JD, I agree that we go 11-1, but I think the loss is FSU, not UF. I think we then beat FSU in the ACC Championship game, Yeah, I bought the Kool-Aid this year (as usual). On paper, we're up there just behind Georgia, OSU, Texas & Oregon (who Mario helped build). Next year, we'll not be behind them but be considered next to them. (see what I mean about the Kool-Aid)

Week one will set the tone for the rest of the season for Miami. The home crowd at the VT game for a 4-0 Miami vs a 3-1 Miami will be night and day. Which may in turn decide if they leave that game 5-0 or 3-2. Too many fans already see this as “THE YEAR”… some of it for good reason. If they start the season out 0-1, a large portion of the fan base will check out & the chirping for “we need a change” will start. Then the “mercenaries” that Miami has brought in to play here for one year will start worrying about their “future plans” and I think the team spirals. Week one has never meant more than this year, imo.

Man do I have some thoughts. That first game, it's an interesting point because it's not just the Swamp, or an in state rivalry game, that's gonna even out a lot of things, but it's the Gators first game in the Swamp. You head to Gainesville as Kentucky week 8, maybe facing a 3 loss Gators team that you've somehow beaten up on recently, that's not necessarily a Gainesville that believes. Week 1 though, that's going to be a mad house, on TOP of all the other factors. That said I still haven't seen anything from Florida's off-season to believe anything else is going to go right for them. It's not just that Miami's portal wins changed the dynamic of this game, but even a broken TVD led Hurricanes team from last year was a match-up challenge for Florida, this year it's a nightmare. I didn't see anything in spring, or through the portal to prove that Florida has solved their offensive line woes. By far their biggest weakness last year, they gave up 39 sacks, just so happens to be Miami's greatest defensive strength. It's possible things have gotten better, but to date I haven't seen anyone writing articles about how the Gators have fixed their line issues, and will be able to keep Mertz upright against what's widely considered a top five unit in Miami's defensive line. The Hurricanes may be weaker in the secondary (though they went out and got some dudes of their own to shore up depth/talent issues there), but they might not need to be great if Bain Barrow and Co. are living in the backfield all day. Then you have Miami's new look offense. It might now work, defense always plays better week one than offenses do, and it is the Swamp. But again, even without the new pieces Miami was already fielding one of the top run and pass blocking units up front, really only needing to shore up the center position again, which they've seemingly done. Florida's defense was pretty atrocious last year, but they were particularly bad against teams that had dynamic/mobile QBs, and teams that could run the ball traditionally. That's why they had the fewest runs against in the SEC, 7th in the nation, but gave up the 5th most rushing yards (yes that ballooned after the LSU game). Ward is not quite that dynamic, but Martinez is definitely that good, and so is Miami's offensive line. Match-up wise, mid season form on a neutral field this looks like the LSU game on paper, except Miami can actually play defense (seriously who had the SEC being a score first conference last year on their bingo card?). There's the reality that Cristobal hasn't done it yet, and that Miami teams haven't done it in 2 decades, but to me this game has the potential to get ugly unless we see something out of Florida's fall camp that indicates they've got better offensive line play, and their defense has markedly improved from the 86th ranked unit they fielded last year. For the rest of the season, I think it's all relative to what happens in game one. I don't get why people are in love with VaTech just because of returning production, and how they ended the year. They still lost the only two games that would have been impressive, and their victories came against the worst of the ACC last year (Pitt, Virginia, Wake, Syracuse, and the only team at .500 BC). I understand Miami struggled last year, but I'm not quite feeling the Hokie Hype. Honestly the Cal and Syracuse games feel more like traps. Ott is still the best running back in the conference, that's still a long trip, and it's just before a bye week that sets up Miami for its two toughest games. And 'Cuse to end the season, with a QB who was good enough to be recruited at OSU whatever they want to pretend, could be interesting. I think Miami goes 10-2 this year, and I think they do it losing to either FSU or Louisville, and some other ACC team they shouldn't lose to (it's still Miami). I don't know if they get to the ACC title game in that situation, and so I don't know if that's good enough to be in playoff consideration, but I'd believe it should be. Honestly this team is good enough to go 12-0, quite easily. If you look at the flaws some of the top teams have, and the question marks they're facing, Miami's got a few positions that there are questions of quality and depth, but not on the front line on both sides of the ball, not at the skill positions on offense for both receiving and running, and not a hint of a question at kicking. It's coaching, and it's the history of not being able to overcome speed bumps of their own making.

Please repeat all you said for the naysayers in the back. I agree with everything you just laid out. The difference between this Miami team going 10-2 or 12-0 is standing on Mario and his coaching staff's ability or lack thereof to properly coach and manage the game. Like you mentioned, they basically have all of the components as far as talent to easily go 12-0 especially with the schedule that they have coming up. This is going to be all on Mario and his staff.

Jordan Travis was also one of the top QBs in the conference now they have DJU who has been average at best at every stop. So what makes them 2-3 years ahead? Definitely not recruiting, Miami has the best recruiting classes in the ACC the past two seasons…

Bro, I’d be very interested to know how you came to the conclusion that Miami goes into Tropicana Stadium in Gainesville and leave with the L! I just don’t see it. I’m sure Florida will be an improved program but I’m not buying the hype. It’ll be a very hostile environment for sure. The place will be rocking! However, I think that folks are not seeing just how strong this Miami team is going to really be. I get it. It is highly unlikely that this team will implode after just one loss, as they are made up of a group of guys with strong character and a lot at stake for their future careers.

The kids left over from last year dropped 6 of their last 9 games after a solid start. That’s been a trend there over the years. It’s always possible that toughened them up, and always possible it didn’t. The transfer kids coming in have some obvious talent, but who knows how they would handle that situation. This game is so interesting because of how vital it is for both teams and coaches, despite being early and non-conference. TONS of pressure on both sides. And that character thing isn’t a shot at Miami. I love the roster FSU is bringing to the table this year. I’m not worried one bit about whether we have the talent or athleticism to be great. But I knew what we had with last years team, in terms of being mentally tough. That group found ways to win. There’s something to be said about knowing how to win ugly. I love all the positive practice reports and whatever we can get this time of year, but until they go out and face some adversity, I dont know anything about who is legit.
