I am doing exactly the same as you, On30 with Code 100 rail. using the same spiking Pliers you are using. However, I have to drill an .025 diameter hole where ever a spike will be placed because the spikes will bend, if I don't. Needless to say the drilling of the holes has added a bunch of time to the process! The spikes have been purchased from Fast Tracks and are Micro Engineering's Medium spikes. What am I doing wrong? .

I am curious, what material are your ties and what material is the roadbed? I found if I used "hardboard" for my roadbed it would bend spikes left and right unless I drilled the holes. For ties, I know Fast-Tracks uses white pine, and I have tried basswood with bad results.

@@MakeItWithCalvin Yes, Fast Tracks uses white pine and I know other manufacturers use Sugar Pine, which might be a softer wood. What do you use?

Forgot to respond: My road bed is Homasote from Central and Western Homaroad Supply, (good stuff). I am also using Small spikes also from Fast Tracks, which are actually a Micro Engineering product.
