I enjoyed this interview, and was wondering if Floyd mentioned anything about his original trainer and coach, Frank Lavel? I was trained by Frank in the 70's and would hear so many stories about Floyd, but I never hear Frank's name being mentioned anywhere. This is puzzling since Frank was so close to Floyd from his boxing start as a teen, amateur, Olympics, and first few years as a pro.

I remember predicting Ingemar Johansson would knock Floyd Patterson out. I was 14. I predicted Patterson would win the rematch because he sounded so serious. "I'm going to be vicious and I'm going to knock him out" and that's exactly what happened. It's amazing to hear he was so focused on defense. Listening to Patterson at the age of 51 you'd think he'd never suffered severe head trauma because his memory for his school teachers' names and his opponents' names, and the names of cities in Ireland, Sweden and New York he new well. However, a few years after this interview he started suffering mental deterioration and Alzheimer's disease. You never know what you'll be like in a few years.

Floyd could box. What lacked him was the will of living out of hurting and bleeding people. Dempsey, Marciano and others would go up the canvas, kill their opponent if they had to. After that they would have lunch together together with the guy they just fought against. Visit his family, keep in touch, tell jokes. The battle stayed behind. They didn't let what happened into their heart. That's not Floyd. He could fight. He could not like it. Happens all the time. Part of life. It is in his eyes. Beautiful job as always💯

It says in the book "The Greatest Fights... That Never Were" -by Matthew Bazell, that Marciano wanted absolutely nothing to do with Floyd Patterson. Marciano was offered 2 MILLION dollars. The Patterson people including Cus wanted that fight so bad. But Marciano wouldn't take it no matter how much he was offered. -(Rocky talks about all his multi-million dollar offers over at The Marciano Tapes #3). ...it's only been 14 months since Marciano fought Moore and the defeatism in Marciano's voice is undeniably resigned to futility. He is flabbergasted at Patterson's blinding speed and quickly realizes it would be pointless to comeback even though every sportswriter across America begged him to come out of retirement after Patterson just walked through everything Moore threw without blinking and KO’d Archie in 5. Directly after Patterson beat Moore for the vacant heavyweight championship Cus D'Amato suggested that the return of Rocky Marciano to the ring would be most welcome and would draw "the greatest gate in history." It's hilarious the way Marciano fans try to blame Patterson for ducking Marciano. Hey, Rocky is the one that QUIT way too soon. If little Rocky didn't🏃💨💨 away they undoubtedly would have fought!!! Moore didn't run away. Louis didn't run away. Charles didn't run away. No way Marciano coulda dealt with Patterson’s evasiveness and tremendous speed. I think he was a good person, He was a quiet kid with very low self esteam, then he got to Cus Gim ,and Cus had to teach him to hurt people,as u wrote, He did not have the killer instinct. Floyd was a true gentleman and a great fighter, one of the greatest HW champions in history. But where I take issue is how he STILL referred to Ali as "Clay" and this was in 1985.

Ali didn't call you Rabbit and Uncle Tom in public. You just don't do that especially back in mid 1960's. Ali called Joe Louis and Joe Frazier Uncle Tom too. Floyd and Ali knew one another since 1959 and Floyd had always helped him out letting young Cassius stay at his place giving money for food &gas etc... Floyd even stood up for him when Ali was in trouble and needed it at the most when he had no one on his side. Ali told Floyd that he was the only one can call him Cassius aside his own mom.(in 67 and again in 96) It was Ali's way of saying he was sorry for what he did to Floyd. He never did that to Joe Frazier and Joe couldn't forgave him to the end of his day on this earth. Ali did some nasty to good people that some people tend to overlook.

Ali called him "Tom" because not only did Floyd refer to him as "Clay" but Floyd also publicly demeaned the NOI by saying that the religion "stinks." Ali called Louis a Tom too because Joe did basically the same thing and also criticized Ali for refusing the draft. To say that Floyd supported Ali is total bullshit. That never happened.

