It could have, but I actually really like how they reasoned that he wouldn’t. Clearly, making an inter dimensional or temporal portal takes more energy and strength then one person can have. It kills Mikey while he’s in his peak, so a 15 year old isn’t going to fair much better. However, we see that Raph and Donnie actually minimize the damage by holding onto him, as we se the cracks growing on them as well. So, we can assume that the two saved Mikey from dying by lending him their strength and it’s amazing because Mikey has his family to fall back on and they’ll always be there to help him. Which makes Mikey’s death so, so much more painful. Because the reason he died isn’t that the portal took everything he had. But because his brothers weren’t there. They couldn’t be there. Anyways sorry for rambling but I need to talk about the turtles 😔
