They're "shinigami" which people normally think of as a Reaper but that name literally translates to "death god" so I think calling them gods is about right. I really like how Caleb sounds, his entire lyrics are about being bored and seeing the humans as simply a source for his own life span so it makes sense that his voice would reflect that he doesn't really feel much for them as a whole. While Anna sounds enthusiastic and curious about them, it's a nice contrast especially because the characters they represent are kind of the opposite of how they're acting.

Anna as Rem is fascinated with humans and is hopeful, which is shown via the vibrancy in her lyrics. Ryuk isn’t 100% a psychopath. He’s driven by being a horrifying death god. He’s seen so much death he’s desensitized. I say that purely because he’s really protective of his humans, he seems to cherish them a lot. There was also a situation with another Shinigami where their book was in a bad guy’s hands and it was totally horrified and Ryuk was like “hey man it’s okay we’ll get you your book back,”. So whilst he does have a cynical/out of his mind side, Caleb wouldn’t lean into that so much.

This version and the original version somehow have a very different vibe, especially the original Ryuk Voice vs. Caleb. I think the original sounded more like he is making fun of humans while Caleb sounds more disinterested.

I love Caleb's music and I've been waiting forever for anyone to cover songs from this musical, so it kind of hurts to say this, but this wasn't one of his better showings in my eyes. In the original song, Ryuk's lines were sung with a mocking intonation, which I don't think Caleb captured all that well in this cover. Instead, he seems to be singing his line with a somber tone, which was more Rem's thing in the original song; which is the whole point of the song, that while Ryuk and Rem describe humanity's faults as "They're Only Human," each of them means diffferent things by that. Don't get me wrong, this isn't necessarily a bad cover, but I think the direction Caleb took with his parts makes it lose a bit of what made the original work so well, which is especially disappointing since I've seen him do better.

Yeah, it's definitely not the same interpretation as the musical. I feel like Caleb went for more of the "too bored to put in any energy" instead of the "antsy bored slowly becoming interested" like in the musical. I listened to it again with that distinction in mind, and that helps a bit, but I agree that it's not the best possible, especially paired with Anna's energy and emotion. I remember thinking Anna would be a terrific Rem, but I think Caleb would be a better Light than a Ryuk. (also self-plug I'm working on covers of at least four songs from this musical because I love it sm. Most likely to get either The Game Begins or Stalemate done first, but I also want to do Where is the Justice and Hurricane.)