Aged extremely well! Looks the same as he did 20-30 years previously in the photos from the 1950-60s! Well spoken as well (although there were some slurs!), considering he was the equivalent of today's cruiserweight. So, he was busted up by far bigger heavyweights, Liston 2x and out-punched by Ali 2x. He kept his faculties better than Ali, who allowed himself to absorb heavy punches from the likes of Foreman, Fraizer, Norton, Shavers, and Holmes - far too much!

Ali v Patterson 2 : Ali agreed to that fight so Patterson could have another pay day. He was basically defenseless against Ali. Ali realized this and started pulling his punches so as not to hurt Patterson unnecessarily. When the fight was over Patterson asked Ali if he could call him by his given name and Ali said well yeah I guess YOU can. ( He probably just meant that one time or between the two of them) Ali must have liked and respected Patterson. About that fight Patterson later said he'd never been hit that lightly in his whole life. Ali could have done irreparable damage to Patterson but instead he spared him from the fate that Ali himself was to later suffer. I do not believe Patterson intended disrespect as so many others did, to their own detriment. 💫 Still though... 🤔

I would like to address Patterson calling Ali Clay since it seems to be a big point of animosity in this comments section. He wrote an article for Esquire called "In defense of Cassius Clay". In it he talks about the drama leading up to their fights etc. Well, he refused to call him Muhammad Ali for a few reasons- one, his mother still called him Ali, and two Muhammad Ali was disrespecting Patterson by calling him the "Old Rabbit" instead of his name in the lead up to the fight (part of the gimmick for the fight, read the old articles and it'd make sense). But the biggest reason was because Patterson wasn't sure he was really a Muslim anymore. He said it seemed to him like he joined the Nation of Islam because of his friendship with Malcolm X, and after they killed X, he wanted out but was too scared/being threatened- Patterson was right, as Ali left the N.O.L., but he stayed a Muslim. After the fights, and because he wrote an article praising Ali and defending him when the whole world was against him after he refused to be drafted, when they met again he called him Clay and Ali was never upset. He asked if he could call him, it and he said yes. To my knowledge, Ali's mother and Patterson were the only people he let call him Clay. They had developed a very mutual respect for each other- especially after Ali Patterson II where he was TKod by a cut on the eye. If he hadn't been pulled out of the fight over that injury, I don't think Ali would've knocked him out, and I think Patterson would have just been barely behind on points even in his old age (I think he was like 38-39 years old) and the fact his lower spine was basically snapped in half and his bobbing and weaving style requires heavy use of his spine and he still managed to hold his own, Ali really began to respect him. The two big articles that can explain the situation are the Esquire article I mentioned and Sports Illustrated's article "rabbit hunting in Vegas". It kinda gives a picture of their background with each other. They weren't close friends or anything, just on friendly terms, but real recognizes real, and after that 2nd fight Ali realized Patterson wasn't the punk he was depicted as being in the media and was at one point in time really the best. I feel really bad for the bad rap Patterson gets. He wasn't the incompitent champion who wormed his way into the spotlight he's thought of today. The man won a gold medal at the Olympics. He ended up losing a lot of Finesse largely because of Cus D'mato and their fight on mob control over boxing in the 50s and 60s pulled D'mato away from Patterson because his life was in danger by the mob. If it was a crime free sport and Patterson was able to have a proper environment, while I don't think he'd ever really beat Ali or Liston, I do think he could have remained a very high ranking contender well into his old age. I definitely think he'd have beaten Johanson easily like he did in the 2nd and 3rd fights- when D'mato wasn't in as much danger because he no longer controlled the champ and could devout more time to training. A fight between Frazier and Patterson is a dream to me.

Cus didn't teach him anything. He was only a manager that good to some point. Floyd had to fire him for reasons. The only person who taught/trained him on boxing was Frank Lavelle. After D'Amato double crossed Lavelle and cut him off, Floyd self taught himself and trained himself. The person who gave Floyd confidence and taught him to believe in himself was a female teacher at the reform school. Her name was Vivian something. Floyd was actually annoyed to hear Cus D'Amato's name.
