One Body: Preserving the Legacy of Albert Evans

While searching for solos to present during the 2020/21 season, Pacific Northwest Ballet Artistic Director Peter Boal was inspired to revive a solo choreographed by his friend and fellow dancer at New York City Ballet, Albert Evans. In the process of recovering this solo, almost lost but for one worn-out VHS tape, PNB had the opportunity to revisit the choreography and legacy of Albert Evans. Wendy Whelan, Aesha Ash, Carla Körbes, Peter Boal, and Christopher D'Ariano speak about the brilliant life and work of Evans in this short documentary. Thank you so much for doing this!!! I have been so intrigued by Albert because NYCB ballerinas were always talking about him and saying how much they loved him. Sadly, I only became aware of him after he had passed. I asked Megan Fairchild to do a video about Albert, as part of her youtube video series, and she kindly obliged, and now you've done this! I'm so grateful to know more about him, because there is so little available about him online. Thank you a million times.

Albert and I were regularly picked up in a blue vw bug and taken to class by a wonderful, caring ballet/modern dance teacher named Annette Lewis. She somehow found Albert, me ( Cedric and Brian)in south Atlanta who didn’t have rides and could not afford dance classes and gave us all free lessons. She did so much more, no one even knows. As a fellow peer and friend to see Albert unfold as an 11 year old young dancer was amazing! You should have seen him! He was special right from the start and was a dear friend of mine and many others in our small troupe. His talent was apparent from the very beginning, his humor infectious and his kindness endless. We danced together for about 3 or 4 years until Annette disbanded our dance company and arranged for us to dance on full scholarships elsewhere. She took care of us. Albert, Brian and Cedric were scooped up at Terpsichore. God bless Annette Lewis for her grass roots passion and commitment to young dancers back in the day. I miss Albert and thank you for this wonderful tribute to his amazing dance career and life.

Thank you for this wonderful piece! I have very fond memories of seeing Albert Evans dance at Saratoga in the early 1990s. Red Angels! Still one of my favorite ballets. I was so very sad to hear of his passing; he was gone way too soon.
