My grandmother is a December baby, and she's the closest to a mother I've ever known...I grew up on Anastasia, so Anya and her bond with her own grandma would always remind me of what I have with my Gram. My sisters and I even sang this for her birthday, once. It'll always remind me of my beloved Gram, even long after she's gone... ❤ ADDENDUM: I've been HORRIBLY sick, today, so thank you for this, Caleb...you did a lovely job... 🥰

Gleb walked through the lonely streets that night. The winds were relentless and the cold was as heartless as the NKVD's glare. Fortunately, he was one of them. There was something odd about this hour as if the angels themselves were descending upon the earth besides the snowflakes. The old Winter Palace remained dormant ever since the fall of the monarchy, nothing left to scavenge except for old trophies so one can either claim they worked for the Romanovs or stormed its halls when the true revolution began. Nonetheless, its shadow still loomed over the rest of Leningrad, a reminder of a time when there was no such thing as a Soviet. He was suddenly taken aback when someone slammed into him, but he got ahold of the stranger and found a scared girl in his arms. "Slow down, it's slippery on nights like these." "I'll be careful next time," She replied before taking a few steps away from him, "I just got some work I need to do." The young man froze in place, his blood feeling drained while studying her features. There was something recognizable about her, but he couldn't understand why. Yet, he took the moment to regain his composure while keeping his own thoughts to himself. "Sir, are you okay?" "Yes, I'm fine. Just need to walk it off. My office is not far from here." She nodded her head and walked off, unaware of the secret policeman the stranger ran into. Wherever she went, Gleb quietly prayed for her sake. He had every right to arrest her, but the times had changed since those days. "Good luck, your highness." . . . I think I got too much time on my hands.

Sadly, the truth behind her story is much more grim. I can't remember the exact details, but according to some accounts of revolutionaries, they had seized the young princess and another member of her family, taken them to a remote place, shot and burried them there. When scientists searched for their bodies, they found them at the exact spot they were told to look for. DNA testing brought the unmistakable proof; they were members of the Romanov family, and it was confirmed that one of them was a girl of Anastasia's age and height - the young Russian princess had been a victim of the revolution...

I’m glad to see I’m not the only person who imagines this as the prince Alexei singing as he watches and dances with the ghosts of his sisters, and finally his mother. Especially here, Caleb’s awesome belting serves really well as sounding almost agonized and desperate (much more than the original, I’d say) for the life he never really got to have thanks to his illness. Good stuff, my man.

As a child of, say, 9 or 10, I watched the film Anastasia for the first time. I remember liking it, but nothing about its content in particular. Years went by, and as I was maybe 27, I watched it again with my girlfriend. It was like watching it for the first time again, as it was so long ago. Then, this song came on... And it struck me like a hammer! Although I had only heard it once, the melody had left an undiscovered mark on my mind that made itself forcefully known at that moment, and I sat in awe as the scene went by. I only noticed that tears were rolling down my cheeks when my girlfriend asked me why I was crying. I could not even give a proper answer, other than "I don't know...this song just got to me...".
