Thank you for bringing this beast back from the grave. When I was young these and others still roamed the rails and I would fall asleep in Colorado listening the moans of the whistles and the chuffing of the steam exhaust. It is a sound that is sorely missed.

Fantastic video! I saw Big Boy in Roseville Calif. and there were thousands who saw it for the 2 1/2 days it was here. It is heartwarming so many Americans go out of their way to see this magnificent piece of American history. Nationwide...it has such a strong following.

Its been running for over 5 years, and it still seems like a dream that came true, an answer to every railfans' prayers. In the early 1960s ( I was a preschooler)my grandpa would take me to the STL Transportation Museum near their home. I climbed around on the 4006, wishing I could have seen it run , or run once again. I did help with the restoration of Frisco 1522 there in 1988. But O what joy when in 2013 , when I heard about 4014!! Best time of my life, chasing it across its home state of Wyoming in 2019 on the The Great Race to Ogden. If you were there, maybe you remember a guy chasing on a black Honda Goldwing motorcycle...that was me! Thanx for the jizztastic vid, I subscribed.

In 1987, I was at the Pamona fairgrounds. As I wondered around that huge place, to my surprise, I came upon a R.R. garden with various steam engines & even a few Deisels on static display. I was in shock ! Among these beauties was the 4014. Massive power. Imagine my surprise when I watched on TV as they laid track to free her again. Glad U.P. has the funds and smarts to know what Americans like.

For some reason this video made me. Realize the shear scale of this engine it's really a beast, absolutely huge! Also saw they must have figured out the positive train control issue last time it made a tour they had a modern engine behind the tenders for back up Incase of mechanical issues and it took care of the positive train control duties. Would love to ride along, btw whistle work was classic!

I'm a draft horse guy, but always appreciated steam. The interplay between horses and steam during the steam era was a synergistic one. Steam created a tremendous demand for horses and horsemen, ironically enough. It was not until the advent of the internal combustion engine that real horsepower for transportation and agriculture began to wane and fade...along with steam. I'm grateful for those who preserve and create older technology.

Since you had an opportunity to ride along with the 4014 crew, I have a question. Since 4014 now burns fuel oil rather than coal, is the engine auto fired or does the fireman still have control over the burn rate? Great video. I loved the cab. Decades old technology and an iPad next to the engineer's right arm.
@KoryAnderson5 ай бұрын
Yes, the fireman is still very busy maintaining fire with oil injection, as well as water and steam pressure. He is making adjustments every 30-40 seconds. The pressure never varied but a few pounds from 300 psi all day. They are professionals for sure!

I knew I recognized the surroundings and train. I will say I think it was a huge mistake ripping out all the tracks across America and using trucks on the road. Maybe this is because of the train companies but heading into the future trains could easily play an automatic role for delivery of goods but after ripping out so many tracks I don't know if it would work anymore
@rickgray57315 ай бұрын
Thanks for a great video! Where does Bigboy get oil, grease & water from along the 150-mile journey? How much oil is used for a 150-mile trip? Does the Big boy pull the whole load, or does the Deisel help with the load? What kind of fuel mileage does it get, and what does it cost to maintain?
