the analogues of the mjo phases 7-8 with laniña for the month move the centroid of the high towards iceland, which means europe would be on the colder side, but its statistical, its not guaranteed, every years is slightly different.

2018 wasn't even that extreme for low temperatures in Bedford, as the strong easterly winds stopped the temperatures falling too much at night. We've had much colder temperatures since: December 2022 being a notable example.

Would be nice for us in the East of the country to get some of the white stuff! We got zero during the last cold spell. Although I can't complain too much, we did get a lot in February 2021 when the rest of the country got none!

Why is the stratosphere below average most of the time but not the surface? Even though that we're in global warming. I thought that the losing of the ice would warm the stratosphere up, but it clearly keeps cooling down.

Earth's climate is dynamic and complex. What happens with surface level ice had little to no effect on the Stratosphere.

@@MattyP62618 Bruh, it does, or else the Stratosphere wouldn't even be at those temperatures. Because the further up you go, the colder it gets.

And I know that the further "up" you go (don't know whether your referring to the atmosphere or latitude), the colder it gets. Still doesn't take away from my point that sea ice extent doesn't really do that much to the Stratosphere.

True. I believe December 2010 had lots of wobbles in the charts before it happened.
