Per usual Octavia Spencer knocked it out the park with her performance. Blair Underwood showed us he could still get it😏. However, I greatly disliked how the film used colorism as the dividing & driving point for the fued between Walker & Malone. #1 Malone willing hired Walker as a sales rep for her company. Malone taught Walker about her products & how to sale them. #2 Malone was entering millionaire status when Walker joined her company. #3 After a short time working at Malone's company Walker disappeared & popped up in a neighboring state selling hair care products similar to Malone's. That is the real fued between Malone & Walker. It had nothing to do with colorism or competition. Unfortunately, modern-day historians love to dismiss the idea that Walker stole from Malone. Or historians will call it a misconception that Walker stole from Malone because Black women were apparently using the same ingredients for their personal hair care routines. Whatever the case Malone thought Walker stole her products because she began focusing on copyright & trademarking her products after Walker left the company

Slavery. The closer one was to whiteness..... the better the treatment and tolerance by whites. Not to mention.....mulatto blacks were the product of slave masters raping black slave women that they owned. So not only were these mulattos lighter... but often they were the offspring of the slave masters themselves (children and grandchildren etc)....all resulting in their much better treatment. The offspring were STILL treated as slaves but often transfered to "in-house" work rather than "field" work. In house work...away from the harsh sun was easier. And because they were in close proximity to whites... they were put in better clothes as well. So.... this perception begins that lighter skin gets you better treatment. It's used to create a divide between the slaves. Because mulattos were seen as racially ambiguous......exotic and beautiful... the women were often gifted to other men as "concubines".....so when the mulattos themselves were raped and had offspring... their kids were even more fair......fair enough to pass as white and escape slavery. And many did escape slavery by passing. However the divide just grew deeper.... especially with Jim Crow. The blacker you were, the the uglier and more violent your treatment. The lighter you were... the better the treatment. This is most pronounced among the women. Because today.....among men of MOST races.... the lighter women of the race are most desired. The perceived color of beauty, higher class, wealth and purity is WHITE...... the color of the colonizer. Subconciously it's REALLY the color of safety. To be black was to be a slave. To be white was to be safe from slavery. To be black was to be a target for violence to be white was to be free from violence. To be black was to receive unfair treatment. To be white provided preferential treatment. The divide among blacks relative to color was created by white people through slavery, segregation and Jim Crow where better treatment could be had the closer the person was to whiteness.

Yep. I'm lighter skinned too with light hazel eyes and I've dealt with the hatred too from other black people. I've even been told by them that I'm not black. The only thing I hate is that films like this portray things as if it's the lighter skinned blacks perpetrating the hatred just like they do to white people. It's always the white person as the villain.

Most things you see on shows and movies are fiction, even if they say it's based on a true story. The keywords there are "based on" meaning they can manipulate it in any way they want which is why they never just say it is a true story.

She ends up making her own line, and achieving incredible success, ultimately becoming a millionaire. Madam has a lot of obstacles as a black person and a woman, she has to overcome some great hurdles and changes the hearts of people along the way. She has a noble heart, and wants to do the right thing. There's some dramas along the way with betrayal and secrets and family and friends and her daughter and husband, but that is the general storyline from start to finish. In the end she prevails but it wasn't an easy path.

While growing up there was a darker black girl who was always angry; just mad all the time, always getting into trouble. I just stayed out her way, but the light skinned kids got the worst of her anger. Idky, but this one light skinned girl, she had a large, dark birthmark on the side of her face, she was a beautiful girl tho. The darker girl always messed w her and one day caught her in the bathroom and it was bad. The light skinned girl never came back to school after that. I felt so bad for her, but also wondered why the other girl was so angry w her, seemingly for no reason. I hope they both overcame their trauma.

The movie shows how they are both victims of patriarchy. Being hold back by men. For different reasons.
@alittlebirbie
@alittlebirbie 2 ай бұрын
This isnt about "men" its about colorism and biased towards mixed race lighter skinned black women. They feel superior to fully black women and therefore dont even want to associate. As a result the shorter woman later goes on to advocate for black womens hair care, with genuine results not pushing a narrative that only mixed women and other races can have long healthy hair but that black women deserve to be represented on those grounds and fighting a stereotype that plagues the community even now.
