On May 23rd the two shoots were pruned into one creating a trunk for the new vine as it reached up to the growing wire.

Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge, and doing it in such an uncomplicated manner. We're following your methods step by step. Got our end posts in today! I've got several books but nothing beats these videos.

Hi bentaprop Thanks very much for your message, I sure appreciate it. I am very happy about the award, but it really is just the grapes, it is a good place to grow Cabernet. thanks again Dave

Hello Aart Happy to hear you like the videos. When you get your vineyard planted, if you like send me a picture I would like to see it. Thanks for watching, Dave

Yes, yes, yes, you spoke of the amount of irrigation for young plants , 2 to 3 gallons every three days progressing to more water over a longer span, most youtube videos say 2 inches of water a week, which means nothing to me. And the soil , I was worried that my plant was planted in too organic rich soil, but from your video I see that's not a worry. . Illustrating the tenical toping the leaf to verify good hydration was helpful

Hi Alibi Very nice to hear from you, thanks for your message. Often the mistake people make is planting something they like verses a variety that is well suited for their area. That being said, where you are, either should turn out fine. Zin can be a little more difficult though, I have a One Acre Zin vineyard that I make wine form too. Head trained vines, which as you said may not ripen like the cab. See if you can find a Zin grower near by and see how the fruit turns out for them. Thanks Dave

Great videos, really helpful and educational. A thing I’ve been wondering in relation to cane pruning: Would you also cut the 1st year plant when it reaches a certain height to favor the trunk development as you show here with your spur pruning plants? Or just let I grow, cut extra shots and then winter prune it to the desired number of buds.

Very much like you direct personal style. Measured my bit of hillside in Calistoga today, +/- 5000 sq ft. Maybe another 1000 sq ft near the house. Two of my neighbors grow Cabernet. I drink a lot of the Bear Flag Inn cab. Notice that its maturation varies greatly from year to year. But I’m a Zin lover. What to do, stick with the neighborhood variety, or strike out in a different direction?

Thanks very much. It is a very pretty place with the vineyards of the stags leap district on the hills behind. Thanks for your comment Dave
