

Lots of places in NM named in honor of Kit Carson like the national forest west of Taos. Ive done lots of reading on him. Spoke several languages but couldn't read or write well. Pretty small guy but wouldn't hesitate and did put a man down if they messed with him or give them a hug if they needed one. In general a hero but has a mixed reputation among Indians. Unfortunately like most hero's of the past current culture like to take them down.
