I know this is late, but that's what I loved about Rumple. He never lost his personality or power when he chose the good side. Some shows would've nerfed his power so much when he turned over a new leaf. But good or bad, Rumple was never one you wanted to cross.

This scene is why Rumpel becoming the dark one again was the worst mistake this show EVER made. This redemption arc was so powerful. It feels anticlimactic when they undo it, especially since he falls back into temptation off-screen! I guess I do kinda like the way he ends up going as well though - he ends up doing the right thing on his own terms eventually, which makes the overall message of his character "no one can MAKE you a hero; you have to figure that out on your own". And I do kinda appreciate that.

@@fmthebaron that doesn't make sense there is only one dark power. The power is fused with that of merlin + any unique abilities the dark ones acquired through out their lives. Its not like its power times the number of dark ones. Also yes season 5 was promising but it was shit just like season 7.

First, he kept losing those he loved even while being good, while the power kept with him no matter what. Secondly, he probably also took the power back because it would have just escaped instead of just being destroyed. Emma & Co's plan was stupid, you can't just destroy the Darkness, nor can you snuff out all the Light, it would have just taken a new form and been back to square one so Rumple took advantage of the situation and took tge Power back for himself but also stacked the game and save them all (again) from their own stupidity.

There are people in real life with big difficulties of change just like him. It's understandable if you like psychology. I know people like him, including myself sometimes. Also, Rumple is very complexed since he was a child. We don't know everything about his past, but I think that what we know already is enough to comprehend his oscillations. Maybe the writers ran out of ideas, but I like it anyway. In my opinion, this thing just completed his complexity as a character. P.S. I'm not trying to say that he is not responsable for his actions.

Rumple is an addict. He knows intellectually, what the right decision. He knows the kind of person he is supposed to be, the kind of person he deep down wants to be for his family. But his Darkness is his nature; even in Season 7, he dies believing that he won't ever pull away from it, that he can't ever be good enough. Ironically, it is that sacrifice of his own happiness that ends up proving him worthy. But simply *wanting* to be a hero, isn't enough, any more than wanting to be a good person is enough. You have to put the work in. And Rumple, ultimately, was an extremely powerful sorcerer. And a very very weak man. It took a lifetime going cold turkey from magic to even put a dent in that.

Actually Rumple was the only consistent character on this show. An addict who fights for those he loves. The others keeps lying to each other and themselves and ignoring what they don't wanna hear or face and prefer to use Rumple as their scapegoat even though they are the one messing around. Even Belle lost sight of herself, at first she was the good character who fought for those who needed her help the most (like Rumple) then she became far too obsessed about being a hero and got dragged down by their idea of 'Rumple is pure evil' and became so paranoid that she kept endangering herself and their baby. Her 'friends' imprisoned her, tried to kill her multiple times, used her as blackmail, did everything in their power to keep her in that sleeping curse even though they knew she was pregnant (and the side effects of the sleeping curse), never helped her when she asked for help, enslaved/abandoned her husband when he needed help, and eventually tried to kill their son instead of trying to reach out to him. And those are the people she decided to trust over Rumple who kept fighting her safety and their son's.

Couldn't this just mean Rumple is a son of the Pendragon line? The original Sword in the a Stone was meant to be pulled by the rightful heir to the throne (think magical paternity test). In fact, the Sword in the Stone and Excaliber are two separate swords. Arthur pulled the former to prove he was the rightful king, and after he broke it in a fight Merlin told him to ask the Lady in the Lake for a new one.

I believe the sword can also be pulled by someone pure of heart. When rumple was dethroned (for lack of better term) from being the dark one his darkness went away with it, leaving his heart quite literally pure.

Well depending on the myth, Merlin just enchanted it so that only British royalty could draw it. Since Rumple was at one point the self-appointed king of his lands I suppose it counts. Or more likely the writers wanted an excuse for him to say the 'Hero' line and just ignored the mythology.

Good show but I really hate it when people mistake the Sword in the Stone for Excalibur. That was Caliburn, Excalibur was gifted to Merlin by The Lady in the Lake.

@@paulwagner688 No Caliburn was the sword in the stone, it's what gave Arthur the backing he needed to claim his place on the throne however, it was just a well-made sword enchanted by Merlin it didn't make Arthur unbeatable just damn close to it. One of the Geas placed on it was that its wielder could commit no dishonor, during a tournament a knight who had just defeated Arthur in the melee said something really insulting to him, Arthur was so enraged he just turned and swung at the guy. Problem was since the guy was facing away, technically that was a dishonorable attack from behind and Caliburn shattered on impact. Well, this was around the time the Saxons were invading and since their army was so massive Arthur knew Camelot didn't have a chance without an equalizer like Caliburn. So Merlin went to Nimue The Lady in the Lake who was also a Queen of the Fay and asked for a weapon that could defeat the Saxons, so Nimue gave a sword forged by the Fay to unbreakable and unbeatable, The Sword of Promised Victory whose wielder could not be defeated in battle by any being in creation human or not. Excalibur. When she gave it to him Nimue bound Merlin an unbreakable geas that when Arthur no longer needed it to save Britain, then he would bring it back. When Merlin returned he found that the Knights of Camelot were getting their shit pushed in by the Saxons and it looked like they weren't big fans of lube. so he gave the sword to Arthur and he proceeded to pretty much solo the entire army including cutting the hand off the Saxon War-Chief(I'm guessing they meant Jarl but this is a very old legend so some translation problems are normal.) a guy who had just defeated Lancelot in a single blow(side note, Lancelot was from the area where Nimue lived that why he was called DuLac it means 'of the Lake'). After that Merlin was supposed to bring the sword back but he was Merlin, figuring out a way around the geas was easy. Caliburn was reforged into Clarent and given to Galahad. Well eventually the Mordred crap all happened and since Arthur blamed himself for it and knew that Mordred couldn't beat while he had Excalibur he told Merlin to take it back to Nimue and he went to fight Mordred wielding his spear Rhongomyniad. Merlin waited until the battle was over and then took the sword and Arthur's corpse to The Lady in the Lake, she took Excalibur back and since she had heard of how great a king Arthur was, she decided to take his body with her to Avalon, the home of the Fay so that he could rest at peace forever. There's a lot of references to the story in the myths of the Tuatha De Danan if I remember right.

@@paulwagner688 Oh I don't doubt that your correct about the translation, but keep in mind that this myth has been translated through a bunch of different languages before the English got ahold of it and one of those was Welsh. Enough said right there,. My main point was that the Sword in the Stone and Excalibur were two different swords. Maybe you're right and one of them had a different name. Who knows? But every historical text I've read that mentions the fact that there were two swords, calls the Sword in the Stone Caliburn. Maybe one of them was actually Clarent because I've seen the name Galantine a few times but I can't find anything that states who wielded it or where it came from. Like I said, lots of translations and lots of different versions.

Maybe they did it on purpose? They're not exactly trying to stay accurate to the fairytales here. Why would they bother wasting time explaining what the fuck Caliburn is (because let's be real, most people who aren't particularly well versed with that story only know Excalibur) when they can just say "it's Excalibur" and it changes literally nothing in the story they're telling? There's no point, except to please the few people like you who this actually annoys. And that's not worth dedicating time to when most people are gonna be fine with it.
