I would understand it if the patient would suffer pain with no chance of surviving. For example my dad had cancer and was too weak for chemo. He would have died anyway. But this young man got a chance.

@@heatherjunker967 - I'm a medical ASL interpreter and YES, this is exactly right. Ontop of the medical ASL and medical vocabulary, it's important to understand some other factors such as medical hierarchy, medical procedures for sterilization, and for a Deaf surgeon, it would also be very important for the interpreter to have a great rapport with the Deaf surgeon, likely becoming her dedicated interpreter.

Yes. You look at the mouth of the person speaking and use peripheral vision to read signs. That’s why the interpreter was standing behind and to the side of the speaker. There are subtle conscious and subconscious expressions from the speaker that aren’t conveyed through the interpreter.

@rosielass459

Plastic face masks do not fog up due to how they are made. I believe they have small holes or venting space. They are used often for instances like this with the deaf and HoH. I wish they were more readily available as I found pandemic years difficult for me with my deafness.

In the army, we would put either alcohol or oil on the lenses of our eye protection, oil works best as it is more hydrophobic than alcohols and doesn't evaporate away as readily, though the alcohol would still leave behind a residue that would ideally prevent water from sticking to the surface, but i highly doubt they put that much thought into this

I think a fair amount of interpreters are also volunteers. There are other accessibility tools that Wilder uses throughout the show. Later in the show, Max also learns sign language so he could probably interpret.
