One last thing: I dont have problems with movies tackling colorism, but when they tackle it, the dark skinned woman is always overweight and the light skinned woman is dainty and cute. To me, this promotes colorism more. They also show the dark skinned woman behaving masculine and the light skinned woman as fierce but desirable and feminine, which furthers the stereotypes more too.

It is disturbing. After seeing a doc of her story and then thinking about MCJW's story, there's a bigger picture. Black women...black PEOPLE were doing our thing but we don't hear much about it. They make it as if there was only one. Instead of all of these slave movies they need to start pushing all of the black Wallstreets of the midwest during that time, the wealth of black folks in southern cities like Wilmington NC during the Reconstruction period, more about the successful black folk of Harlem back then, etc. This information has been missing from the big screens for a reason, but thank God for YT. And if Netflix is brave enough, they can be the leaders to push these types of documentaries/movies out.

So, here's the thing. The person you refer to as Annie Turnbo, a proprietor and educator is more commonly known as Annie Malone. The first Black female millionaire who earned her fortune by selling Black hair care products she invented. After establishing her career, she went on to open a cosmetology school which was also attached to a hotel and uniform manufacturer. She also founded an orphanage which was renamed for her after her death. You are correct, Madam Walker was employed by her. This in no way diminishes the accomplishments of Madam Walker but it is, as you have noted, important to be as accurate as possible.

UNPOPULAR OPINION: I enjoyed the series! I loved how they showed that the road to success will never be easy and will require sacrifices but you can't lose sight of your goals. I also liked how even though it showed the lighter skinned woman more desirable etc it also showed how she was not being taken seriously and only being seen as just a pretty face or a prize even to her mother which did bother her although she often used it to her advantage. So it was good to see things from the other perspective. However, it made me want to research more about the characters and I ended up not liking how Annie Malone was portrayed as I became more aware of her story and how much she contributed to the black community, I wondered how her family felt. When I discovered many more unfactual things it kinda made me look at the series sideways. When people make stories "inspired by" I really wish they would stick as close to the original story as possible. If the colorism thing was not apart of Madam Cj walkers and Annie Malone's story then they shouldn't have made it an issue. But I guess "inspired by and based on" are two different things so we cant be too upset about it? 🤷‍♀️

Why cant they ever tell black stories that are AT LEAST 50% accurate? Like, it's not that hard. I know these movies are made for entertainment but if you read Madam CJ's real life story, it's actually ALREADY very interesting and entertaining WITHOUT having to manipulate the story. They do this a lot. I liked Hidden Figures, for instance, but was so mad when I later learned they invented a whole white man/savior who didnt exist IRL (Kiefer Sutherland's chatacter). Theres one thing to adjust the story in some areas so it translates on screen, but you literally invented a whole man who is a main supporting character? I will never get over that. To be fair, they change other stories too like the Steve Jobs movie but they usually do that so it can be more entertaining. In black movies, there seems to be an agenda.

But i also don't like how she made him feel small. She was quite selfish on that part. His husband supported her. He even agreed transferring city only to be stepped down by her wife. He was basically excluded in the company when they could have been working together. That was one reason why he changed. But yes, that does not explain his disloyalty and adultery issue. He is still wrong. Also, Sarah, seemed quite not thankful of annie. She seemed she has no sense of obligation for the help she owed annie. It was annie who helped her from the beginning. But what happened in the movie is she even stole and competed with annie. Which for me is quite troublesome. Seems like she has no debt of gratitute towards people who helped her. I don't know if this is because there are a lot of changes and lies in the way thw movie was made, but at the end of the movie, sarah for me seemed so selfish and unfair towards her husband and annie.

