FIRST TIME WATCHING Once Upon a Time in Hollywood was an awesome experience and I cannot believe Quentin Tarantino is only making one more movie. But you can be sure that I will be reacting to that one when he finally makes it. Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt make for an iconic duo and his handling of the Charles Manson Murders involving Sharon Tate (brilliantly played by Margot Robbie) was such a welcome rewrite of history. I loved the fairy tale reality of this beautiful movie.

This is my favorite Tarantino movie. It's a work of art. The level of detail to recreate the period is insane. The scene between the little girl and Caprio's character is one of the best moments in the movie, that young actor has so much talent.

My mother’s high school sweetheart at the time was Steven Parent, Manson’s followers first victim. Her Homecoming picture with him is in the book, “Helter Skelter”. I took her to see this movie but thankfully they left him out of the movie, I don’t think she could have handled it.

lol when I saw this movie in the theatres for the first time during the last scene I literally thought, "oh yeah, this is a tarantino movie" lmao but the ending immediately made sense to me given his work, especially when the final end title popped up. its a fairy tale where the good guys live happily ever after. that's what tarantino does best - re writes history the way he would have wanted it to happen (django, inglorious, etc)

I think "Once Upon A Time" in this context is referencing both Fairy tales (this is a Hollywood fairy tale) and the Sergio Leone's "Once Upon A Time" movies. (Spaghetti westerns are one of his big obsessions)

I enjoyed your reaction, especially since unlike several clueless reactors you are actually familiar with Charles Manson and the Tate murders and understand the historical significance that weaves in and out of this story. I personally thought (judging from the trailer) that I would hate this movie--the last thing I wanted to see was yet another Manson family yarn. But I ended up loving it and watch it at least once a month. The end sequence is such a wonderful wish fulfillment fantasy for those of us who lived through the Manson era and find Tarantino's version of that night to be very cathartic. It also helps to be a big fan of 50s-60s TV westerns, spaghetti westerns, Matt Helm movies, etc. and to be able to catch most of the fun references Tarantino has packed this movie with. Just a trivia note: the hippie girl seen selling the LSD cigarette to Brad Pitt played Uma Thurman's little girl B.B. in "Kill Bill, Vol. 2."

@@KazzyCreates Charles Manson never killed anyone, and it was accepted at the trial that he never full out ordered the murders. He was convicted of first degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder, based solely on his behaviour in court. Just saying.

Yeah, I watched one reactor who wasn't born in this country react to this and it all went over her head. People really need to think about which movies they recommend to whom. Tarantino recently said the scene at the Spahn Ranch "achieves terror" for the audience. Frankly, it doesn't achieve much more than bewilderment for those unfamiliar with the Manson "family." I personally found the scene to be slightly suspenseful. But like you I thought the climax was deliciously cathartic, which I didn't know I needed.

Martin Larsen Saying he was convicted based solely on how he acted in court is an opinion, not a fact. The jurors who convicted him contrary to what you might think were not stupid, ignorant men and women who would base their decision on his court behavior. Several of them were interviewed in the years since the trial and one of the youngest jurors not that long ago. They were sequestered for 8 months while they took in testimony, physical evidence, cross examinations and legal arguments. You watering their decision down to “Charlie shaved his head and acted weird so they convicted him” is extremely unfair. Now that said, it certainly didn’t help Charlie’s defense when the jury saw exactly how robotically devoted Susan, Pat, and Leslie acted toward him in the courtroom, with Manson orchestrating regular outbursts and protests by all.

He was convicted of first degree murder based solely on the fact that if you order your obedient followers to commit murder and they do, then you are just as guilty of first degree murder regardless of whether or not you directly performed the act.

This movie became one of my favorites Tarantino's movie... the way that they recreated Hollywood in the 60's .. all the places.. the clothes.. the songs! everything here is perfect. Cliff is such a great character, everybody wants to be Cliff or have a friend like him... and that final scene. The stuntman did all the hard work then the main star comes out and gets the final big shot. Pure genius. Amazing reaction as always!! ♥

It was like watching ghost speak and how the music comes in and the camera over the trees to see that Sharon is still alive and they go inside . Yes, they were going to "Terry's" house. Terry Melcher (Doris Day's son) was a music producer who pissed off Manson. He rented his home to the Polanski's. (He was thought of as the real target, not Roman or Sharon. Terry was dating Candice Bergen at the time, so Sharon could have been mistaken for her.)

I've read more than one book on the Manson murders by people who were there at the time, as well as from FBI profilers who investigated it and interviewed him, plus viewed scores of documentaries/interviews both network and independently produced over the last 40 years. As far as what Manson knew, or didn't know, well his versions always seem to change as often as the weather.

