Okay this is the best song in the entire fandom for a few reasons. A. The text setting places teh emphasis on the down beat and for the most part how you would pronounce words when speaking. B. They arent singing the melody, it's a rhyme that allows the music to exist as harmony while people sing along with it not to it. C. It's not amazing, like it's very flat but its also not meant to be, the entire purpose of this prologue is to establish the setting and tone. What better way to establish a setting and tone than with an easy to identify and remember nursery rhyme that implies both the far past and the simplicity of the music. It's a pretty well known fact that as the game progresses the music changes from 8bit to midi to an actual guitar which tells the complexity that is happening. The lyrics do the exact same and that's rare in this musical format of this game which is depressing.

Frisks gender is left open to interpretation meaning if someone sees frisk as a boy then frisk becomes a he, and if someone sees frisk as a girl then frisk becomes she. and should someone else see frisk as just frisk then frisk is frisk. let people call frisk what they feel frisk is to them personally, they are not trying to shove this thought down others throats, so why correct them. ?? The "Oops dropped your heart be careful in the dark" part could have a double meaning, literally because of Asgores law about humans and collecting the souls and the soul appearing as a heart which breaks if Frisk is killed, but also as a metaphorical "what you are in the dark"/ "he who fights monsters", kind of thing. Frisk doesn't start out evil (and even feels bad about hitting the training dummy at first), but their soul becomes increasingly corrupted and broken on genocide path to the point they no longer care, and enjoy it in the end. Asgore won't even recognise Frisk as human anymore when you meet him towards the end of genocide. Frisk is still Frisk (despite everything) at the end of pacifist, but has lost control and themselves completely at the end of genocide, and the damage is done, as doing pacifist after genocide backfires horribly on Frisk, the monsters, and possibly humanity too. The "will you spare them, run or fight? line could also represent the three paths the player can take. Also the music in that part along with the quieter singing makes it sound kind of ominous compared to the rest of the song.

Rain-dancer Or the "Oops, dropped your heart" part could mean when Frisk goes to battle mode as well. Cause Frisk literally drops their heart (which is their soul) and that is where you can fight the monster of spare them, thus the next words "Be careful in the dark", like what you said, meaning be careful of the Genocide, like what you said. Or it could mean the battery itself, cause your soul gets into a dark box where you need to dodge their attacks. "Someone might take it, break it apart.", this could mean that you might die, as the monsters want to take your soul, but it ends up well... breaking. "Trouble on the left, trouble on the right", this could be talking about their attacks, as they attack you, with bullets coming from left and right. "Will you spare them, to or fight? There are three bottoms that can defeat the monsters. The Fight button, where you attack the monsters. The run option and the spare option in the Mercy button. Although, Run and Spare can only work depending on the monster, fight is the only option where you can choose freely. So it's a double meaning, pretty much.

The line "down where the monsters go" makes me think about Chara a lot. When they fell they wanted to probably end their life. Something about them made other humans call them a monster. So if they didn't die from the fall, or monsters didn't kill them. They became one of the monsters. They literally went down where the other monsters go.

I found this like two years ago, I had never played undertale and only heard a little bit about it, now two years later, I did a true pacifist route in two days, am currently fighting (and struggling) sans in a genocide route, and have completed deltarune. I'm sad I didn't play it when the fandom was extremely alive (gotta catch up with *all* the au's lmao) but i'm so happy to have played it.