To falsely state that Madame C.J. Walker was the 1st Black Women entrepreneur is in correct. Entrepreneur Mrs. Annie Minerva Turnbo Malone was a MILLIONAIRE prior to Madame C.J. The title says “INSPIRED”. Inspired by the the life story of MCJW. If the title was “based on a true story” or another similar title, than I can understand your scrutiny. As an African American I walked away from this movie empowered by MCJW perseverance and sacrifices. Two of the biggest motifs that I got from watching this series is “hard work beats talent and beauty”, along with “self-worth”. I do not think this series creates a space to degrade dark skin women or pin light skin against dark skinned. Sarah wanted to be the spokes person and saleswomen for Annie and was not afforded the opportunity. in the end MCJW not only created her own company but made her adopted grand daughter of dark complexion the face of the company. Setting and creating new beauty standards. Letting the future generations know not to follow trends instead you creative them, know your worth, and beauty comes in many forms (e.g. the series exalting the African American community in Harlem for their diverse looks that challenged the southern status quo beauty standards). I do not think the additional fictitious story lines within this series hindered MCJW’s legacy. It’s not possible. MCJW is solidified in American History as a entrepreneur, activist, millionaire, and so much more to not of the African American community but the world. Now what did hurt the movie was Tiffany Haddish. My opinion

Right! Just like in the movie Hidden Figures, which was also a phenomenal movie, but too had fictitious parts. The times we see Taraji running around and across the buildings just to go to the colored bathroom was entirely made up as well. Katherine Johnson said so in an interview that she did not have to do that. She just simply went to the restroom in her work area. Parts made up simply for dramatic effect, but did that make the movie any less good because it was untrue? People really need to lighten up and quit picking apart stuff just because.

But that’s just me I support all African American made and produced or actors movies and tv show. Hell we on lock down in NY it took up a good park of my long day.

Very good content! I have some co workers who call me Madame CJ Walker because of my initials and my last name is Walker. Once I found out who she was I was very honored that they felt that I have a similar character to this wonderful woman. I would love to see a factual adaptation of her life as well!

Honestly when I saw “INSPIRED by the life of madame CJ Walker” I already knew they were gonna feed us some bull. That being said it was enjoyable and I appreciate black people working. I didn’t like the pitting two women against each other like they always do. Frankly I would’ve enjoyed Madame fighting against being under estimated as a woman way more than her fighting against another woman just the way they portray the story of Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Also, if they were going to lie so much then change the characters names and just make it a fictional story we still would’ve watched and enjoyed it and it wouldn’t be in the shadow of a real person. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is based off of real characters like Joan Rivers but because they didn’t make it a biography you don’t have to live up to someone so big and offend so many people.