The last film I saw in a theater before COVID hit-and the first time I’d been in a theater in several years. But I knew this would be special, a MOVIE movie for those who love movies and historical eras-and I was not mistaken. As others said, a work of art, from top to bottom---set design, music, mood, sensibilities. Not sure how Tarantino did it, but he managed to perfectly capture that transition period in Hollywood from the old school to “New Hollywood” in the late ‘60s, when cowboy TV shows were getting tired, and suddenly were mixed in with counterculture stuff, and how those worlds clashed. People who get hung up on the history totally miss Tarantino’s point: It’s “once upon a time”---not history. He also made this clear by making the two protagonists---Cliff and Rick---pretty much the only two fictional characters, and the ones who change history in the end. One last historical point: Cliff wasn’t in danger from Charlie at the ranch. The dangerous one was Tex Watson, a cold-blooded killer (whom Brandy, ahem, circumcises at the end). Charlie only participated in two killings during the famous spree-but if Tex Watson’s horse would have galloped a little faster, Cliff likely would have been shot to death.

Trivia: George Spahn was originally going to be played by Burt Reynolds, but he passed away before filming. So Bruce Dern got the role. Also the FBI episode that they watched with Rick Dalton's role was actually played by Burt Reynolds. One of his first acting roles.

I wonder if this film takes place in the same universe as Inglorious Basterds. Rick mentions that Cliff is a “war hero”, and he is pretty much the perfect age to have been in Aldo in that film. Also, when Rick burns the nazis, it could be an interpretation of that universe’s historical events, similar to how in our timeline people made war films in the sixties that were a bit inaccurate. I just love that Tarantino’s main objective in this film was to mend the legacies of the victims, which were pretty much ruined by the Manson family. Edit: Also the scene where Cliff goes to Spahn Ranch was a bit of fictional revenge for Shorty Shea, a stuntman who was murdered by Manson, Steve Grogan and Tex Watson when he tried to help George Spahn, thinking the Mansons were taking advantage of the elderly man. In the scene Cliff beats up Steve Grogan.

FYI In real life there was a stuntman named Shorty Shea who went to Spahn Ranch and was killed by the Manson clan. So seeing Cliff drive off was a huge relief. Just like in the end when Sharon isn't murdered; a Once Upon a Time moment in a Once Upon a Time movie. It is a story in a story, known as an inclusio, a literary construct. Also Cliff has a flashback in a flashback, very meta. There is soooo much in this movie that relates to and says about the time and era it's too much for a comment section. I grew up there and then so the music, the streets, the stores, the restaurants was heart warming.

BRILLIANT movie; Tarantino is a genius; I LOVE his use of the correct detailing of the time's music; fashion; cars; down to the way people talked and use of language. We were born in the same year so that probably explains the appreciation for the music etc of the 70's. Agree - Robert Redford could easily be Brad's real-life dad. Tarantino said that Pitt and di Caprio bring the same magic as Paul Newman and Robert Redford did to the screen.

I liked your reaction quite a lot. You know film stuff and you gave the movie, also for your audience, the time it needs to develop. You just don´t review that kind of a movie in ten minutes, at least not in the format chosen. And that scene at the end, it´s just fricken hilarious. Subbed.

Great reaction! I got a bit bored when I watched the film for the first time. But because of the hysterical end fight scene, I watched it again. And then I liked some other scenes too. So soon after that, I watched it again. And I started to love the characters and the whole vibe......Now I love every minute of the movie and I can´t get enough of it. I like how you were so stressed out about Rick not gonna help Cliff with the fighting and then laughed so hard when you saw Rick with the flamethrower.

If you like Timothy Olyphant and Westerns, you should check out the series Deadwood. It's epic. Also...he transitioned from Deadwood, to Justified which was an FX Series where he plays a U.S. Marshall stationed in Kentucky. Hands down one of my top 5 series of all time.

Was looking at recent reactions and realized the pilot of the TV series Lancer (68-69) was incorporated into the storyline. Actors James Stacy played the gunslinger son Johnny Madrid and Wayne Maunder played the other son, Luke Perry's character. Stacy and Maunder have passed but James Stacy not long after the series was involved in a motorcycle accident with a drunk driver which killed his girlfriend and caused him to lose his arm and leg, and no doubt altered his career.

The guy that played Alan Kincaid (the guy interviewing Rick and Cliff), is a great character actor, but I forget his real name. Man he pulled of that 1969 interviewer thing perfectly, the voice, the cheesy laughing, etc. Very funny seen!

I really liked the bit at the end when Rick is talking to the guy next door about this unbelievably crazy thing that had just happened to them. If only things had gone that way in our world. The stuff with Rick struggling on-set was great. I pretty much punched the air when things eventually went right for him there!

saw this flick opening night packed house, lots of talking before it all began during the trailers, and u could just feel that the crowd was legit excited because of the anticipation everyone laughed where they needed to laugh, awwed when they needed to awe, and at the very end, most of the guys were like WHAT?! or like OH SHIT! such a crowd pleasing flick

The last girl that you mentioned at 5:20 is Margaret Qualley and her mom (in real life) is Andie MacDowell, the actress who was in Groundhog Day and other movies :) Timothy Olyphant was also great in the movie Gone in 60 Seconds with Nicolas Cage! :)

The Bruce Dern character was originally supposed to be played by Burt Reynolds, but he ended up passing away before production started.
