Welcome to Porsche! I have worked on them since 1972. See the Evo car on the same track video! The movie is not sped up, the car is fast. Porsche was involved in aviation and military designs in his early career. See his history, from a time when everything was new. No computers or CAD, all slide rule, talent and concept men. There were so many brilliant designers and concept men in his time, too many to list. Each Furman Carrera 4 cam engine, a masterpiece of engineering, took a master mechanic 150 hours to build one engine at the factory. TLC, all by hand. The G50 964/993 transmission was by far a beautiful, functional, high quality brilliant design for the street cars and was my favorite. Porsche patented tortion bar suspension, synchromesh in transmissions. I am a Porsche Master Technician 1995' and also a licensed aviation mechanic. The Hindenberg Zeppelin used Maybach Diesel engines, taking the contract from Mercedes. The engineers designed exhaust gas through an exhaust gas condensation radiator to take on water to exactly balance fuel burned maintaining a weight and balance that was nearly perfect.

If you find the videos on here from 1950s & early '60s races you will find the course was much better then. The current course is from a later era where they turned straights into esses & added chicanes to slow them down. They also trimmed off & flattened mounds where the cars once got airborne. And whoever made the decision to do away with the original start/finish/pit area with it's ultra-fast, side by side, opposite direction straightaways, should be locked for life in a mental institution.

Hi Marius, I have just watched this wonderful footage of Derek Bell paying tribute to the much missed Stefan Bellof. Absolutely wonderful, thank you so much. I never had the honour of meeting Stefan but did meet Derek back in the mid 1980s (1984/1985?) at a WSC race at Brands Hatch, attended by my dad and I Had a brief chat with him and got a book signed. Derek is a true gentleman. We also saw both Derek and Stefan racing in the WSC in 1984 and 1985 at Brands Hatch and Silverstone. Stefan was a true star in the making in WSC and F1 (surely a future F1 Champion) and is truly missed. I can still remember hearing the news of Stefan's passing after I had returned from a British race meeting at Snetterton on 1/9/85. Tragic...

It must be difficult for a driver to keep his professionalism while driving. To see all those people at Brunnchen, and know every eye was upon you it would be difficult not to fall prey to the moment and lose concentration. I read a quote from Jackie Stewart where he would recite a sort of mantra to prepare before the race, "No sense of occasion, no sense of occasion." To remind himself to stay professional and concentrate upon the driving and not upon the excitement of the spectacle.

For quite a while YT had a 1983 onboard video of Bell in his 956 at the Nordschleife, with his excellent over-dubbed commentary describing the entire circuit: gear changes, speed, racing line strategy, track surface nuances, etc. Though not a flying lap, he's tearing it up. (Bellof's car is seen leaving the pits at video's beginning; I'm pretty sure this is the same qualifying session in which he set the record.) Now, however, I can't find this video. If anyone has seen it recently, please post the link. It's spectacular. Thanks.