OMG to learn that after watching the Netflix series that folks are aware that the facts are not accurate pertaining to either Madame C.J. Walker nor Mrs. Malone. Folks need to be informed about the amazing legend from my paternal & maternal family origin of St. Louis Mrs. Annie Minerva Turnbo Malone. Who was an established business woman amongst 1 of the 1st Millionaire who became the president of Poro College Beauty School. Madame C.J. Walker received her hair care education by selling the ESTABLISHED MILLIONAIRE @ that time beauty business concept directly from selling Annie Malone hair products door to door. To falsely state that Madame C.J. Walker was the 1st Black Women entrepreneur is in correct. Entrepreneur Mrs. Annie Minerva Turnbo Malone was a MILLIONAIRE prior to Madame C.J. Walker neither of these women were the 1st. I have wanted for the last 3 years someone to tell her story first before Madame C.J. Walker but unfortunately many folks are not aware of the truth. I'm extremely grateful that you have posted some of the truth about Mrs. Annie Malone who actually opened up a center for foster care children BTW. I urge everyone to study her many accomplishments that Mrs. Malone an amazing entrepreneur of a few accomplishments. Research the Poro College that she relocated to Chicago which was part of the real estate 2 blocks that she owned. Her story will blow your mind of all of her accomplishments. Today every year St. Louis puts on an annual parade in honor of all of her accomplishments. I totally agree this Netflix was somewhat entertaining and I'm glad that black artists got an opportunity to bring to light the entrepreneur history of our folks. That are normally not told not only from American history but excluded by black men scholar who tell our stories. The fight was silly and dishonoring in the aspect that they portrayed 2 women fighting in a ring was uncalled for in my opinion. The reality of Mrs. Malone & Madame C.J. Walker fall out truth would have been much more informative than that fictitious silly boxing ring BS! The true story of both of the women is worth learning about because they both accomplished awesome monetary & philanthropic gains. I too wonder if someone will come forward from Annie Malone family roots and call out the lies or silliness. BTW I have had the PLEASURE to visit Madame C.J. Walker's beautiful, stunningly designed mansion Villa Lewaro, Walker's lavish Architectural style: Italian Renaissance estate in Irvington, New York. Talk about a gorgeous and grande home my chest stuck out as I toured each room in that classy Villa. It sits literally in the middle of this lovely town in NY called Irvington on Broadway which is the main street. It's located only 20 minute train ride from Manhattan {NYC}. As I toured that amazing mansion the main thought that came to my mind was " imagine the white folks in those days who lived in that town passing by that black architectural designed home owned by a Negro!!!!!! The Architect who designed the beautiful Lewaro was Mr. Vertner Tandy who was the Alpha Phi Alpha co-founder BTW!!!! Villa Lewaro as it was calld is a 34-room 20,000-square-foot mansion located at Fargo Lane and North Broadway in Irvington, New York, 30 miles north of New York City. Madam Walker moved into the home in May 1918 and died there on May 25, 1919. New York FYI: The town of Irvington, sometimes known as Irvington-on-Hudson, is an affluent suburban village in the town of Greenburgh in Westchester County, New York, United States. Irvington is amongst the top 10 richest towns in the state of New York what a feat!!! It is located on the eastern bank of the Hudson River, 20 miles (32 km) north of midtown Manhattan in New York City, and is served by a station stop on the Metro-North Hudson Line. The train stop on the Metro-North Hudson Line is Ardsley-on-Hudson ZIP code: 10533, 10503 The estate is now privately owned so no one can tour the home inside but it can be viewed from the main streets. I urge any folks visiting New York they should discover our beautiful area of upstate which beauty is breathe taking. They should drive through that lovely town and area stop to do some antique shopping after viewing the mansion or stop @ some of the lovely restaurants in that vicinity.

So, I guess the “Inspired by the Life of” doesn’t mean anything, huh? I don’t know that I would call these lies as much as I would call it taking creative license. Also, let’s be honest, if the movie didn’t have an antagonist, a mother-daughter conflict and some good old glitz and glamour, would you watch it? I guess I prefer to see this movie as a great message to women, especially women of color, that you can achieve your dreams if you’re willing to work for it, regardless of what nay-sayers think. Oh and one last thing, I think the issue colorist among the Black community, which still exists today, served the plot very well.

You make very good points. Hollywood definitely exaggerates for effect, that's nothing new. But I think it would have been better if they'd made up a completely new character to be her antagonist, instead of misrepresenting the character of Annie Malone (only slightly changing her name), who actually helped Walker, and gave her her start in the business. Same with her daughter. If she wasn't a lesbian, but just "gay friendly" as people keep saying, that's how she could have been portrayed. That could have created mother-daughter tension, especially in those days. Why change the character of a real person who is no longer here to dispute it? (rhetorical question-not actually asking you to answer that :-) )

There are so many black actresses but Tiffany Haddish is one of the few making millions in the box office and on film each year. Why? I've never seen her in a serious role so I'll try not to judge before seeing it but in real life, Octavia and Tiffany are only 6 years apart. Like, yall couldn't find a talented brown skinned actress to play Madam CJ's daughter? I just feel like Tiffany has been shoved down our throats for over a decade when there are so many talented black actresses out there who get no screen time. I know actresses play younger roles but in this case, Tiffany is 40 and looks about 40. Shes no Angela Bassett who can look 20+ years younger than she actually is. Angela can do no wrong in my book so maybe I'm bias.

That helps create this idea that there's only room for one black woman/male in the room. We want a plethora of famous black actors, not just 5. There is only room for a few black actresses in Hollywood while there is no limit for white actresses. That's a problem.
