In the aristocracy the concept of marrying for love was incomprehensible. Marriage was for forming alliances and brokering peace between rival states. Romance was something that happened behind the scenes with mistresses. That's the world Charles was raised in. He wanted to marry Camilla, who he did love, but they wouldn't allow that and pushed him into an arranged marriage with Diana, who they thought would be good for the profile of the royal family. He explained it to her before they got married but for whatever reason she couldn't handle the arrangement.

Not baffling at all madam.. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Charles already loved Camilla but his family sent him away abroad for 2 years in order they could find a fairytale bride for him.. Arranged marriages can never work. Now , at last he can be with the woman he always truly loved and the Queen realises her mistake and now gives her blessing to Charles and Camilla.

@Huw Wilson I'd ssay that its truer that he did love her briefly as he was clealry attracted to her nad drawn to her but when they got to know each other better, they realised they had very little in common and were not happy. Perhaps some couples might have worked out a relationship that was OK, but they did not find much common ground.. and Charles had had a happy love affair with Camilla.. and Diana was very lovely and flrity and it wasn't hard for her to find other men who admired her...

Diana had stated in a much later interview (that was released after her death) that right after the birth of Prince Harry, Prince Charles felt he had done his duty in having the "heir and the spare" and moved full-on with his relationship with Camilla. This really enraged Diana but she focused on her children until they were sent to boarding schools then she began to seethe at Charles' rejection and angered that while her every move and every encounter with male friends and such was monitored and scrutinized, no one called out the elephant in the room which was Charles' affair with his mistress.

Her mother has been “ vilified” for leaving, but she had been abused by Diana’s father, so left, intending to come back for the children. Her own mother testified against her, so she lost custody to Diana’s father. I also realized that Camilla may have represented Diana’s step mother. There was always another woman in the way of the man she loved.**
